Overpriced for what you get.

Two of the many buildings that comprise the Lin family mansion are open to the public. Each has buildings grouped around a courtyard. At 250 NTD adult admission it is expensive for Taiwan. Tours are in chinese only but a smartphone video guide with english commentary and subtitles is available free, on deposit of a passport. The theater is the most interesting. The story of the way the womenfolk of the family were confined is an eye-opener.
Though it is billed as the Lin family garden, the actual garden is a little distance away in the grounds of a high school. Most of it is taken up by a large pond and pavilion, with few plantings.
Mansion and garden are a short walk from Wufeng post office bus stop. Bus #201 from the stop opposite McDonalds near the train station will take you there, for free if you tap on and off with a smart card. To combine this with a visit to the 921 Earthquake Museum, take a #50 bus from here to its terminus.

Qing dynasty mansion outside mainland China

I have read a few review on this Wufeng Lin family mansion and garden visit and always saw a complaint on no English guide tour, still, I determine to visit and I wasn't disappoint at all. I paid NTD 250 as entrance fee including English pamphlet telling the history of the mansion. If you read Wikipedia about this mansion upfront, there is no need to have other guide tour and a glass of hot red tea to drink and enjoy garden and mansion atmosphere.
A must see is the wooden stage and the great flower hall. I'm appreciated this wooden stage more than the royal stage at Beijing summer palace.
This site is not crowded, just pleasant to visit.

The largest mansion of Qing Officer of Lin Family

Lin Family Mansion is absolutely amazing while you enter the mansion. It remains lot of traditional architecture from 19 century until now. You can image how ancients lived and what meaning of building delivery. Ticket is NTD 250。 There are several parking lots.
Free tour inside is also not missed. It can help you know more about Lin Family Mansion.
Anyways I have learnt Taiwan more from there.
I am not yours” MV 的拍攝, 在大花廳舉辦音樂會,讓觀眾遊客們可親身體驗古代看戲的種種。這裡很真心真意的推薦您到訪一遊。

One of the four National Monuments in Taichung city.

1. This is the mansion and gardens of the most influential family in the political, military, economic, cultural and educational fields in Taiwan during the past two hundred years till KMT’s retreat to Taiwan in 1946.
2. The guided tour was well organized. Surprisingly, most of participants are young generation (aged 12 to 45).

Excellent except for language problem.

We visited this place in the morning and joined the guided tour. You can of course wander on your own but it was more interesting with the guide. Unfortunately the hourly tour is conducted in Mandarin. I am unsure if they have English tour on special request. The guide provided us a very good historical background about the Lin Family and explained many of the traditional features of the buildings. It was a thoroughly educational tour for us and we appreciate more of the Hakka subculture in the Qing Dynasty era. It was also an eye-opener to realise the significant efforts put into the restoration of this magnificent mansion by a descendant of the Lin family. After this visit, we went to the Earthquake Museum where the photographs of a destroyed Wufeng Lin Family Mansion were displayed.

Beautiful garden
Apr 2019 • Solo
There is another garden called Lin Family Garden in Banqiao. So, this one is called Wufeng Lin Family Garden. The entrance is the same as that of Mingtai High School. The entrance is free, but you have to register at the entrance. There is a beautiful garden with a lovely pond. Actually it is not very old, but it is a good example of a bourgeois garden at the beginning of the 20th century.

Don't go if you can't speak Chinese
Feb 2019 • Solo
I took a long bus ride to get there, paid 200 TWD admission fee, which is a lot for Taiwan, just to see a minor attraction. There were no tours in English, though the staff could speak it. All the information boards were in Chinese. The building complex is historically important, but completely unimpressive compared to the multiple wonders that Tawan has to offer. Plus, museum closes 12-13 in the middle of the day.
I recommend to spend time and money somewhere else.

Interesting

We enjoyed viewing this site although we would've benefitted from an English speaking guide. We just walked around the site and still enjoyed seeing it. The 1999 921 earthquake did extensive damage to the site, which considering its close proximity to the epicentre, its amazing anything survived. There is construction going on to re-build the site but the garden buildings seem to be intact.

Why? Simply why you have to waste time

Nothing to see and nothing to do... 15 minutes of visit, maybe for a Taiwan citizen is different.
Far from the city and nothing around...
Don't waste money and time

Not worth the effort to go if you're not Taiwanese
Apr 2017 • Couples
You can only see the house via a guided tour, which is only provided in Chinese. My boyfriend didn't understand Chinese, so I tried translating for him. But even I had trouble understanding the guide sometimes, because she often used a local dialect during the tour, and spoke too softly and too fast (I don't know why she didn't bother using the mic/headset that was provided). What's even worse - she actually excluded us. During the free tea session, she was friendly to everyone in the group and asked after them - everyone except us. Nevermind that I could clearly speak and understand Chinese. We didn't feel welcomed at all. This place is geared towards domestic tourists only, and will exclude anyone who does not understand Chinese or the local dialect.
