Top ways to experience Gold Waterfall and similar attractions

The area
Neighborhood: Ruifan District
With its air of historical heritage, Shuijinjiu (ShueiNanDong, Jingguashi, Jiufen) used to be prosperous and glamorous due to mining. Although its magnificent semblance no longer exists, the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere has persisted. With a wave to the age of the gold rush, one can still see a glimpse of its glorious past through the Golden Waterfall. Gazing at the ShueiNanDong Remains of the 13 Levels, it is like a beautiful palace that was deserted, earning it the name of “Potala Palace of the Mountain Mines”. Probing forward to the mouth of the river is the considerably distinguished Yinyang Sea, with its half gold half bluish green spectacle inspiring countless imaginations of romance. Walking along the streets of the meandering old streets of Jiufen and tasting the various kinds of authentic eateries is the love of tourists. Stepping into the Golden Museum, one can glimpse the historical traces of the mining industry culture, reminiscing of past glories from its museum, living quarters, and shrine remains. The unassuming mountain city of Houtong used to be a mining village. With the call of cat lovers, volunteer groups were established to create a friendly environment for cats and turned Houtong into a cat village for cat lovers.

Beautiful Disaster
Apr 2019 • Couples
This waterfall was formed when the mountain collapsed as Henry, our tour guide explained. A refreshing sight, relaxing, a beautiful disaster.

An Unique and pretty water falls
May 2018 • Friends
My first visit ever. It’s a small water fall with reddish, brownish color due to iron and copper mining left over. Remind me somewhat like China “Yellow Dragon (Husnglong National Park)” karst geographic scenes. It’s awesome and very impressive. We surely enjoyed it very much..

Roadside Attraction
Apr 2018 • Business
The waterfall is all right for a roadside attraction. 15 minutes is a long time to be here. You’re going to be upset if you put a lot of effort into getting here. It’s in “if you’re in the area” visit. There are several other small things to do around here, so if you come here, make sure you’re doing other things too.

Just a small waterfall to see!!...
Apr 2017 • Family
A small area with a small size waterfall. Not spectacular if compared to Shifen Waterfall in Pingxi District. Don't expect waterfall with tons of spray or get damp at look-out platform. Anyway, every location and area has something different to offer to visitors because every place is beautiful in its own ways. I never really have an affinity here except to take a few landscape shots as part of my trip. A site visitors feel less connected in my opinion, spending less time, 10-15 minutes, stretching legs, getting fresh air, selfie photos and off they go.

Waterfall was once a mining area filled with metal deposits accumulated for many years in Shuinandong mountainous region. Today, what you see is an abandoned building, mineral process plant sits right on top mountain terrain, water streaming like tributaries into a riverbed before entering Yin Yang sea. It's the lower end of river mouth that invokes contrasting colors of orange-ish & dark blue effects, worth looking at. At the same time, get across the highways to see Yin Yang sea. I must warn visitors to take extra precautions crossing highways for the view because of heavy traffic. Part of its coastline shows different mood of dark and light colors under the sun. The weather has the ability to create and change a scene drastically.

Getting there is easy by car or taxis. Another option, take the Jinshui Romantic Shuttle bus No: 891, plying between Jinguashi and Shuinandong.

This is one of the attractions we visited along the way to Jiufen, here is what we think:

Scenery: 3/5
Cleanliness: 4/5
Fun: 3/5
Physical Ease: 5/5
Value for Money: 4/5

The Good: Nice little waterfall, careful not to touch the water because of the toxicity.

The Bad: Other than a few quick photos, nothing much to do.

The Bottom Line: We think that it's a nice little spot, won't go all out to come here, nice drop by along the way to Jiufen.

Waste of time

The water fall isn't impressive and it requires a bus to get to. There is nothing nearby and you have to wait an hour for a bus. You can't pickup a taxi here either.

Nothing special
Sep 2016 • Solo
I walked here from Jiufen old street. It takes about 30-40 minutes via relatively well-kept stone steps and walkways. It was raining and windy due to the incoming typhoon but on a nice day I honk it would be a nice walk through Taiwanese jungle (not far from the road and houses, of course). I walked by one house that seems to have taken he gold coloured mineral (?) and made an outer wall with it - interesting. The waterfall itself is not very spectacular if you've seen any decent waterfalls before. Most people stop on their taxi tour for 3 minutes and then hop back into the taxi and carry on. I walked there and grabbed a passing taxi back but local busses also stop there. Make sure your taxi driver doesn't try to charge you 4 times the cost of the trip from Taipei just to get back to Jiufen, as mine did. I gave him what I thought it was worth instead and he seemed okay with it probably because he knew deep down that he was single handedly destroying the positive reputation of his country as honest, friendly people.
Skip the waterfall unless it happens to be on your way.

Small and little disappointing
Oct 2015 • Family
Heard about the gold waterfall whilst browsing online and thought it would be high and splendid. It is a little disappointing but if you do have to pass here do just drop by and have a picture or two at least you been here where you hear people rave about this gold waterfall and witness it for your own view. The only beauty is that the waterfall spreads out and is not at one point.

It takes no longer than 10 minutes to appreciate it but it is mother nature we have to thank for us to view. We then proceed to a stream where there is a stone shaped like a toad. We had some pictures taken rather quickly as it is by the road and it is not safe plus the heavy downpour of the rain we brave our way to take some pictures to add on to the dismay Gold Waterfall visit. We are now satisfied to be able to witness another nature created to the stone to resemble a toad.
