The area
Neighborhood: Xindian / Wulai District
The Bitan Scenic Area with its beautiful mountains and rivers was one of the eight sceneries of Taiwan earlier on and was reputed as the “little red cliff” due to its steep cliffs on the west bank. If you enjoy wandering through this area by bike, there are well established surrounding riverside cycling paths. One may also boat on Bitan in paddle boats which are also quite pleasant. If you are tired and would like to take some rest, why not set foot in feature restaurants on the east bank and comfort your soul with great food and beautiful scenery with an air of romance. The neighboring Wulai is one of the few districts in Northern Taiwan with indigenous culture. You can visit the Atayal Museum for the history and culture of indigenous people, or go for an in-depth indigenous tribal life experience and enjoy unique totems and architecture. The area is famous for its hot springs and cherry blossoms. Visit in spring to bask in the color of cherry blossoms, and experience hot springs in winter to warm the body and heart. Don’t miss the old street if you enjoy shopping and buying. If you want to stand closer to nature, the different appearance of Wulai Waterfall from time to time from trickling to overwhelming will capture your heart.

Wulai is 30 kms (20 miles) south of Taipei. It is up in the mountains. You can take a walk in the mountains, it is quite pleasant; the foliage is usually lush.. The main feature of Wulai is the waterfall, many people take a trip just to see it.

Wulai Falls is one of northern Taiwan's prime tourist attractions. Wulai is a township in the mountains inhabited by Atayal people. who are indigenous to the area. Wulai is 35 miles (55 km) by road from downtown Taipei. The Falls can be accessed by the Wulai Scenic Tram, and also by the Gondola. Wulai, apart from the Falls, is known for its hot springs and also the indigenous food. Wild boar is a piquant dish that many visitors are tempted to sample.

We went there around April 2019. The place is beautiful. You will pass on a local food stalls and a bridge. You can ride a trolley train or either walk going to the Wulai waterfall. The view is beautiful! The place is clean. There is also a free water refill station and chairs you can sit on.

We stayed in Ximending but took the MRT to Xindian station and tranfered to a bus to wulai. Dont worry abt the bus number, just ask the staff at the mrt control station n they r more than willing to help. The jouney took abt 30min n cost only NT7. U could pay by cash or use their mrt card.

I could strongly suggest buying their mrt store value card as it make traveling so easy n u could definitely need this card if u traveling free n easy.

When we reached Wulai, just follow the crowd. There are lots of taxi at the bus stop where we alight. The taxi drivers will ask whether u r interested to get to the waterfalls n telling all it take an hour to reach which is not true. So just ignore them unless u intend to go to the higher part of the mountain.

By foot, u could reach the Wulai waterfall in 20 min. We did the tourist thinging by taking the mini train to the waterfall and then walk back to the wulai street. The train took less than 3min to reach the waterfall n cost NT50 per adult, quite a nice experience. The train driver n ticket officers are very friendly n even help to take photos for us.

Do not expect a majestic waterfall else u will b disappointed. It is just a small waterfall n u could easily google the picture of this waterfall so I m not going to say more abt the waterfall. It is the entire experience that counts.

We spend abt 4 hours there including lunch. (Reached ard 11am n left at 3pm. ) Actually 2 hrs should b if u skip lunch n queuing for the street food.

We had lunch at one of the restaurant. Its a must try. The vegetables are seasonal n most are grown by the restaurant owner according to him. Food are neither oily or salty which is a plus for us.
Guess it doesnt matter which restaurant as most of them could display their vegetables outside their restaurant.

We hv been to Taipei afew times n hv already visited most of the tourist attractions. If this is yr 1st time n do not hv much time, then Yang Ming Shan or Shi Fen is much better.

- catch the 849 bus all the way from town, great to see the city plus you will be sure to get a seat before everyone loads on from the MRT station.
- sit on the right side window so you see the valley and views on the way up the hill.
- have the exact amount for the ticket as you don't get change.
- the museum is a great insight into the Aboriginal culture.
- catch the trolley train thingumy to the falls and walk down the road back to the village.
- yummy traditional snacks like bamboo rice and sticky rice w/ honey and peanut
- tourist information is just next to police stations and has a natural hot spring foot bath which is nice before the return trip.

Waterfall is nothing much. Not really majestic or stunning.

Great place to stay overnight. 1 night is enough in a hot spring hotel where you can have in-room hot tub or public hot pool.

Trying soaking your feet on the river water - icy cold. But do know how the dam siren sounds like. cos the dam may open/close.

Folks in that area are super-friendly, warm, and nice. So nice that I didn't mind helping them to translate whenever I saw them having problems communicating with tourists. cos I can speak English, Mandarin, local dialect, and a few Chinese dialects. They are very appreciative when you helped them. After a while, the news spread all over that there is this Singaporean dude who had helped them to translate. By Day 1 evening, everyone there knew it. Kind of a nice simple "family-like" place where everyone knows everyone.

Can get cold at night, but do take time to walk around the area at night. There is a nice bridge. A Chinese temple near it. Sometimes there are folks chatting at the table outside the temple. Can chit chat with them if you know Mandarin or local dialect.

Tips:
- Easiest way to go there is to take a MRT to Xindian station and catch a bus up the hill (around 45 minutes). Bus will stop at final stop. Take taxi only if you have a lot of luggages
- Once you alight at the final bus stop, walk to the tourist information centre to get a map. Ignore the few folks who kept harassing you to take their taxi to the various spots. The tourist information centre has staff who can help you. However, only 1 or 2 of them speak basic English. But I suppose fellow tourists will lend you a helping hand if they can bridge the language barrier.
- Check out the museum to see local cultural stuffs.
- Cute little train to sit if you want.
- A nice cafe near the waterfall. Local boss and Japanese wife. Nice place to sit down and chill out.

Walk 100 meters up Wulai Old Street, past the elementary school and follow your ears to the rapids. After an easy climb down you will soon be immersed in fresh, burbling waters crashing over well-worn boulders. Teeming with fish! You won't spend a penny for this five-star experience.

The bus ride up to Wulai is cheap and efficient. Don't take the taxi drivers stalking at the bus stop outside the Xindian MRT station, they charge per headcount and not worth the money. Anything in doubt, can ask the tourist information counter outside the MRT Station, they are very helpful.

Walking along the "lao jie" is interesting, the sausages are tasty, try the one with long queue before the bridge to take the trolley cart train to see the waterfall.

Trolley cart is interesting experience, about 1.6km from Wulai station to Waterfall station. 50/trip. No child fare :(

Waterfall is majestic, can relax along the benches with food bought from laijie and enjoy the waterfall.

Nice place to go to with beautiful scenery. To get there, just get to Xindian station and from there take a bus just outside the station. (Bus 849). Alternatively, you can take a taxi up which cost NTD 600 which is a fixed price as per the sign board just outside and near the bus stop where 849 is. Was lucky as another couple also wanted to take the cab and so we split the cost with them. Wanted to take the bus but the queue was just way too long to wait (Weekend crowd). Journey up is around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Once there, you can take the cart (with a small fee) ride up to the waterfall area. Would recommend walking back down instead to enjoy the other scenery and the fresh air.

At the top, you can choose to take the cable car (with a small fee NTD 200+ and includes coming down) further up to the waterfall area for more nice scenery and views. I didn't have a lot of time to venture further into the mountains as it was already nearing to 5pm and it was starting to get dark.

Overall, it is really a nice place to go to. Lots of good food, shopping for souvenirs and hot springs that you can choose.

Visited on a Tuesday and the temperature was actually around 14degrees. Very cold day and maybe that's why there were fewer tourists and more locals, but I'm not complaining. Had a meal at the local restuarant, mountain greens, bolied chicken in sauce (cold), stir fry wild boar meat, stir fry mushrooms, pearl spring onions and bamboo shoots. The bill came up to 1500, so it was not cheap, but I think we over ordered. The wild boar meat was tough, so 70% was left unfinished. The chicken was tasty but it's cold. The pearl spring onions was good too. We took the cart up and too shots of the waterfall. To me, it's beautiful, though not as majestic as others falls. We ventured into the hot spring and found the pool already swamped with people, so we just soaked our tired feet in the foot bath. The temperature seems hot at first but after a couple of seconds, it feels comfortable and relaxing. You will not feel cold when you remove your feet from the bath as they are all warmed up. The hot spring here is better than Beitou as it odorless, I wished I had knew this before. And best of all, it's free. Awesome, highly recommended.
