The area
Neighborhood: West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth.
The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

Street flanked by traditional buildings, some commercial and some residential all mixed together. However like a few places in Tainan, we either came to early in the day (mind you, it’s early afternoon) or they only opens during weekends. Lucky for us, we found an interesting souvenir shop which is opened.

This is a nice area in Tainan. This area is not very big but lots of cute shops, cafes, restaurants. Its has a artsy feel through out the place. Best to come day time as night most shops are close. But during the evening the lanterns are on which give the place a real cosy feel. In the corner there is this really nice Japanese BBQ restaurant highly recommended.

There are some absolutely beautiful night walks to take in Taiwan's oldest City, Tainan. 臺南市(Tainan). There are several old, cobblestone streets, which serve as a reminder to this city's important place in Taiwan's history.
One of these ancient streets is Shennong Street (神農街).
Seeing Shennong street was almost exactly as I imagined it. Walking down the street, quiet, and dark, is like walking through a silent film. Candles and lights flicker. I swear someone must be watching us but I am not troubled - just reminded that people dwell here and that they deserve respect. We wander in awe for a few minutes, take a few photos, and then depart, leaving this old street and its residents to their peaceful night.
Recommendation: Come here at night, and be quiet and respectful.

I walked for about 3 hours one day and made sure I included this lane. Seeing the lanes was one of the most memorable sights in Tainan I remember. it gave me a different perspective and really made the city interesting for me. Some cafes so it's a nice place to stop and have a rest.

This street is not very long and with all old city style. If you don't have time to visit there twice, go there at night. Very good for photo shooting. There are some interesting stores selling cute souvenir like any other sightseeing spots. There are also some cafe with style , so pick one and stay for a while to enjoy old street would be my recommendation.

I visited this street at night according to the advise from trip advisor. It was a disapoitment. There are not much and nothing special about this street excepting the old houses.
This street has a lot of restaurant and drinking bar. Should it be still considered as old street?!

Maybe this street is hopping at night but during the day it was simply a boring little lane of closed doors and scooter traffic. The nearby Water Fairy Temple Market was simply a nice market but not worth an extra effort, and the Medicine Lord Temple at the end of Shennong St was equally ordinary, although it had a decent washroom upstairs.
If you're new to Asia these spots may thrill, but anyone with a little experience may wish they'd invested their exploration time elsewhere.
