Two Canadian couples travelling in Taiwan for three weeks. We did many things and saw much of the country. Of all the things we did, this was perhaps my favourite. Maggie was fantastic and so informative. We learned about the country, history, agriculture, food, religion, and the list goes on. We were worried about committing a full day to such a tour but it was utterly worth it — every second. We started with a traditional Haka tea service which was delightful. From there we saw various temples, a paper umbrella maker/painter, Maggie's lovely shop (and she gave us ice cream), and took us to one of the more memorable dinners we had. At our request, just prior to dinner, we went to a market (I bought incense) and a grocery store. We'd been travelling for a few weeks and had saw much of the country so by this point we had lots of questions. As silly as it sounds, the trip to the grocery store was one of my favourite memories of the trip. Everything came together in that store.
Nato was great with all the organising and Maggie was just fantastic as a guide. I can't recommended this tour highly enough. In addition to being introduced to Haka history and culture, you'll also get a window into the emerging organic farming movement in Taiwan (something I didn't expect but was delighted to find out).

We booked this adventure on a whim to try something new while we were in Taiwan - and we are so glad we did. Nato was excellent with pre-trip communication and we were greeted and picked up on time at our accommodations - even in spite of a torrential downpour. Our driver was lovely on the approx. 1 hour journey to Meinong. In Meinong we met Maggie - our fantastic tour guide. We had the most incredible day with her discovering Hakka heritage and traditions - including tea, temples, architecture, arts/crafts, and foods. We had been in Taiwan already for a couple of weeks and had many questions - Maggie was very gracious in answering them and encouraging our curiosity. She even took us to a traditional and a new supermarket to explain various foods that we were curious about. This wonderful day ended with a delicious Hakka meal that was one of the best of our trip. All in all we would very highly recommend this experience as a wonderful way to spend a day and learn a different side of Taiwan culture. Thank you Nato & Maggie!!

We took Chill Chill' half-day field trip to Meinong, a famous Hakka village 45 mins outside Kaohsiung. Chill Chill picked us up in a taxi (they can pick you up anywhere in the city, so we went a museum in the morning and they picked us up from a nearby restaurant), and a local English- and Mandarin-speaking guide (Maggie) met us in Meinong. Even though it was raining (which restricted how much we could go around the village by foot), we still had a great time. We started the tour at a teahouse, where we made a special kind of creamy local tea (lei cha, delicious!) Next we visited the Hakka museum and a nearby traditional Hakka house. We had our own personal guide (with Maggie interpreting where necessary), Iris, who is from a local farming family. We finished the day in a small local restaurant with a great Hakka meal, beautiful, fresh food quite different flavours to other Taiwanese food we'd had. Everything was included in the tour price, so we could just relax and enjoy the day. It was just our family, so the tour could also be tailored to what we were interested in. Would do the trip again in better weather!

My husband and I met up with our 23 year old daughter to tour Taiwan, where she has been teaching English and learning Mandarin for a year.
Chill Chill Kaosuing's Market and Cooking tour caught my attention, but was unavailable for our visit. Nato, was apologetic and offered the Meinong Haka Village tour. This turned out to be exactly as he described, and better!
He greeted us at the location ouf our choosing, then handed us off to the driver, Ms Lee, and our guide for the day-Maggie. Her English was excellent!
Over the next several hours we participated in Haka lei cha tea (I won't call it a tea ceremony, as it was more fun), and from there went to several spots in the village to experience the beautiful countryside, culture, history, cuisine and crafts that are being kept alive here. Thank you Nato, Maggie and Ms Lee for sharing with us!

We are not the type that enjoys big tours, so when we started looking for things to do in Kaohsiung and read about Chill chill Kaohsiung project, we got really excited; small groups, and the best part, access to the real local and community!
We did the Taiwanese cooking class and the Meiniong Hakka village field trip. Both were exactly as advertised, well organized and sometimes more!
As to our Meinong field trip, we started our day being picked up at our hotel. Then we met our local guide Maggie. She was a wonderful girl speaking good English and was willing to share the local perspective. We had opportunities to ask questions, learn more about how they are organizing as a community. It is the opportunity to meet people and learn about their experiences, their hopes, and their work that makes this tour so rewarding. We highly recommend this experience!
