- Blanches85Lucca, Italy1,576 contributionsThe bestThis was the best and biggest night market we saw in Taiwan. To eat there were stalls of all kinds, plus an area with all the amusement park games, a small temple, and lots of people. To get there use the red metro.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 7, 2024
- WorldTravellerSoonCanada390 contributionsAvoid gotting there during holidayWe went to the market at 5pm a Tuesday in mid February. It was still be the Chinese New Year holiday. The night market is a narrow walk way with food stalks on both side. it was extremely crowded and we couldn't get closer to the food stalks. We didn't get any food there. We walked about 3 blocks from the market and went to a random restaurant and had some food. If you plan to go, avoid to go there during holiday.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 18, 2024
- danybambiBagolino, Italy7,805 contributionsNice market..This evening market can also be reached by metro from the centre. Always very crowded with various street food stalls, games for children, clubs, bizarre things etc. Here you can also see the tiger in 3D on a corner of a market street, very fun for some souvenir photos.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 14, 2024
- MarumonKagoshima Prefecture, Japan3,249 contributionsI guess there's nothing delicious about the specialty.I arrived at Taipei Taoyuan Airport in the evening and stayed there for one night to go to Da Nang, Vietnam via Taipei. I didn't have time to do sightseeing, so I booked a hotel near Shilin Night Market and went out. The location of the hotel was good, less than 10 minutes walk away. I did some research on several websites beforehand. I bought some good-rated items from a restaurant that was introduced on every website. There were three of us, so we shared and ate a little at a time and went around to various places. They say there is no delicious local specialty, but there was nothing delicious at the night market. It's the same as a festival stall in Japan. It feels like you eat because of the atmosphere. However, now that the yen is weak in Japan, it was a very cheap dinner, so that was helpful. Next time I go to Taiwan, I would like to eat delicious dim sum at a proper restaurant instead of a night market.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024
- Melissa BSaint Louis, Missouri1,268 contributionsFun to Explore! We went a little early in the night and when it was raining and still had a good time. Definitely not as many people out. This market has not only food but TONS of carnival games, if that’s the sort of thing you’re interested in.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 20, 2024
- maryyeoHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam3,490 contributionsTaipei's biggest night market - plenty to eat, buy and do...OVERVIEW Taipei has plenty of great night markets - some are catered more for locals and can be rather small with not much to see and do - and then there's Shilin Night Market which is the most famous and largest, since it is spread out over a few streets and not really confined to "a market". FOOD This night market's famous so it was easy to google "top ten" foods to try... but as we visited during winter, it was a great decision to start with "Hometown Barbeque Chicken's" piping hot, freshly fried, super crispy yet thoroughly juicy giant chicken thigh chops which tasted heavenly in the winter cold (at about 16 degrees Celsius). The long line to this roadside cart literally on the edge of the sprawling Shilin Night Market on a Monday night was a testament to its popularity. The team worked so well together that the long line of 30+ customers was cleared in about 10 minutes. After that as a starter, we retreated to bask in the warmth of the brick-and-mortar store selling pork ribs soup. Haiyou Shiquan Paigu (海友十全排骨)'s original store at 101 Yuan Ji He Road (原基河路) was what we needed to warm up. DO Mainly shopping, Gashapon and some traditional "roadside" games... And as expected of many night markets around Asia - the quality might not be the best, but it was good fun browsing through the huge variety of clothes - from the rather fashionable for teenagers, to the super loud/cheesy/corny and cutesy clothes/shoes/bags/accessories that many little kids and those young-at-heart love. Numerous Gashapon toys' variety, quality and prices are good i.e. the exact same Gashapon machine in Singapore can cost three times higher per play.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 22, 2024
- 639abbieCanberra, Australia1,396 contributionsToo touristy for us, but you may love itOnce you are prepared for the task then you will enjoy it more. Bring serviette wet ones preferably, sweat towel, patience and empty stomach. Google what you think you like, many similar shops but not the real deal. Overall an enjoyable experience and better if you’re early, we left at 6.30pm and the crowd was becoming unbearable. Bring your rubbish with you to throw at train station.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 31, 2024
- ヤスカム101Koriyama, Japan11,032 contributionsIt was a night market that reminded me of AmeyokoWe walked around the night market a little bit. This night market felt like an ameyoko. There are shops on both ends of the road. There are restaurants and clothing stores that are gacha gacha. Many young people were walking. I thought it was lively. Somehow, I thought it was more like the Japanese Ameyoko. There are also restaurants like izakaya, and I think it is a good place to enjoy food. Some of them look very similar to Japanese shops. I was a little familiar with him.Visited September 2024Traveled on businessWritten September 26, 2024
- WydraWygraKrakow, Poland61 contributionsBiggest night market in Taiwan, definitely worth a visitFamously the biggest and also the most crowded of the many night markets in Taiwan, it's always busy - probably at times more busy with tourists than locals. It offers an abundance of all sorts of food and drink stalls, but also souvenirs, clothes and tacky toys and carnival games. At times it's incredibly crowded and loud, which will be an interesting experience for some and a nightmare for others. Definitely come hungry for a great chance of sampling all sorts of traditional foods and modern variations.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten October 8, 2024
- brymla16Hitachinaka, Japan803 contributionsAnyway, energetic. It's a place where you can feel good!It was my first time there. Anyway, it was an energetic space. The food was also delicious! The very popular eryngi yaki is a must because it is really delicious. It was a weeknight, but it was as crowded as a year-end ameyoko in Ueno. You should feel better if you go.Visited October 2024Traveled soloWritten October 25, 2024

Since it is a night market for foreigners, the prices are generally higher, but it is friendly to foreigners, so I recommend it to those who are okay with that. The people at the food stall-style restaurant in the basement were also quite good, and I was grabbed by the arm and forced to sit down. The shooting gallery also had modern air guns.

Taipei's best-known night market is one of the island's top tourist attractions. The Shilin Night Market sells all sorts of things, from trinkets to fashionable clothing at bargain prices.. Many people visit the night market just for the food, for which it is deservedly famous world-wide. The oyster omelets can scarcely be matched anywhere. The stinky tofu is delicious, one you get past the smell. You can also get a tasty steak. By the way, the clothing is made for local people, who tend to be smaller than Westerners. Be prepared to bargain. Entry is fee. By the way, best way to get there is by MRT, the Jiantan MRT Red Line station is across the road from the market.

There’s tons of street food, shopping, and many games you can play in this night market. It’s a little cramped so be mindful of what you bring and wear a facemask. The street food is good and this is a fantastic choice to have dinner at while you walk around the market.

No visit to Taipei can be without a visit to Shilin Night Market. It is the biggest night market of all night markets of Taipei and you can get lost there easily.
The market is ideal for snack foods from food stalls, which set up about 5 pm for the evening. I tried a big piece of flattened, deep fried chicken breast for 80 NT and it was very delicious. Also loved the freshly fried donuts from a vendor too. Tried an almond milk drink because the almond aroma in the air was so enticing.
Shilin Night Market can be reached by getting off at Jiantan Metro stop and walking through exit 1; not to stop at Shilin Metro stop, which takes you elsewhere.
The offerings at this night market are of anything and everything: clothing, footwear, toys, arts & crafts, you name it. Of course the food is the best of all and so much fun to taste - very affordable too.
There is now a very large seafood food court consisting of many restaurant stalls, all competing for your business, underground. Seafood is very fresh here - just choose and they will cook it for you. This seafood area is underground and covered so it is ideal to visit during inclement weather. It is bustling and filled with locals having meals. The sales people will vie for your tourist business too.

It's probably no eaggeration that one of the main draws of visiting Taipei is the vibrant night market scene. With as many as thirty different night markets in and around the greater Taipei area, as well as over twenty different food stalls recognised by the Michelin guide as worthy of a bib gourmand award, there's plenty to keep visitors occupied for many a night.
The night market in the Shilin district is the largest, one of the most well-known and popular, and often the first one visitors head for. The main stalls are housed under the roof of the old Shilin market, but also includes stalls that have spread outwards to now occupy the neighbouring streets. The most famous cuisines on offer have been well documented in many guidebooks and online websites, and are well worth a try at least once even if it's not always to one's liking. But being adventurous can be a rewarding experience. Having already tried variants of the grilled sausages, we opted to skip these and instead tried the oyster omelette (not as nice as back home), the oyster vermicelli (extremely tasty, and a nice-sized portion), and the fried chicken pieces (wish it had been less oily and salty). For those in a shopping mood, there were also lots of shops that sold toys, souvenirs, clothes, and phone accessories. Be ready for the sounds, smells, and crowds, and also very full from the food.

…this area was really busy so I can only imagine what it would be like on a Friday or Saturday night! Anyway, it’s a great place to wander round, part shopping district, part games arcade, part food market. I tried about five or six different things to eat and drink and each one was superb and VERY cheap! Photogenic spot too…

The Shihlin Night Market is Taipei's best-known evening entertainment. There are lots of things to buy, from garments to souvenirs. The Night Market has been cleaned up, it's quite safe. The food offering is tempting. I especially like the oyster omelets. The steaks are also good value. Buy the way, make sure you chose carefully, making exchanges may be difficult. Best way to get to the market is on the MRT Red Line, Jintan stop.

The best night market taipei has got to offer, with tons of food selection at the night market and the food court basement.
The best ji pai has to be the right outside the entrance to shilin night market, nearby crown price cheese potatoes. You'll see a long queue of locals waiting in line patiently, and you know you have to try it too! Different from all other ji pai stores, for they (i) deep fried the chicken, (ii) dip in a sauce, (iii) grilled the chicken before it was served. And chicken was served piping hot, crispy and tender still!
The other must try store has to be grilled mushroom inside shilin night market, the origin of grilled mushroom with only 1 store available, that is in shilin.

I was not interested in doing any shopping yet still spent two hours here. It is not like most night markets. Essentially you have real stores on pedestrian and non-pedestrian streets. Some of these streets also open to covered buildings with more stores, in all multiples blocks that take a good while to walk completely through. Add in hundreds of food stalls both indoors and outdoors (all very inexpensive, no big chain restaurants in the this market), and throw in lots of carnival kinds of games (throw darts at balloons to pop them and win prizes, etc) and you have the Shilin Night Market. This market is not really for the tourist as the stores offer inexpensive clothing and tech goods, etc, but not so much souvenirs. This market is not for the hipsters or young kids, they go to a market area in another part of town. This is for the locals who want to be entertained inexpensively. My wife and I walked for a couple hours, checking out the interesting food stalls, trying lots of things and browsing the shops. Only when we were about to leave did we find the downstairs food court with lots more cheap food restaurants but actual chairs and tables one could sit at.

This was easily the largest market we visited in Taipei.
To reach this market you get on the Red Tamsui-Xindian MRT Line and get off at JianTian MRT and the market is virtually across the road.
The market is mainly a food market with lots of Taiwanese delicacies available. You will see many stall holders cooking various items via charcoal.
It's a excellent market well worth visiting in Taipei.

What time do the stalls usually stay open until?

Hello,
I will be having a 23-hour layover in Taipei landing at 8:55pm, and was wondering would that be enough time for me to travel there before the night market closes and back, in public transportation? Or is there another night market that's closer that would be faster/easier for me to get too?
Thank you!
Written November 8, 2019
The night markets are fun but not sure how long metro runs (midnight?) so maybe check into that before heading off to one.
Written November 8, 2019
actually there are a lot of street shops in this so called night market and they open normal working hours. as for the stalls in night market on carts or outside the street shop is 4pm onwards. so depend what you want to get and see.

I'm hoping to bring my elderly mom to Shilin night market. It'll be a treat for her but is the place wheel-chair friendly?
Written December 20, 2017
I wouldn't say no if your mom doesn't mind the crowd. We did navigate through with a baby stroller. I understand the wheelchair is wider but at least your mom wouldn't be crying like our baby on the stroller.
The crowd was kind enough to make space for our stroller to pass through.
You can skip very small alleys and go early during weekdays to avoid crowd.

Hello,
Can anyone tell me the average price of a men’s jacket at this market?
I am traveling and don’t want to overpack my suitcase with jackets and would rather buy it there.
Right after Taiwan I will be heading to japan so I need a good quality thick jacket.
Any recommendations?
What’s your experience with the quality of clothes and price?
Thank you Travelers
