About
The founders of Asia University, Mr. Tsai Chang-Hai and Mr. Lin Tseng Lien, officially put his plan into action when he invited Mr. Tadao Ando on the 4th May, 2007. He wanted there to be a museum accessible on campus, thus invited Pritzer Prize Winner Mr. Tadao Ando to do the designing. Aware of the general scarcity of resources on school grounds across Taiwan, it's evident that students have a lack of contact with art and the different aspects and characteristics art brings to a certain place. Mr. Tsai wanted to use the environment to influence and inspire the students of Asia University. Thus, having a world class museum within the University grounds, would enable both students and people of Taiwan to experience the presentation of internationally renowned artists in an endorsed environment. During a press conference in early 2008, Mr. Ando presented his concept for the triangular design. His aim was to achieve a balance between the environment, architecture and people. He also attended an on-campus seminar with the teachers and students of Asia University and led them to inspect the base. On Dec. 22, 2008, the museum was selected among the "2008 Top Ten Visual Art News Topics in Taiwan". The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Jan. 24, 2011 and the museum was inaugurated on Oct. 24, 2013. In Sep. 2013, the museum was officially named Asia University's Museum of Modern Art. The main structure of Asia University's Museum of Modern Art has been constructed from bare concrete structural components, faced with curtain walls. The interior covers an area of 4,111 square meters and the surrounding grounds measure up to 19,840 square meters. Designed by the Japanese architect, Tadao Ando, the equilateral triangle has been adopted as the basic constructional element and skillfully incorporated in a repeated motif to form three stories of the triangular building. An atrium space is created with a crisscrossing arrangement of concrete beams and the outdoor terraces contain sculptures on display. While the ground floor contains an area dedicated to guests, the café, a gift shop along with a lecture hall, the first and second floors contain art galleries, with one floor being the reverse mirror image of the other. On the first floor the perimeter hallways are wide enough to be used for the display of artworks on moveable walls, while on the top floor much narrower hallways circumvent a set of inner galleries. Hence, the galleries on the lower floor have a lot of daylight from one side, the upper floor galleries have to depend on electric light for illumination.

One of the top notch modern art museums in Taiwan.
May 2019
One of the top notch modern art museums in Taiwan.
Its building was designed by Ando Tadao, a laureate of Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995. It exhibited the first rated and internationally renowned modern art works.

Interesting architecture
Apr 2019 • Solo
It is a museum of modern arts, which belongs to Asia University. From downtown Taichung, it is a little bit far, but there is a service of public bus. Actually I cannot understand modern arts, and moreover the entrance (NT$250) is a little bit expensive. The architecture of famous architect Tadao Ando is however interesting.

Tadao Ando + Zao Wouki = Perfect Art
Jan 2018 • Solo
The building is based on a perfect triangle. Even the lawn is a triangle shape. The architect wanted us to walk around this triangle lawn to relax our feelings before entering the building. Not only does it make aesthetic sense, it makes psychological sense too.

The building is of concrete with plenty of sunshine throughout the spaces. Zao Wouki paintings are abstract with big colors, perfect contrast/compliments to this architecture.

What a wonderful surprise to find such a gem in a sleepy Taichung.

Quite far from Taichung city, not much to see as expected. But feel leisure to spend few hours there.

Amazing piece of art by Tadao Ando. Fairfaced concrete finish throughout the building creating amazing space pockets among trusses. Masterpiece, must see.

Beautful museum with renarkable collections
Oct 2016 • Solo
This museum is interesting in several ways:
- it contains an amazing collection of bronze sculptures by Rodin and Degas, probably the largest outside France,
- it offers rotating exhibitions (two per year) on original themes, featuring art work by artists from apTaiwan, China, Japan...
- the building is an attraction by itself, designed by famed Japanese architect,
- the campus of Asia University boasts some impressive buildings.
It is really worth a visit.

Nice side trip

The museum is about 30 min drive from Taichung City on the campus of Asia University. The architecture of the museum and so much the content is what attracted us to visit. We were not disappointed as every corner is a photo opportunity with lights and shadow adding contextual beauty to this place. IT is a modern Japanese minimalist decorated with many clever local designs fixtures. The gift shop was interesting with many nice locally designed souvenirs

Gorgeous space
Apr 2016 • Family
The museum is located in a lovely area outside of Taichung with mountain views. The building itself looks to have been designed to capture maximum sunlight. The galleries themselves contain an incredible collection, thoughtfully put together. The staff are helpful and the gift shop has gorgeous products. Even the coffee was good. One could easily spend half a day here and wish to return.

There is no entrance fee. The place is very neat and the staff is always willing to help.
There is a small grassy park outside for the kids to play.
