Waiao Beach, also known as Touchang Beach, is one of the few swimmable beaches on the east coast of Taiwan. It is near Yilan, and it can get very crowded on the weekend, especially in summer. Waiao Beach has good waves, it is popular with sufers.

I have lived two years in front of that beach. It was paradise like. The beach is large, clean and beautiful. I agree that it's not always 100% clean, but which beach on earth is always 100% clean? - The answer is simple: none! There are several cleaners who live in front (they were my neighbors) and some of us picked up whatever we found from time to time. I think it's easy to criticize. If some of you think it's not clean enough, you can clean it up. After all, it's not an extraterrestrial beach, it's a beach on our planet. Even if you don't live in Taiwan, we live on earth and this earth is our mother. Why don't we care about it?

The water of the Pacific Ocean is clean and it's a sheer delight to swim here. Be careful though, the current is pretty strong. Don't go too far unless you are a good swimmer. Taiwanese people are generally not good at swimming. That's why the lifeguards are annoying. If you try to swim right in front of them, they might not let you swim. You need to swim on a side of the beach where they won't see you or swim before they start working. I think they start at 10:00 am and finish at 18:00. You can either swim before that or after, but be careful.

You'd probably never find a beach quite like this along the East Coast of Taiwan. Waiao Beach boasts vast sandy beach, depression-erasing scenery and quiet afternoon teatime at cafes. What's more, it is the beach where maritime sport enthusiasts gather- parasailing, boogie boarding, surfing...There's just one thing that stains this perfect picture - cigarette butts. If you're someone who screams upon seeing the sea and charges for it, you probably won't notice what's under your feet or in the sand. Yes, you're not mistaken. Cigarette butts are just everywhere. They are buried in the sand, left between twigs, sandwiched between food leftovers. Mother Nature proffers us a paradise on earth and I just couldn't figure why would someone have smoked and left residue here while enjoying the view?

I'm not sure why so many people have good things to say about this beach. First of all, most of it is closed off to swimming and surfing. The part that is open is filled to the brim with people sitting on surf boards even though there were literally no waves at all! As we walked down the path to the beach we were offered board rentals a dozen times, when we replied that there was no surf they said "yeah but it's fun just to sit on the board". Laughable! I think surf culture has recently arrived here, but they're not sure how it works exactly.
The beach itself had so much rubbish, that was a major turn off for us.
The black sand and view of Turtle island make this especially frustrating because it could be gorgeous! So much potential! But with extreme heat, no chair rentals, no umbrella rentals, nowhere to buy a towel (even though there are a dozen slap dash wannabe surf shops), and lots of garbage floating around, this place is instead one of the most disappointing beaches I've visited in Asia after reading all the hype about it.

Waiao is a great day excursion from Taipei city. I took a train from Taipei main station and the journey is about 1.5 hours. You don't need to buy tickets in advance.
Upon arrival at Waiao train station, just cross the road and you will see the amazing beach with roaring waves. There are benches that you can sit and enjoy your packed meal whilst enjoying the ocean view.
To get to the tourist information center, standing facing the ocean, turn right and walk along the beach path. If you are wanting to get a drink, you'll be able to get it there. There are also coin operated showers if you wish to clean up.
The beach is clean and the water is clear. However, when I was there, it was red flag and can't swim in it.
There isn't much else to do around here except the beach and surfing. So if you are not planning to surf, a day excursion from Taipei would suffice. I would perhaps head on to Jiufen for the evening.

It’s a very huge expanse of black sand and a longish walk to the sea. The waves were quite high and there were a few surfers even on a wet winter day.
You can use the open shower for 20NT so keep some coins handy.

Just spent the day at the beach relaxing and drinking papaya milk. Nothing spectacular, but if you feel like chilling on the beach its a good place to go.

There are a few places where you can get food. You can also ask the local fruit stand lady to add some vodka to your juice (if you're looking for some cheap cocktails).

We had a fun day out!

A relaxed stroll along this compact black sand beach is rejuvenating. The serenity of the clear skies married with the soothing splashes of the waves makes this beach worth a visit. 30 minutes is enough to appreciate this site.

As we stayed at Sea Luv homestay, Waiao beach is right in front of our minsu. The sand is very fine for walking. If the weather is fine, we could view sunrise just behind Turtle Island. There is a cycling track beside the beach which leads to Wushi harbour and Lanyang Museum. Lovely beach to relax and may see surfers if weather is fine.
