About
In 1858, following the Second Opium War, Taiwan was forced to open its ports for trade under the Beijing and the Tienjin Treaties. Four years later, a customs office was established in Tamsui following the opening of Tamsui Port. Initially, there were only a few foreign customs officers, most of whom lived in the customs office building or rental houses nearby. Tamsui Customs administration then purchased a piece of land in 1866 and subsequently started building official staff residences in 1869. The building has a square layout and a splendid view of the Tamsui River and Mt. Guanyin. The foundation of the building is elevated 3 feet high, which allows humidity to be carried away through the square shaped ventilation holes by the flowing breeze. The structure is a classic colonial-style building known as a "bungalow." It was nicknamed "Xiao Bai Gong," meaning "Little White House" due to its ash-white appearance. It features ash-white outer walls, a terrace with a magnificent view, a veranda with arched columns, and a vintage fireplace.

House and garden a picturesque tableau

The Tamshui Customs Officer's Residence is an attractive building. It has a view out over the Damshui River, to where it meets the Pacific Ocean. The Residence adjoins Fort Santo Domingo and Althiea University, which provide good photo opportunities.. The Residence remained in British hands until 1980, when it was returned to the Republic of China government.

Photogenic
Jan 2020
I suppose most folks come here not because of whatever historical significance this building has, but rather because this provides a nice backdrop to that Instagram photo. And it is quite pretty particularly on a sunny day. Whether you can actually get off a good photo without having one of the many other like-minded visitors in the picture is another matter, and probably requires a fair amount of patience. Pretty close to other sights such as Fort San Domingo so worth a look.

Little White House
Jul 2019 • Solo
This beautiful building, standing on a hill, is called Little White House. It used to a residence of custom officer. It is open to public, but on the day I went there was unfortunately closed. (It is closed only once a month, and it was that day.) However, even from outside you can take a nice picture of this elegant residence.

Easy walking distance to Aleuthia University/Oxford College and the British Ambassador and Japanese Ambassadors Home. There might be entry fees, but free on weekends. Just a garden and house. Easy to go in and out. Good luck and enjoy!

An Interesting Historic Building In A Nice Area
Feb 2017 • Couples
The White House sits on top of the hill overlooking the river in the Fort Santo Domingo precinct which is a classy area of Tamsui. The Customs Officers obviously lived well back then and this house has been well maintained.

Great view of the Tamsui River, interesting history lesson!
Feb 2015 • Solo
Tamsui Customs Officer Residence is in Fort Santo Domingo's neighborhoor, very close to Tamsui River. Since it is uphill, the view of the river is great!

Also you will find there very nice gardens and a good explanation about the architecture of the place (that is very simple, actually, but follows the buildings of its time) and shows some other exemplars in South Asia.

If visiting the Fort, you should not miss it!
