The area
Neighborhood: West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth.
The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

- luxuryvoyageSwitzerland4,015 contributionsVery short but picturesque roadThe street is much shorter than the many photos would have you believe. But if you are in Tainan, this picturesque street is worth a visit, it also has a cat cafe. We visited the street during the day. Next time I would visit in the evening as it is busier and the street looks even more beautiful with the lights and lamps.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 9, 2024
- LeonhknyHong Kong, China22,454 contributionsInteresting alleyShennong Street is actually a narrow alley at the heart of Tainan. Part of it inside a wet market, the street is part of a revamped area that was the city's prime retail space. A stroll along the distinctive passageway is fun. Unfortunately not much information is available on site and many of the shops are closed.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 12, 2024

It’s a very photogenic place. If all you want is photos, then the best time to visit is at night when the lanterns are lit up against the night, otherwise it’s mainly souvenir shops on the street. For food, it’s best to go to the streets surrounding Shennong.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 29, 2024

Shennong Street was originally called Beishi Street. It was named because the street was located on the north side of Nanshi Port among the five commercial port roads (collectively referred to as Wutiao Port) in Taiwan's capital during the Qing Dynasty. Today, it is named after the Yaowang Temple at the bottom of the street where the Shennong family is enshrined. , renamed Shennong Street. As early as the Qing Dynasty, Shennong Street was already the busiest main street in Wutiao Port District, and many houses still retain their appearance from the Qing Dynasty and the early Japanese colonial period.

This is a nice area in Tainan. This area is not very big but lots of cute shops, cafes, restaurants. Its has a artsy feel through out the place. Best to come day time as night most shops are close. But during the evening the lanterns are on which give the place a real cosy feel. In the corner there is this really nice Japanese BBQ restaurant highly recommended.

I heard that Japanese people used to live here too. I was walking along the street, feeling a bit nostalgic, as it reminded me of the backstreets of Tsukishima or Tsukiji, when suddenly I came across some gorgeous Chinese-style decorations. It was a short walk, but I was able to spend a lot of time enjoying it.

I visited after 9pm. The street was lit up with lanterns and had a fantastic atmosphere. There were many shops selling miscellaneous goods, and no one was pushing you to buy anything, so you could just casually browse. If you're going to visit, the best time to do so is at night.

A narrow picturesque old street in downtown Tainan, ends with a beautiful Taoist temple. Lots of small shops, I recommend visiting the cat cafe.

There are some absolutely beautiful night walks to take in Taiwan's oldest City, Tainan. 臺南市(Tainan). There are several old, cobblestone streets, which serve as a reminder to this city's important place in Taiwan's history.
One of these ancient streets is Shennong Street (神農街).
Seeing Shennong street was almost exactly as I imagined it. Walking down the street, quiet, and dark, is like walking through a silent film. Candles and lights flicker. I swear someone must be watching us but I am not troubled - just reminded that people dwell here and that they deserve respect. We wander in awe for a few minutes, take a few photos, and then depart, leaving this old street and its residents to their peaceful night.
Recommendation: Come here at night, and be quiet and respectful.
