We spent a couple of hours here on a nice summer day. The Cijin Beach was beautiful with many fun sand sculptures. The old street was colorful and the seafood we had in a restaurant there was great. I especially enjoyed looking out the Kaohsiung Harbor near the ferry station watching the cargo ships sailing into the harbor one after another. Absolutely marvelous!

We took a ferry here from Gushan Ferry Pier. Spent half a day in the afternoon here, exploring the island. This is just a small island. From the ferry pier to the beach, there were many small stalls and restaurants offering a variety of food, especially seafood. We tried many types of food and drinks. Weather was hot and sunny. Although the island was narrow and not very big, we still couldn't cover the whole island as it require quite a lot of walking.

I didn’t expect anything from this island but, I really enjoyed. Island itself was very beautiful! There are many photo spots so people can enjoy. I recommend to rent en electronic bicycle to see around.

Decided to start the day with Cijin Island, we alight at Siziwan Station – Exit No. 01 and walk to GuShan Ferry Pier Station. Along the way, there are couple of bicycle renting shop which you can rent and boarded the ferry with small sum of transport fees. The ferry come regularly and it was a short 5 mins ferry ride to Cijin Ferry Station at NT$40 per trip.
We rented the bicycle on the island . All the shops are renting at a fixed price – bicycle at NT$100 per pax for whole day till 7pm while the electric bike at NT$200 per hour. The round-trip journey from pier to windmill park is approximately 12km. Strongly recommend to bent a bike to explore the island , unless you have ample time and good stamina to walk around.
We started off with the Kaohsiung Lighthouse all the way to windmill park and make a U-turn back to the pier. Its took us around 4 hours. As Cijin is a popular tourist attraction, advisable to reach the island early to beat the crowd and avoid the scorching afternoon sum. There are a few Instagram-able sport (etc. rainbow church), reaching earlier could save time in queuing to take picture.
Place of interest at Cijin :
Kaohsiung Lighthouse 高雄燈塔
Cihou Fort 旗後砲台
Cijin Beach 旗津海水浴場
Rainbow Church 旗津彩虹教堂
Cijin Shell Museum 旗津貝殼館
Cijin Tiensheng Temple 旗津天聖宮
Cijin Windmill Park 旗津風車公園

Pros:
1. The ferry rides are frequent (approximately every 10 minutes) and cheap (NTD20 for students from any country as long as you show your student card / NTD25 for adults). The ferry ride itself is also quite smooth and short (approximately 10 minutes). The lower deck is for people with motorcycles and bicycles. The upper deck is for passengers. There are sufficient seats in an indoor area, as well as an open deck along the perimeter of the ferry.
2. There is a seafood street consisting of shops with indoor seating selling cheap seafood (usually NTD100-250 per dish), as well as small stalls selling snacks (e.g. squid ink sausage).
3. The beach is quite a long stretch and consists of black sand. I saw a lot of couples and families enjoying themselves here, such as flying kites and setting up tents.
3. The Cihou Fort and Cihou Lighthouse offer beautiful aerial views.
Cons:
1. Don't be fooled by the idea that Cijin is an island; it is rather big. Walking can get a bit tedious and it's probably impossible to explore the whole island by foot in a day.
Tips
1. At Sizihwan MRT station exit 1, there are people distributing free maps of Cijin. This map is easier to understand than those in official brochures, so grab a copy of the map if you can. From the MRT station exit 1, turn left, walk straight till the end, then turn right and walk towards the ferry terminal. This is a 10 minutes walk and there are signs guiding you there.
2. If you know how to cycle, there are various types of bicycles available for renting, including family bicycles. This will allow you to explore more parts of Cijin.
3. If you intend to explore the island by foot, I recommend a half-day tour lasting approximately 4 to 5 hours: seafood street lunch > turn right and stroll along the beach > starry tunnel > lighthouse > fort > admire sunset at the harbour. These are the main attractions of Cijin and are closely located together (right side of the map in the attached photograph) so it is possible to get around these places by foot. Other attractions like the seashell museum are located at other parts of Cijin.
4. If you are on a tight schedule or find it inconvenient to do a lot of walking, I would recommend visiting the fort and giving the lighthouse a miss. The walk to the fort is much more manageable, the top of the fort offers a 360 degrees unobstructed view of Cijin, and the fort itself is beautiful. Comparatively, the walk to the lighthouse is more tedious and the view is blocked by gates.

Cijin Island is a nice little get away from the city.
We took the ferry across which uses the same Easy Card as the Taipei Metro ( and will be slightly cheaper fare). The boat ride is only 5 mins away and there are often a lot of motorcycle scooters coming on board and occupying the lower deck.
Once there you can choose to walk but we chose to hire the electric Trishaw which can take up to 4 persons (400 Taiwanese dollars for the first hour, 200 every additional hour... 2 hours will do it). Its an easy and quick way to get to the island from one end to the other and I highly recommend it for a bit of fun.
There are a few places worth checking out - the "shell", the "star tunnel", "the fort" and the lighthouse.
If you like seafood, take your pick from the restaurants which sell cheap and fresh seafood. We also ordered some local vegetables as a simple stir fry which was absolutely delicious. Also don't forget a local Taiwan beer to go with it.

Super short ferry ride at about 5 minutes only. Small island that is divided mainly into two sections. One side with attractions such as Cijin Fort, starlight tunnel and lighthouse which are all near one another. We walked for this route and honestly is achievable but can get rather tiring especially on a hot day and some uphill walking. Hat and umbrella comes in very useful, believe it! We took about 2 hours to leisurely explore these 3 attractions before we went back to the Main Street for a drink and rest. 2nd part of the day we decided to rent an electric bike to explore the attractions along the beach, which are rainbow church, shell museum, temple and windmill park. It was so relaxing and comfortable riding the bike as compared to walking in the 1st part of the day. We alighted at all stops for photo taking and the to and fro journey takes about 1.5 hours. The distance is not far and with bike is really Super easy (even if you do not know how to cycle) because the bike is running on motor. From Main Street to rainbow beach is about 1km on Google map while another ride to windmill park is probably another 10mins (we are riding slowly and at times speed for fun). Will definitely recommend renting a bike to explore the island as it is really hot on this sunny island. Ended with a seafood dinner which is rather cheap. Prices are transparent and seafood is also fresh and delicious. Will definitely recommend visiting this island for an usual day experience.

A good day trip to soak in the local culture of Taiwanese.
Strongly suggest to rent a bicycle to take a quick tour of the island before visiting places which appeal to you more. It takes about an hour to view quickly what is recommended on the brochures.
I personally enjoyed the climb to the light house and visit to the bunkers.
Seafood is fresh and reasonably priced. I ordered a plate of fresh scallops fried in pepper and minced garlic, steamed live prawns, salt baked clams and deep fried white bait. It cost about 30$ usd.

A small island filled with tourists and with a stretch of seafood restaurants selling fresh catches. We were advised by the friendly lady owner of the guesthouse where we stayed to rent either a bicycle, e-bike or scooter to get around from Shiziwan and to enter the island. It will be quite a far walk by foot to get around. It only cost NT500 to rent an e-bike for a whole day (till 7pm) and NT150 to get onto the ferry for 2 passengers with the e-bike (to and fro). We were greeted with the calm and cooling breeze when we stepped onto the island though the sun was scorching hot. There was a 'market' that sell dried cuttlefish, salted fish etc at quite affordable price. There was a tunnel leading to the sea view which was cooling. Those who need a hideout can take a rest in that tunnel. We saw people surfing near the beach and lots of people hanging around there to play with the water. The wave was not that huge but still can do surfing kind. A nice place to chill out other than Kenting.

Travel to and in Cijing
I rent a car in Kaohsiung and stay near 85 Skytower. Should I drive to the Island or leave the car and take ferry? Will it be difficult to park in the Island?
I am travelling with family in a group of 3 with a youth. Does electric bike need driving licence? Thanks

Dear all, I planned to visit Cijing island on the 12th June afternoon, around 2pm. Just wondering if there's anything to note about closing time to attraction and etc? I saw review about the walk up to the hilltop, is it possible with the bicycle or something? We are travelling in group of 4, 2 are elderly. So we are thinking of renting those 4 people 'bicycle' to ride together. My aim is to complete the points of interest (windvane area, big seashell area, the hilltop etc) as well as shop for dried seafood items on the island. please advise if its do-able from 2pm to 5pm?

If you can skip the lighthouse, you can reach about 4pm.. because 2pm will be really hot and not recommended with elderly. since sunset is at 630pm, try to avoid the heat. We rent 2.5 hours electric bike and able to visit huge shell, windvane area, Cijin tunnel, rainbow arch. It is just one route to and forth using electric bike.

Is it possible to get to Chichin Island by taxi?

Engadine, Australia153 contributions
I presume it is possible to go by taxi but why pay for a vehicle on the ferry? Get a taxi to the ferry and travel the few minutes to the island by ferry yourself. You can walk around the island or, if you need to, get a taxi on the island.

Hello Fiona. Sorry but I have no answer to your questions. I was only on a day visit to Kaohsiung and spent only a few hours on Chichin Island.
