This street food night market straggles for several blocks along Zhongxiao Road, which is not closed to traffic. As the stalls front on to the road you are forced to walk uncomfortably close to the traffic. There is a good selection of different foods available and prices are cheap. English is notable by its absence. A few stallholders will try to help in broken english, otherwise a knowledge of chinese is very useful.

Zhongxiao Night Market in Taichung is a small night market located at Taichung Road, about 15min walk from Taichung TRA station. The night market only sells "buy and go" street foods ( not like those night markets in Taipei which also have stalls that sell accessories, clothes etc). Only the bigger stalls had tables for customers to sit n eat.
A good place if you want to experience a night markets and local foods. Foods are mostly local like the "crispy chicken", Fries, braised food (tofu, pork, duck blood etc). The taste of the braised food are different to those in Taipei.
But beware of the traffic when you are going round, as there are a lot of electric scooters and cars moving around the streets and many parked around the stalls.

The Zhongxiao night market is a much smaller scale as compared to its counterparts. It is generally only a one-street where shops and makeshift stalls are selling various local food and cuisines (unlike Shili or Fengjia where several streets and smaller lanes made up the ernomous night market). Only a handful are selling household or lifestyle products here.
We came by here on the first night in Taichung. From our hotel (at Heping Street), it took us about 12 mins to walk here which was fine. (along our way, we passed by the 3rd wet market, several retail and convenice stores, bakeries etc)
Among the food stalls, many are selling similar food items and generally they are highly competitive (a normal scene of the night markets). Not only competiting in terms of food quality, tastiness but also in prices as the locals will know which stall to go where queues are formed up while others have no customers.
So we asked some locals around and they recommended us a few stalls, such as the deep fried chicken cutlet (a must have in Taiwan), soy sauce pork rice, fried rice with prawns, meat balls with rice vermicelli, besides the fruit-ice blended juices which we tried. Overall, the food here are tasty and prices are slightly cheaper than other night markets. No complaints and we felt it was worth the visit.
This night market is not as crowded as the others, we came past 7pm and stayed till 8.45pm and could easily move around without the need to push our ways through the crowded something we have to do in other night markets. The only concern is that to look out for passing cars, scooters or bicycles as the stalls are located along the road (unlike other night markets where roads are blocked from vehical traffic) but generally drivers here are cautious. The street was not as well lighted too.
If you are expecting this night market to be on par like other bigger ones, you will be disappointed as within 30minutes, you would have walked through the entire street. However, the scene, food and culture life do offer a different perspective (as each night market has it own's attractiveness and uniqueness), so there is no harm to dropby here to experience that. (there are also wet market which is still in operation though past 7pm selling local vegetables, fruits clothings, with beauty and manicure etc, supermarket besides those retail and convenience stores, cafes and bakeries mentioned earlier along the main road (Taichung Road) which will lead you here.

This is a relatively small and simplistic night market. Feels more local rather than one catered for tourist.

Zhongxiao Night Market is one of the few night markets I've visited in Taiwan where the road is not closed off to traffic. One must be watchful of the vehicles (although they tend to go really slow on this street) while looking at the decent variety of food available. From Taiwanese traditional food to Turkish Kebabs, to Vietnamese bahn mi and Japanese sushi, there's something for everyone.
Would highly recommend a bowl of beef noodles from one of the stores, which is a family-run business. It's near the junction and can be seen in the photos below. Really enjoyed it at an affordable (80 NTD) price! Would also say this place offers something different compared to the touristy Feng Chia Night Market - a quick 1 hour should do it, without any pushing or rubbing arms with other sweaty patrons.

If you came to taichung for more than shopping and eating, and you are staying near taichung train station, zhongxiao is a much more convenient night market than the more famous fengjia. About 20 minutes walk from the train station, it spans just a few blocks but has enough seafood, chicken, beef etc dishes and snacks to choose from.

It's a rather small night market, with nothing much to offer except for food. And the thing about night markets is that the food are repetitive, meaning you get a lot of the same kind of food. Eg ice-cream peanut wraps, smelly tofu, braised duck, beef noodles etc. If you're sick of such fare, don't bother coming.

This night market was about 10mins walk away from our hotel, and we decided to try it out for dinner. After experiencing 逢甲夜市, you will definitely feel that this market is smaller and has a limited selected of foods available.
Nevertheless it is delicious, I especially love the roasted corn!
One thing to note that as it is catered for locals, you will see many Taiwanese scooting away once their food is prepared so one has to be aware of the traffic!

This night market is alongside a busy street, which makes it a little harrowing, but the traffic is rather slow and mostly scooter based. It extends over several blocks and offers a wide selection of food. Don't go if you're looking for non-food products like clothing or electronics.
