Most of the area from the old town to the waterfall is pretty scenic. Walking over the cable bridge is a good experience. The highlight is of course the waterfall.

Family and I decided to visit to partake in releasing a latern with wishes for the coming year. To say it was Chaotic is an understatement, tourist groups with the odd western tourist were bursting at the seams. It was a mad dash for people to get the laterns decorated so you can go onto the train track to release them. Obviously there are many vendors offering this service and we opted for the one near entrance because it was convenient (place is not friendly to push chairs) and it was not bad cost about NT200 from memory.

We took train from Taipei Main Station (台北車站) to RuiFang Station (瑞芳) to Shifen (十分老街). It's my second visit to Shifen, if possible try to avoid going on a weekend as crowd are expected. The previous time I went was on weekday and the crowd were much lesser.

All Tian Deng cost the same at NT200 (for 4 colours). It's doesn't matter which shop you go to. The staff there are very friendly, they will take tons of photos of you and help you to light up the Tian Deng.

Just a note, it's better to go to the track and light the Tian Deng when the train past the track not a long ago. Otherwise, the staff will hurry you to light the Tian Deng as the train is approaching.

We came here with some friends; rode along the Pingxi Rail (connects the small towns in this area previously used to mine coal) and spending most of our time at Shifen.
There are many shops, where you can buy food or souvenirs, located along the Old Railway. The old railway is also the place where people draw/write wishes on lanterns before releasing them (Kongmingten). Very picturesque Japanese-looking area.
Shifen scenic area is actually quite large. You can either take a slow walk, or hire a cab to take you to the Shifen waterfall. If you're not short for time, I do suggest walking since you can see the pretty scenery along the way, including a suspension bridge. There are also other things to do like visiting a coal mine park.

We took our time exploring, buying snacks (ice cream wrap here is goood), and got to see most of Shifen, all in the rain! So we also saw lanterns being released, but not flying very high or far before it came down as a plop...
By the time we left to the Pingxi station, it was almost dark. We were a little unlucky too, as when we got there most shops had closed. Made the most of it anyway, found the recommended noodle shop as stated in the brochure (really just so so), then had hot chocolate at a small cafe near the station :). Overall, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

If you're taking the public transport, get a train from Taipei Main station to Ruifang (fast/slow). Then at Ruifang station, change over to the Pingxi line (unless you only want to stop at only One stop, I think purchasing the Day pass for NTD80 is more worth it.)

Shifen Scenic Area is a wide area which includes Shifen waterfalls. Waking paths are well maintained, and you can just follow the itinerary. It is like a nature park, but they don’t charge the entrance fee.

This is an excellent tourist spot. Must-visit when in Taipei. Takes a while by train to get there, taxi is another option. Famous for sky lanterns. Has variety of decent eats. Walking distance to the waterfall.

Our group of 9 went for a release of lantern in this area and it was such an experience! It was done along the railway tracks and we first pen down some wishes on the lantern before it was lighted up and all of us release it to the sky.

Once I reached Shifen station and jump off from the train, the little community display a friendly vibes with tourist along the railway tracks trying out their sky lantern experience. It was for 200 NT way back July 2017 and I'm not sure if they still offer the same price.

Along the street are stalls that offers different kinds of food and some shop for souvenirs.

I tried their delectable peanut ice cream roll and calamari.

Busy little street where most people come here to release sky lanterns along the railway track. Unique experience to have the trains go past you at slow speed when you are decorating the sky lanterns. Listen to shop owners who will tell you to get off the railway tracks when the train is approaching.

Several shops selling souvenirs and food also. There's a waterfall nearby also. The busiest railway station along the Pingxi Railway line which connects the small mining areas during the Japanese era. There's Japanese influence in the buildings and culture here.
