With its air of historical heritage, Shuijinjiu (ShueiNanDong, Jingguashi, Jiufen) used to be prosperous and glamorous due to mining. Although its magnificent semblance no longer exists, the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere has persisted. With a wave to the age of the gold rush, one can still see a glimpse of its glorious past through the Golden Waterfall. Gazing at the ShueiNanDong Remains of the 13 Levels, it is like a beautiful palace that was deserted, earning it the name of “Potala Palace of the Mountain Mines”. Probing forward to the mouth of the river is the considerably distinguished Yinyang Sea, with its half gold half bluish green spectacle inspiring countless imaginations of romance. Walking along the streets of the meandering old streets of Jiufen and tasting the various kinds of authentic eateries is the love of tourists. Stepping into the Golden Museum, one can glimpse the historical traces of the mining industry culture, reminiscing of past glories from its museum, living quarters, and shrine remains. The unassuming mountain city of Houtong used to be a mining village. With the call of cat lovers, volunteer groups were established to create a friendly environment for cats and turned Houtong into a cat village for cat lovers.

It takes 15 min by Uber ($120) from Ruifang Train Station. The formation Is super cool, but people are not allowed to climb it anymore.

Unbelivable

The journey is quite long if you are from the Taipei town itself but the view pays it off!

Have to walk from the main road about 20 minutes to get to the rock. It is beautifully crafted by the nature. Must take picture here!

Very challenging on a rainy and windy day
Dec 2018 • Family
I actually requested to our driver to go there. There was a paid parking lot next to it and entrance entrance is unmanned and free.

We (with young kids) needed to walk and climb the very slippery rocks with mud and risking slip and fall, with no help from the strong winds and cascading waves. It took us almost 30 minutes to locate and get to the elephant trunk rock, which I personally felt very accomplished. We didn't dare to go near the edge as it was slippery with strong, strong winds. A local I met actually warned me not to go near the strong waves.

The only consolation was that no photo-bomb from other visitors as we were the ones literally there.

To get back to the parking lot, it was another 30 minutes and we were back at the parking lot, we cleaned ourselves out of mud and rainwater in the nearby toilet.

Tip: Go when it's dry and sunny. Looking at my challeging journey during rainy day, my recommendation to skip if rainy.

Morning adventure
Dec 2018 • Family
We came to this rocky beach in the morning to view the Elephant Rock. Boy! You really to hike a little to reach the elephant rock. Hike by going on all 4. With your hands and legs. But the view is breathtaking. Absolutely worth it! Come early to avoid the crowd.

A place worth a visit
Dec 2018 • Family
This unique rock that resembled elephant trunk. You need some trekking along the coastal rocks before reaching this place. It is located right behind a small hill. Therefore you will not be able to see this rock along the way until you climbed to the top of the hill. This place is not developed yet and therefore don't expect to have good walking path like Yeliu. The coastal trek could be slippery. So be careful. Highly recommended for a visit.

The trunk really looks like an elephant trunk!!
Nov 2018 • Solo
I was honestly pretty amazed at the formation. Totally look like an elephant trunk. So here’s the trick. Get your Friend to stand opposite the trunk and you go on to the trunk so someone can snap a cool photo for you. DSLR or GoPro recommended. Saw some people flying their drone there! Was pretty crowded when I went but nonetheless was beautiful. Note: rocks might get slippery on rainy days. Wear covered shoes!!

This was added last minute in my itinerary. What a beautiful place!! The rocks are amazing! But be very careful when climbing uphill. And do not use umbrella even though t's hot because the wing could be very strong.

Amazing Natural Rock Formation
Dec 2017 • Friends
This is a hidden jewel of Shenao Xinbei. A short walk along the rocky beach and a short ascend to the edge of the hill along the coast, you will come across a plain of strange rock formation. It is quite tricky to view the elephant trunk and at certain angle, you can view three elephants at the cliff.
