Neighborhood: West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth. The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

182 art space is my favorite place in Tainan. It's not only a gallery but also a bar, which combined with two buildings. The front building of 1F and whole 2 and 3F are spaces for exhibition, which they change for every 6 week. In the back of the 1F, a bar decorated with bright paintings on the wall, painted by local artist. Also, there is a yard at the end of 1F...if you like to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere, the yard will be the best place for you to stay. 182 makes art more friendly and closer...not as indifferent as usual...it's kinda part of the life. If you ever come to Tainan, you must not miss this place which offers space to see arts and have drinks with friends.

Great art space in an old shophouse. Focus on Taiwanese artists, established and emerging. Small bar on the ground floor with great range of beer on tap.

Opened in November 2013, 182 is an independently run Art Space in Tainan City. In the historical setting of “Rice Road”, a place famed for it's numerous stories of ghost encounters, the 50 year old building has been lovingly converted into a bright, light and welcoming space for artists to show and discuss their work. This creative use of old space is what sets traditional cities like Tainan apart from modern Taipei, making the galleries here really something worth seeing.

182 was opened with the intention of giving young artists and curators a way to inexpensively show their work to the public. The shows usually run for 6 weeks and since opening have played host to a wide range of artistic genres including photography, installations, illustration and painting.

Artists, art enthusiasts and members of the public are welcomed daily from 2pm til 12am to discuss, express and relax in the gallery's friendly atmosphere. And if your thirst for art leaves you with a thirst for drink, the cafe offers a wide range coffees and alcoholic beverages.

Tainan is a beautiful city itself and galleries such as 182 Art Space make it even more special. It's a two floor building with a bar at the back and a cool backyard, with graffiti on the way. The exhibitions are nice, with talented artists and the staff is extremely friendly - they can even connect you with other art spaces. Not to mention it's close to cultural and historical places in town, like the Chihkan Tower, temples and good restaurants with local food (even 50 Lan bubble tea!). Its definitely worth a visit.
