    Best cooking class
The best cooking class we’ve ever experienced on our travels. Ivy is so knowledgeable, the class was extremely informative. The market tour was very interesting and a great introduction to the basic ingredients of Taiwanese cooking. I highly recommend booking a market tour with your class. You can really tell that Ivy loves why she’s doing - she takes care of every little detail, makes sure we really learn so we can recreate the dishes at home, she proposed substitutes for any ingredients that might be hard to find in Europe. Time flew by! We enjoyed every single moment of this class. Ivy is a gem!
Dear Vfomenko, I felt it's a shame if people can not recreate Taiwanese dishes back home, so I've tried to look for and taste ingredients while I am traveling.

    A delicious Experience.
My mother was in Taipei visiting for a few weeks, and for her birthday present we went to a cooking class with Ivy. Without a doubt it was one of the most fun things we have done together. The first look at her website and the extensive list of dishes we could learn had us both very excited. I have lived in Taiwan for many years, and have been to all types of markets, but going with Ivy was a totally different experience. She took so much time explaining the differences in the ingredients at every stall, as well as the historical context for why there are different kinds of soy sauce and how to decide which one you want to buy. From there, she explained the seasonal vegetable, how to pick them, and all the ways they can be prepared. It was a fantastic experience. We then went to her cute cooking studio and got down to making the best chicken soup I have ever had. She was so patient and gracious with all the explanations and walking us through, the reasons why certain things are done. We ending up making three fantastic dishes and having a great dinner. I reall enjoyed that it never felt like we were being sold something or pushed to try or do anything we didn't want to, but best of all was her incredible enthusiasm for cooking and teaching all about the food. If you have a few days in Taipei, and want to have a delicious learning experience, this is a not miss kinda thing!!

    A tasty experience!
I loved this experience! Ivy adapted the class so I could learn one dish I had fond memories of, and I enjoyed the detailed explanations and guidance all throughout. The market visit was incredible as well, as she pointed out all kinds of things I would have missed otherwise. And I even got to try a couple of fruits which were new to me! :)

    Amazing cooking class
My wife and I had so much fun during our cooking class with Ivy Chen. We got to pick three delicious meals, and everything turned out sooooo delicious 😋. I've was so welcoming and nice, and she does a great job explaining not only how to cook the dishes, but shares the history of the food as well as helpful tips to make cooking easier and more fun. And the food we cooked was some of the best food we had during our whole trip to Taiwan. Highly recommend taking this class if you are interested in learning how to cook Taiwanese food.

Awesome cooking class and market visit!
Started with the market tour (Shidong) which I highly recommend. Ivy is so knowledgeable about food, produce, meats, traditions/culture that the market experience was amazing. And she’s awesome in the kitchen - great with instructions and making things easier. All in all, highly enjoyable experience that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about Taiwan and food.

Incredible and education Taiwanese cooking class
We had a wonderful private market tour and cooking class with Ivy. She was both incredibly knowledgeable and well spoken about Taiwanese cuisine and local foods, and was able to meet us at our appropriate knowledge level, knowing what would be interesting and new with respect to things that we had already learned from back home (as we have an interest in cooking and Taiwanese food). As far as the actual class, she was a generous host and offered us tea, snacks, and explained to us cooking methods that we could replicate back home in the United States with the ingredients available to us. For the actual cooking class, it was very fun and flexible, as we got to pick whatever dishes we wanted to eat and prepare (we did crab, fish and soup dumplings). The food was very delicious and catered to our own taste buds (we could tailor sauces based on sweetness/saltiness and try things as we go along). We had a really wonderful day and this was the highlight of our trip to Taiwan. Highly recommend for anyone interested in Taiwanese food or cooking. She has co written a cookbook called Made in Taiwan (in English) set to come out later this year that we are very excited for.

I had the market tour and the cooking class with Ivy towards the start of my trip to Taiwan & I would say the market tour beforehand is a must! You get to see and learn about so many new and different foods and pick up some of the ingredients for the cooking a little later on.
After the tour Ivy took me back to her kitchen where we had a traditional tea service and had a chat about our cultures & I learnt more about Taiwan and the food.
Ivy was very well prepared for the dishes that I chose to cook (Beef noodle soup, Xiao Long Bao & Pineapple cake). She had timings of cooking dishes perfect and so everything was hot and ready to eat at the end of the lesson.
Ivy was very patient and fantastic at teaching! Since coming back from holiday I have made each dish again and the Pineapple cakes a few times now.
As a solo traveler it was great to feel so welcomed and accommodated for in a country half way across the world from home. Ivy was also great at pointing me in the direction of some places that sold the pineapple cake tins and boxes that I was after.
Overall it was a truly fantastic start to the holiday; I learnt a lot about the food and techniques to cooking, as well as culture of Taiwan. Ivy was so professional, friendly and welcoming I really felt at home.
Thank you so much Ivy (and sorry it's taken 5 months to get around to writing this review)!

Ivy is the all time best! I originally found out about her cooking class through a news report done about her in which she shared her vast expertise of Taiwanese cuisine. Her class is ideal for both novice cooks and experienced foodies. I brought my sister along who was visiting Asia for the first time and loves cooking. Meanwhile, I'm a part-time food writer based in Taipei and ended up having a lovely time chatting about the ins and outs of seasonal produce, sauces and dips, and culinary traditons with Ivy. Together, we made xiaolongbao, pineapple cakes, and three cup chicken. I highly recommend taking her crash couse on all things Taiwanese food and now I'm grateful to have more recipies to try at home and am now armed with an arsenal of new knowledge when I go shopping at the traditional markets.

Dear Climber, Thank you for your great review. I love both of your sisters are so friendly to sharing conversation with the market vendors. I also appreciate that you share your Vietnam and Nigeria mixed culture with me and the vendors. A cooking class will be meaningless if no interaction and sharing knowledge.

Ivy's a great chef, a great teacher, and maybe most important of all she's one of those funny, engaging, charismatic people you just get a lot of energy being around. She's just fun to be around, and she'll fill your head with tons of awesome useful cooking knowledge and Taiwanese cultural and historical tidbits.

She's also very good at something great teachers have - modulating the content for different levels of students. In our group we had everyone from "devoted cook who spent some time working in a professional kitchen" to "the microwave is a terrifyingly complex piece of kitchen equipment and I prefer to do my cooking via Doordash". We all got something out of the class. In the case of the wannabe pro, it was a deep dive into the intricacies of variations of soy sauce and the differences between mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, and Japanese vinegars that led to copious notes and a new appreciation for soy sauce. For the rank amateur it was an appreciation of the joys of folding dough into a pineapple cake.

Note, I'm the wannabe pro, and I have to admit, when I saw the kung pao chicken and dumplings in her list, I thought "oh no this is some deadass simple tourist thing where she takes you through the Panda Express menu and calls it a day." I could not have been more wrong. She's flipped my entire viewpoint of how to work with soy sauce.

Some suggestions:
DO take the market tour, if it's your first time taking her class. It's fun, you get to see a lot, and the market itself you'll want to go back and visit, except after Ivy's taken you through it you'll know where the BEST coffee and BEST fruit sellers are.

DONT just have her take you through kung pao chicken or whatever basic American Chinese Food dish you've had a million times. Stretch! Learn something new! She's great at some very different items and you'll learn a ton about cooking and eating.

DO allocate plenty of time, and even more stomach space. You're not going to leave hungry, and you're going to have a fun time talking as much or more as you cook and eat.

We had a wonderful time cooking with Ivy! We had a very easy time scheduling and arranging the class. Ivy is very knowledgeable and able to cook many dishes! The options felt endless! We chose to cook the beef noodle soup, gua bao, and shui jian bao. All were fantastic. We made everything from scratch except for the noodles for the beef noodle soup. Our class was 4 hours long, starting with Ivy offering a delicious Taiwanese honey black tea and showing us the recipe for the dishes ahead. We cooked all three dishes simultaneously, showcasing her mastery of the dishes! We ate our dishes together and she offered us some mango at the end. We were able to take home all the leftovers. She additional taught us a lot about Taiwanese history, which we found very interesting. I highly recommend this class to anyone who is looking for a deeper understanding of Taiwanese cooking and history! Or anyone just looking for a fun way to spend a couple hours :) thank you Ivy!

Ivy is an absolute treasure! Not only did we learn how to shop for and cook several Taiwanese dishes that were easy to make and delicious to eat, she taught us about the best way to prepare, serve, and drink fine tea (which was excellent!); the history and evolution of many Taiwan dishes based on the mix of different cultures here over time; and many other fun and fascinating stories. And best of all is her vibrant and warm personality. We didn't feel like customers, we felt like honored guests welcomed into her home. I can't recommend this experience enough, it is a must do in Taiwan!

Dear Anthony, Making Taiwanese tea is the best way to welcome our guests. Taiwanese tea is as famous as its cuisine, so how can we eat Taiwanese food without a good cup of tea?

Ivy responded really quickly to my initial enquiry via email and our class for 3 was soon confirmed. We really looked forward to it as we love Taiwanese dishes and Ivy did not disappoint - we had a really special afternoon in her lovely comfortable home.
We started with the traditional tea ceremony and Ivy introduced us to a wild Oolong Taiwanese tea. It was really good and we had many refills as Ivy got to to know us and explored what we wanted out of our cookery class.and how much we already knew about Taiwanese cooking.
After a clear explanation of how the cookery lesson would work we put on our aprons and started cooking! We had clear instructions to take home so did not need to take notes unless we wanted to.
We chose the popular tradition menu of beef noodle soup, Xiao Long Bao and pineapple cake because we love eating them!
Ivy clearly explained and demonstrated all the different techniques, and then let us be hands on. She gave us loads of tips and also added so much interesting detail about Taiwanese food, culture and history that the dishes really came alive! She was endlessly patient and encouraging and we surprised ourselves with what we achieved as some of the techniques/skills were quite challenging! We sat down to eat what we had helped cook and it was so delicious and professional looking. The pineapple cakes were as good as any we had ever tasted and we now knew the secrets to get the shape and filling just right! What we could not eat Ivy wrapped up for us to take away with the pineapple cakes in special boxes. The afternoon had just flown by and not only had we learnt how to cook 3 wonderful dishes, but we had had such fun! Ivy made sure we had lots of photos/videos to refer back to- taking some herself and sending them to us.
We definitely hope to return to have another lesson on our next visit. Thank you so much Ivy. 😊

Ivy is the BEST!!!

I learned so much about different ingredients and techniques to make the most amazing Taiwanese food. She is a wealth of knowledge and she instantly makes you feel like an old friend. It's more than food, as she weaves tips, stories, and history about Taiwanese culture through her cooking adventure.

She's very accommodating for any dietary needs and anything you make with her will be absolutely delicious. Her enthusiasm is infectious and before I knew it, my class came to an end, but I had a very fully belly, happy memories, new skills, and some leftovers.

You will not regret any class taught by Ivy!

I had a great time going through the process of making everything from scratch (Beef Noodle Soup, Red Bean and Sesame Xiao Long Bao, Pork Bao Zi, Gong Bao Chicken, Gua Bao, Caramel Pork, Pot Stickers). We really covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time and that is all thanks to Ivy's experience and resourcefulness. She is well-organized, which allows you to focus on the individual steps in each recipe without getting bogged down about finishing everything on time.

Ivy was patient and fun to work with and would recommend her services for anybody looking to replicate tasty homemade dishes (both savory and sweet). She is very versatile and can help guide you through any dish or dessert that you may have on your mind.

Ivy's cooking class was great! She is very knowledgeable, kind and flexible. She not only shows you how to make things, but explains how certain steps influence the taste. Also, she easily proposed various Taiwanese vegetarian dishes (or adaptations of originally non vegetarian dishes).

If you are into cooking, want to explore the Taiwanese kitchen and learn something more about the country, I would definitely recommend Ivy's kitchen. Thanks again Ivy :)
