A better person than she is a teacher, Ivy is a wonderful teacher and an exceptionally kind person. Come to learn about the technique, art, history and culture of Taiwanese cooking, and stay for a lovely conversation over a lunch you just cooked with her. Worth signing up for multiple classes with her if you are having an extended stay, and I strongly recommend trying to cook dishes you’ve had limited experience with before, even ones that look intimidating; Ivy makes it easy and fun. Ivy is friendly and inclusive to folks of all stripes and backgrounds! A wonderful part of my trip, and I’ll plan to take more classes with her once I come back to Taiwan!

We (family with 12 yr old boy and 9 yr old girl) had a cooking lesson with Ivy while visiting Taipei. It was one of the highlights of our 11 day tour around Taiwan. Ivy is knowledgeable, fun and patient. Our kids had a blast and thanks to Ivy we will be including a cooking lesson in every trip we take from now on.

My daughter , Son in law , grandkids ages 2 & 5 had a delightful experience preparing and enjoying a delicious traditional meal. The kids especially loved making the pineapple cakes . We were able to take extra cakes and food home . We started with tea which was perfect . She was so sweet and accommodating with the little ones . I would highly recommend this .

This is such an amazing experience for someone who truly wants to learn more about Taiwanese culture and local cuisine. Ivy is an amazing teacher and such a kind person. We did the market tour with the cooking class and it was so much fun. The market tour is a great way to learn more about typical Taiwanese food. Ivy gave us so much information about different types of food and fruit, it was so interesting. The cooking class afterwards was amazing as well. I love that it’s a private class, this allows you to ask all the questions you want and really learn about the cooking process. We picked the Taiwanese burger, spring onion pancake and three cups chicken. Ivy gave very clear instructions and was great to chat with. She also told us a lot of interesting facts about Taiwanese culture, which we loved hearing about. In addition, she gave tons of tips to make certain steps of the cooking process easier which can be used for other recipes as well. The food itself was so delicious, we completely stuffed ourselves. We loved the food so much that we decided to buy Ivy’s cook book so we can even enjoy her recipes more. This was a truly wonderful experience, thank you Ivy.

On our recent family trip to Taipei, we had the pleasure of taking Chef Ivy's private cooking class. Her passion for Taiwanese cuisine was infectious, and her ability to make learning fun and engaging was truly impressive. Before our class, she took us to her neighborhood wet market showing us everything from local fruits and vegetables, types of rice to live fish and meats. She answered all of our questions and let us choose the ingredients tailoring the class to what we wanted to cook. Once we were in her kitchen, the kids were involved in every step of the process, from chopping vegetables to frying on the wok. The cucumber salad and fried rice were a huge success. Chef Ivy is truly a treasure! We highly recommend this class and would happily take it again!

We had a wonderful time cooking with Ivy! We had a very easy time scheduling and arranging the class. Ivy is very knowledgeable and able to cook many dishes! The options felt endless! We chose to cook the beef noodle soup, gua bao, and shui jian bao. All were fantastic. We made everything from scratch except for the noodles for the beef noodle soup. Our class was 4 hours long, starting with Ivy offering a delicious Taiwanese honey black tea and showing us the recipe for the dishes ahead. We cooked all three dishes simultaneously, showcasing her mastery of the dishes! We ate our dishes together and she offered us some mango at the end. We were able to take home all the leftovers. She additional taught us a lot about Taiwanese history, which we found very interesting. I highly recommend this class to anyone who is looking for a deeper understanding of Taiwanese cooking and history! Or anyone just looking for a fun way to spend a couple hours :) thank you Ivy!

Ivy's cooking class was great! She is very knowledgeable, kind and flexible. She not only shows you how to make things, but explains how certain steps influence the taste. Also, she easily proposed various Taiwanese vegetarian dishes (or adaptations of originally non vegetarian dishes).

If you are into cooking, want to explore the Taiwanese kitchen and learn something more about the country, I would definitely recommend Ivy's kitchen. Thanks again Ivy :)

Ivy's a great chef, a great teacher, and maybe most important of all she's one of those funny, engaging, charismatic people you just get a lot of energy being around. She's just fun to be around, and she'll fill your head with tons of awesome useful cooking knowledge and Taiwanese cultural and historical tidbits.

She's also very good at something great teachers have - modulating the content for different levels of students. In our group we had everyone from "devoted cook who spent some time working in a professional kitchen" to "the microwave is a terrifyingly complex piece of kitchen equipment and I prefer to do my cooking via Doordash". We all got something out of the class. In the case of the wannabe pro, it was a deep dive into the intricacies of variations of soy sauce and the differences between mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, and Japanese vinegars that led to copious notes and a new appreciation for soy sauce. For the rank amateur it was an appreciation of the joys of folding dough into a pineapple cake.

Note, I'm the wannabe pro, and I have to admit, when I saw the kung pao chicken and dumplings in her list, I thought "oh no this is some deadass simple tourist thing where she takes you through the Panda Express menu and calls it a day." I could not have been more wrong. She's flipped my entire viewpoint of how to work with soy sauce.

Some suggestions:
DO take the market tour, if it's your first time taking her class. It's fun, you get to see a lot, and the market itself you'll want to go back and visit, except after Ivy's taken you through it you'll know where the BEST coffee and BEST fruit sellers are.

DONT just have her take you through kung pao chicken or whatever basic American Chinese Food dish you've had a million times. Stretch! Learn something new! She's great at some very different items and you'll learn a ton about cooking and eating.

DO allocate plenty of time, and even more stomach space. You're not going to leave hungry, and you're going to have a fun time talking as much or more as you cook and eat.

My mother was in Taipei visiting for a few weeks, and for her birthday present we went to a cooking class with Ivy.

Without a doubt it was one of the most fun things we have done together. The first look at her website and the extensive list of dishes we could learn had us both very excited.

I have lived in Taiwan for many years, and have been to all types of markets, but going with Ivy was a totally different experience. She took so much time explaining the differences in the ingredients at every stall, as well as the historical context for why there are different kinds of soy sauce and how to decide which one you want to buy. From there, she explained the seasonal vegetable, how to pick them, and all the ways they can be prepared. It was a fantastic experience.

We then went to her cute cooking studio and got down to making the best chicken soup I have ever had. She was so patient and gracious with all the explanations and walking us through, the reasons why certain things are done. We ending up making three fantastic dishes and having a great dinner.

I reall enjoyed that it never felt like we were being sold something or pushed to try or do anything we didn't want to, but best of all was her incredible enthusiasm for cooking and teaching all about the food.

If you have a few days in Taipei, and want to have a delicious learning experience, this is a not miss kinda thing!!

My fiance and I have done many cooking classes around the world; however this was the first where it was just a private cooking class with an equal cost associated with it.

We opted for the market tour and cooking class option (with an additional cost for the market tour naturally). Ivy took us around the market, introducing and explaining some key ingredients the Taiwanese use for their dishes, and what grows locally (which is a surprising amount)!

After the market tour (which was very insightful and enjoyable), we headed to her apartment which was a short 5-10 minute walk away.

Ivy started off by providing us with some Tea (with the traditional Taiwanese method) and chatted with us some more about Taiwan and where we had already been. Once we finished the tea, she reviewed the menu (based on the items we wanted to cook) and we started preparing!

We chose to make the Xiao Long Bao, Zhong Zi and Sweet and Sour Pork.
Ivy took the time to explain all the processes for us - although also referenced in the recipe copy she provided for us. It was very kind of her to have prepared some of the ingredients beforehand as they sometimes took time to 'prepare' before putting together. However she let us be very hands-on, which was definitely appreciated as that is the fun part about cooking classes.

Overall it was definitely a highlight to our trip in Taipei, and we would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking to learn and cook Taiwanese foods.
Thank you for the great experience Ivy! When we come back to Taipei, we would love to do another class with some different recipes! <3

Dear Cinyi, Thank you for your detailed review. As in a private class, this is the best way to talk to people and understand what they are really interested in local food and culture to learn. That's why I persist to provide only private classes. I am happy to share my experience and turned out helpful knowledge and skill for you. Enjoy your cooking passion and hope to meet you again.

My experience with this food tour in Taipei was simply remarkable. This was not just about sampling foods; it was a complete immersion into Taiwanese culture and cuisine, all thanks to Ivy Chen.

The tour spanned everything from humble food stalls to restaurants, each stop offering a unique culinary experience. The host expertly guided us through a maze of flavors, textures.

What stood out the most was the kindness of Ivy. She is just a genuine foodie with all of her heart. Ivy did ask what kind of food we already ate and what we like and don't like. She completly customized the tour to our wishes and preferences.

We had a great evening and did try different dishes with Ivy. Would totally recommend everyone the food tour.

Thanks again for the great evening!

Not only was Ivy friendly and knowledgeable, the food was great and she gave careful thought to how to adapt recipes when some ingredients may not be readily available outside of Taiwan. She was also masterful at the logistics, working out the timing so that our three dishes finished at the same time despite very different cooking and preparation times. I can’t wait to make authentic beef noodle soup back home!

I had a great time going through the process of making everything from scratch (Beef Noodle Soup, Red Bean and Sesame Xiao Long Bao, Pork Bao Zi, Gong Bao Chicken, Gua Bao, Caramel Pork, Pot Stickers). We really covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time and that is all thanks to Ivy's experience and resourcefulness. She is well-organized, which allows you to focus on the individual steps in each recipe without getting bogged down about finishing everything on time.

Ivy was patient and fun to work with and would recommend her services for anybody looking to replicate tasty homemade dishes (both savory and sweet). She is very versatile and can help guide you through any dish or dessert that you may have on your mind.

Ivy made us instantly feel at home and confident to cook. She was patient as we worked through the steps and was generous with her stories about the ingredients and Taiwanese food history (and present!). I recommend Ivy's class to anyone who wants to gain a greater understanding of Taiwanese food and develop some skills for the kitchen.

My boyfriend and I (American) took Ivy's cooking class with our two friends (Taiwanese). We really enjoyed ourselves! Ivy was clearly experienced, very organized! Many of the dishes we pre-selected require a lot of time to soak or cool, so she had done this in advance so we could still be involved in the whole process. (We did the first step, then we used what Ivy had prepped beforehand to finish the dish.)

Everything was delicious and fun to make. Ivy was able to easily switch languages to make sure all of us were comfortable. She was very encouraging and answered allll of our questions. We loved the cultural context she weaved in. She even stayed well past our allotted time (we had come late) so we could have our full experience. She also took lots of pictures for us :) Would definitely recommend it!
