I'd went to the trail to the top of the liyu mt. once. The wheather isn't well that day, the environment is humid and muggy, some road are made with dirt and rocks, whitch made it difficult to maintain my balance, even I walked carefully, I still almost fell down.

We visited Liyu Lake after lunch during our visit to Hualien, and booked a motorboat to take the 5 of us around the lake for about half an hour. The lake itself is lovely - relatively quiet surroundings, with ample opportunities to observe the local flora and fauna against the mountain backdrop. The locals are friendly, and you can also book kayaks or paddleboats to go around the lake, or rent bicycles to visit the nearby area. There is also a quirky little display of inflatable ducks on one part of the lake.

The lake was named after it was shaped like a fish. However over time with the concrete floors and made a tourist attraction. It's becoming the shape of a circle.
Loved the serenity and the friendly people there. A place to relax on a lazy afternoon. Enjoy the sights - mountains in the clouds.
From the city centre to Liyu lake you can take a bus but the journey takes around an 1 hour not including waiting time. There are 2 buses operated by Hualien Bus Co. which goes to the lake for NT 42 - 52 depending on your location. The bus frequents every 2 hours. Alternatively you can take the taxi, cost around NT 350 - 380. But it was a flag-down by our hostel lady-owner.
You can ride a bicycle, paddle a boat or kayak in the lake.
In April there is a cool breeze as you stroll along the area.
The paddle boat costs NT 400-600 for an unlimited period. The bicycle costs NT 100 - 150 for unlimited periods too.
Have fresh seafood lunches or fried prawn cakes from the stores along the main road. Delicious!
The sunset sets early at 1800h so everything starts to close from 1600 onwards. They officially close at 1900h.

While the view of mountains in the background was pretty, I didn't find this place worth visiting. Apart from the mountains, the overall landscaping was boring, there were no attempts to create a nice botanic gardens or parks with interesting floral/fauna.
I was there in late October and it was quite a hot and humid morning, the paddle boats looked uninviting. Worse, I got bitten by sandflies and didn't know it until the bites started showing up in the next day or two. Two weeks later, I was still getting 'fresh' sandfly bites which I suspect are due to the female sandflies having laid eggs under the skin.
The private tour guide we hired didn't issue any warning.

I was hesitant about going to Liyu Lake initially, it was an impromtu decision that led me to here!
It doesn't look like much from the outside, but you have to go up to the pavillion to get the full view of the lake!
I sat in a boat as well, which you just have to paddle to get it moving, very dummy-proof; I just sat in and let the boat bring me around.
There is much inconvenience in getting out of there though, better to note the timings of the buses(客運), otherwise you would end up like me, waited for 1 hour + just to leave the place.

We were here on Tues, 17th Dec. The place was as one would expect from a Taiwanese tourist destination with eating places along a stretch on the lakeside (with local live shrimp specialty...so-so from our experience & more for the novelty) and foot-paddle boats for hire (nice & relaxing). The place was not crowded on the Tuesday in fact there were more waiting boats and maybe more eating shops than people during our visit. After the boating & lunch we decided to enjoy the scenic vista from the benches on the lakeside while waiting for the bus (Hualien - Shoufen) to return to Hualien. And that was when the sand flies hit us but we would realise only after considerable exposure as most sand flies exposure tend to be. The consequences only become clear a day or two afterward. Many of the locals wore long sleeve shirts & fully covered legs. Some tourists might opt for insect repellent. So if you are prepared the place can be a place to include in your Hualien program.

This place is a surprise to me. When I got off the train station in hualien, I was approached by a taxi driver who was willing to take me and my family to sightseeing for 3000NTD. He looked really honest and I agreed, since I didn't have anything in mind.
He took me to Liyu lake and it is a really beautiful lake. I did some lake paddling there and had lunch at the restaurant right across the boat hiring berth. Everyone over there is so friendly and the scenary is so pretty. Awesome place that I will reccomend to anyone visiting hualien.
Unfortunately, because I took a cab there, I do not know if any buses goes there. Hope another reviewer can fill in this part.

Liyu lake, compared to Sun Moon Lake, it way smaller but it has less commercial activities hindering the views.
It is a good place to take a relaxing stroll and take in the views.
Paddle boats are available for rental for those interested.

What more can you ask for when the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you look at in the evening is this breathtakingly beautiful lake? Liyu (Carp) Lake is a rare gem in Shoufeng Township. You can walk around it. It's about 5 kilometers. There's a bike trail. And boats for hire. If you need a great place to mediate or just simply gaze in awe at what God has gifted us with, then come to the lake. You won't regret it.

The lake and surrounding mountains are a pleasant stop, but the paddleboat was disappointing. The boat we were given was uncomfortable and it wasn't possible to stretch your legs while paddling. One person with us was so tall he couldn't even help paddle! If you hire a peddle boat make sure you can fit into it first! The water show was quite cool.

Why are people not allowed to swim in the lake?
_X1791TR

according to some local Taiwanese it is because the water is murky and there are undercurrents which have caused people to drown in the past.
So in the interest of public safety swimming is not allowed.
Having said that: Most locals are probably not used to swimming in lakes, rivers or the ocean.
It is also unclear how this is rule enforced.
