Neighborhood: Ruifan District
With its air of historical heritage, Shuijinjiu (ShueiNanDong, Jingguashi, Jiufen) used to be prosperous and glamorous due to mining. Although its magnificent semblance no longer exists, the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere has persisted. With a wave to the age of the gold rush, one can still see a glimpse of its glorious past through the Golden Waterfall. Gazing at the ShueiNanDong Remains of the 13 Levels, it is like a beautiful palace that was deserted, earning it the name of “Potala Palace of the Mountain Mines”. Probing forward to the mouth of the river is the considerably distinguished Yinyang Sea, with its half gold half bluish green spectacle inspiring countless imaginations of romance.
Walking along the streets of the meandering old streets of Jiufen and tasting the various kinds of authentic eateries is the love of tourists. Stepping into the Golden Museum, one can glimpse the historical traces of the mining industry culture, reminiscing of past glories from its museum, living quarters, and shrine remains.
The unassuming mountain city of Houtong used to be a mining village. With the call of cat lovers, volunteer groups were established to create a friendly environment for cats and turned Houtong into a cat village for cat lovers.

This landmark in Jinguashi looks amazing at night with its mixture of colors and reflections. It is a tranquil reminder of times past when mining was an important activity in this area. Worth a stop-by on the way up or down the Jiufen shopping alleys.

Getting here can be done as part of day trip itinerary that covers the Northeast Coast of Taiwan out of Taipei. Despite the naysayers, it can be done by using public transport. It is not tricky but requires some planning
This waterfall is just one of the sights in this vicinity and all within walking distance. My recommendation below will take a whole day.
Firstly take a train from Taipei Main Station to Fulong. Might take 1.5 hrs. At Fulong, exit the station and walk over to the Fulong Visitors' Centre. Where is it? Cross the road (Tai-Two highway) and turn left.. Take the Gold-Fulong bus from there. It is a tourist bus tthat departs Fulong for Ruifang.
Sit on the right side of bus. You will be given choice views of the the rugged northeastern coastline with crashing waves that remind you of some kungfu movie where to masters will face each other in a duel to the death.
You will pass many designated stops worthy of a stopover but this is not the objective of the review. The bus will finally turn left into the Shuinandong bus stop exiting the Tai-Two highway.. Do not press the bell or alight here. To do so would mean a grueling walk up to the Gold Falls. Instead.ask the driver to stop and let you alight at the Gold Falls. It is not a designated stop but I' sure he will oblige. There is a bus stop at the Gold Falls for bus numbers 788 and 886. I will elaborate on this later.
Take pictures of this unique waterfall. It is a free attraction. No fees. The brown-golden rocks are full of iron deposits which explains the color. It is hardly gold so don't run out with your pan. The water actually carries these deposits down and empties directly into the sea which you can actually see as you look away from falls. That will be the Yin Yang Sea. The deposits carried by the water mixes with the sea water to give you the Yin Yang effect.
Bus number 788 plies between the Keelung TRA Station and the Shuinandong bus stop that is below this falls. It uses it as the end terminus before returning back to Keelung.
Bus number 886 plies between Ruifang TRA Station and Longdongwan Park. So if you are heading out from Keelung or Ruifang, these are the two buses that you take to reach the Gold Falls and Shuinandong.

This waterfall is just near yingyang sea. It can be reach by vehicle with limited parking lots.
The water is from top and the yellow rocks are due to copper mining. The water from top split into few flows created the beautiful waterfall with the yellow rocks.

As part of our itinerary, we were brought to the base of the waterfalls on our way to Jiufen.
The color of the water has a golden hue, and it is believed that it's due to a combination of regular rainfall in this mining area and the abundance of heavy metal elements deposited in the riverbed.
Basically, it's a good photo opportunity, though one needs to fight for a photo 📸 spot.

We were unlucky. The day we saw the Golden Waterfall, it was raining heavily. Yet I managed to take a couple of shots. Beautiful formation from copper and iron deposits but the water is supposedly toxic. Do stop by. It is just by the roadside on the way to Jiufen.

We stopped here on our car ride to Jiufen. It's not a very big waterfall but it's definitely quite unique and interesting. It's also very close to the Shuinandong visitor center, which offers a great lookout point with views of the Yinyang Sea and of the hauntingly beautiful abandoned Shuinandong Smelting Plant.

Loved this waterfall sight. We hiked to it but most cane by car or bus. It’s near the abandoned gold mines of Ruifang. The river is also golden!

A winding roadtrip from the crowded pathways of Juifen. The road to these falls couldn’t fit 2 buses at the same time so it adds thrill to the ride.
