My favorite time to go is near sunset when the city is bathed in golden light. The quiet mountain air allows you to temporarily forget of the hustle and noise of the city. Enjoy a pot of hot tea in one of the many cliff-side tea houses with good friends for hours till the city lights are as bright as jewels. Sometimes I'd ride the gondola back to the city in darkness. Other times, I choose to come down in the small van-bus that follows the narrow winding mountain road. It is a different kind of thrill!

There are different ways to get to Maokong Mountain, one is by car, the other is by Maokong Gondola. The last station on top of the mountain is called Maokong Station, which is the end of the line. There are a few vendors and restaurants on the hill, which makes it a nice stop to look around before heading back down the gondola.

I was exhausted by the overtourism in Jiufen, so I came here to enjoy a cup of tea. My husband and children are scared of heights, so we took the bus.
Most Japanese people get off at the end of the ropeway, Maokong Station, and the bus driver said, "We've arrived at Maokong Station!" But we explained, "We want to go to Yaoyue Tea House near Maokong Station!" and arrived safely.
We checked out a few tea houses that looked good, but we were able to enter the one we wanted without waiting.
We then ordered the shop's recommended "Wenshan Baozhong Tea" and a meal. "Delicious! The orchids are blooming in my mouth!" I said, almost turning into gourmet reporter Hikomaro. The aroma was simply amazing. My children loved it and asked for more.
You make your own tea, so you can spend your time lazing around munching on Tieguanyin tea xiaolongbao (steamed tea buns). It's also open 24 hours a day.
I enjoyed the transition from dusk to night and the sounds of insects and frogs, and before I knew it, two and a half hours had passed. The atmosphere was so relaxed.
It takes about an hour by bus to get to downtown Taipei, so I recommend taking it easy and not packing your schedule too much.

An excursion to do moving from the city center on a sunny day with clear skies to enjoy the view. To reach the top you use the funicular called Gondola which makes three stops, the first at the Zoo, the second where there are a series of temples to visit and the last at the terminus where there are several tea houses, some tea plantations and numerous trekking routes. The view is very beautiful, if it's clear you can even see Taipei101. Very relaxing excursion.

Maokong is the centre of Taipei's tea culture. You can enjoy the locally grown tea and light meals. From the top of the mountain, you can get some great views from the lookout. The tea gardens are also great for hiking. To get to Maokong. you can drive or take the gondola from the Taipei Zoo MRT stop. The gondola trip is very pleasant, you get a great view as you ascend the mountain.

A cool place, literally. The place is in the outskirts of Taipei and has village communities and a temple nearby. It also has several cafes where they serve tea and coffee. Their tea seems to be better than the coffee they serve

We took the gondola up to the mountain and hiked back down to the Zoo MRT station. There are lovely plantations at the mountain and nice views. Food is available up on the mountain too (convencience store, teahouses, small restaurants and street vendors).

Amazing hiking place just some 20-25 away from the City Center.
You can recharge yourself and then come back to Taipei to keep enjoying the nighlife.
Tip: there are many tea houses and restaurants that cook with tea. Try them.

A long trip to make for a cup of overpriced tea, although the city views are great. Went in January and there were no waiting lines. A bit difficult to orient yourself once you get off the gondola. There is a bus, but it is not clearly marked.

Highly recommended. It's a short MRT ride, easily accessible from the city, get nice view on the (probably world's cheapest) gondola ride as well as from the mountain top, good walking trail and good food. If you visit during the flowers season eg Mar for cherry blossom, you get a bonus!
Some tips:
- avoid weekend and holidays, also note the gondolas don't operate on Monday, it's the day for maintenance
- their official website provides good info, also shows any adhoc disruption of service eg due to bad weather condition.
- check weather forecast, it is cooler on the mountain
- take MRT to Taipei Zoo, follow the signage, walk 350m to the gondola station;
- consider buying the NT120 gondola package (part of current promotion), it allows 2 round trip ride + 1 stop, saves a bit of money on the already-very-cheap tickets
- you can try out the glass bottom gondola, it's a separate queue, it should not be long if it's a weekday
- you can consider taking the gondola to the last station, Maokong
- get map and direction from the Visitor's office located nearby for the following 2 items:
-- Ayishi Teapot Restaurant (for lunch/dinner/tea, this is a popular restaurant), marked as Y22 on the map, check for discount for customers with the gondola package (we forgot abt it when we were there). Signature dishes includes jasmine green tea fried rice, smoke chicken drumsticks, chicken soup, steam bun. Go to the one on street level, which is the original restaurant, not the one on the 2nd storey in the same building
-- Camphor Tree Trail, it's a easy boardwalk trail, very pleasant and relaxing. We visited during the lupin season, beautiful
- on your way down the mountain, can consider stopping at Zhinan Temple station, check out the 3 temples on the mountain, at least 2 of them are magnificient, enjoy the view from the mountain too
- you can get a refund of NT20 for the package at the customer service centre.

Taipei Zoo and the Maokong Gondola are worth doing and great value. I would recommend the glass bottomed Gondola to give more impressive views below your feet of the tree tops and terrain. Wait time for the glass bottomed gondola was only slightly longer that the standard ones. Was about a 30 minute train ride back in to Taipei City.
Taipei 101 is also very impressive, Night view was amazing but needs to be clear. Also a shopping area with in the tower and a new strip only a few minutes walk from the base.

Can we put a folding wheelchair inside the gondola?
Written October 14, 2017
Its certainly roomy enough for that, i guess just depends on how many people are riding the same time as you? and what they are carrying with them.
Written November 14, 2017
It depends if the weather. If it's a bad one, no.

Hi, may I know if you have private hot spring room for family of 3 adults and 2 children (7 and 11 years old)?
Written September 17, 2015

このホテルから歩いていけるおすすめのドイツ料理レストランを教えてください。
Written December 28, 2014

On looking further, this question seems to be posted on the wrong area. The heading should be 'Maokong Gondola'. where all the answers can be found. Seems a waste of resources!

Hi, if I buy a ticket from taipei zoo station to mao kong station, can I also alight at the other stations? Also, if I am going in December which is winter season, what are the types of activities available?

IMO the Easy Card is the best way covering both subway and the gondola cable car. The Gondola costs about 50 NTD as I recall, and it's nearly impossible to spend 200 NTD bumming around the subway in just one day... it is very economical. So it beats a one day pass. Also you don't take subway from zoo to Maekong Gondola.. (you get off the subway at the zoo station... take escalator down a floor, and when you exit stay on your side of the street and walk to the left about 5 mins.. and there is the entrance to the Maekong Gondola - CLOSED MONDAYS!!) You can get the Easy Card at metro station... there is a large machine where you pay 100 NTD for the card, and then you "top up" the card with whatever amount you like (300 NTD will do you well). When you no longer need the card as you leave Taipei, you go to the metro attendant booth and they will refund you what you did not spend, plus about 80 NTD back from your 100 NTD deposit as well. The Cards don't have expiry dates. 7-11 is one of the very few places where you can buy "asparagus juice" and not all of them carry it. It's an acquired taste a local introduced me to - sounds weird, but it's actually quite good. Have a great trip!
