A hidden treasure around Yan Ming Shan National Park
Mar 2018 • Friends
On a gorgeous spring day, my mom, a childhood friend of mine, and I wanted to enjoy nature, gourmet cuisine and scenic view without strenuous activity. Therefore, we decided to have lunch at the Pine Garden, a no-menu restaurant. We indulged ourselves in the well-maintained garden and get plenty of fresh air before and after the meal. Surprisingly, we could see Taipei 101 clearly from one of the gazebos and the restrooms were very clean. The Japanese pound was full of fish, flowers were blooming, and the sound of the waterfall was very soothing. The chef prepared 8 exquisite dishes including 5 pickled veggie appetizers, a great variety of sashimi, steamed lobster, Japanese sweet fish stuffed with minced pork and Taiwanese pickles (very original), braised beef on a smoked iron pot, beautifully arranged vegetable soup, sticky rice ball dessert, and so on. The food was not greasy and with very balanced taste. I also loved the black bean was served before the meal and the Pu-erh tea to conclude it very much. To enjoy the nature and delicious food at the same time is such a delightful experience! Hopefully, I can visit Pine Garden next time I am in Taiwan!

A peaceful delight

A few miles away from the center of Taipei, we found this authentic Taiwanese restaurant, nested in the middle of the Yang-Ming Chan National Park. The chef proposes an 8 course menu which combines tradition with innovation. It starts with the ‘five flavors of life’ appetizers (sour, sweet, bitter, spicy and salty). The most astonishing dish is the crab which is steamed on your own table with a taste of oolong tea - the hour glass reminds you when ready. The short ribs are smoked in front of you suspended by herbs over a charcoal pot.
The poire au vin - a French family desert - with peanut rice balls combines with harmony oriental and western cooking styles.
The view over the garden and the mountain contributes to this extraordinary experience.
Just one piece of advice: you need time to appreciate the menu and the scenery.

Great restaurant for your body & soul

The garden itself is average with a huge grass lawn and a backdrop of green hills . The day we visited was slightly wet so the the hills were shrouded in clouds and mist which looked very much like a Chinese ink printing. The whole area is peaceful and quiet but is the attached restaurant that we went for which is famous for fusion health food. The atmosphere was surreal so was the setting and service . You face the vast green lawn while you dine and at your back is a long corridor with a stone wall with maiden hair ferns growing out of it. The whole wall is just covered with them. The food was nicely balanced between veggie and meat. All nicely presented and a lot of attention have gone into the ingredients as well. We thoroughly enjoyed this dining experience. Must try. Have to go there by taxi or hired van.
