Spectacular road and a lifeline for local Bunun villages
Aug 2018 • Solo
This highway hugs a spectacular river gorge and helps connect Bunun villages in the mountains. It is not as steep or as high as parts of Taroko Gorge/Central Cross Island highway further to the north, but it is an amazing road nonetheless with many similar features - tunnels cut through the mountains, hairpin turns on cliff roads, and bridges over the spectacular river gorge below. Because it is a winding mountain road with open drainage ditches on one side and a cliff on the other, drive with extreme caution - use the large mirrors and headlights when rounding curves, and do not drive this road after dark.

The highway was closed further up the gorge for repairs when we there, but I got a chance to go on a morning hike through some of the more scenic areas before the reconstruction activity (there was very little traffic and the local guide said it was OK).

As this is a working road for small communities and construction teams, there aren't many spots for tourists to park and enjoy the scenery. There are numerous hotsprings along the highway, including "6 mouths hot spring" (六口溫泉) that the public can use. On the far side of the gorge, you can see hot springs streaming from the cliff.

Formosan Mountains
I've taken this route many times and you can expect great views with a chance to see some aboriginal culture and wildlife (yellow-throated martens, flying squirrels, eagles and Taiwanese endemic birds). There are also several hiking trails leading off to peaks and hot springs though some of these are tough going.
If you are driving yourself, beware of the very winding roads and particularly later in the day thick mist and cloud ( the pass at the top is over 3000m), and you should also look out for some of the mental Taiwanese driving!
The drive can take a long time and the road can be closed by typhoons, but if you do it you'll enjoy driving through great mountain forests with stunning vistas. Stop and camp half way up and enjoy the owls and flying squirrels and an open road in the morning.
