The area
Neighborhood: East District/ Yongkang District
This district is suitable for settling down. The Tainan Train Station is situated in this district and the transport hub. Behind the train station stands the tallest building in Tainan. There are department stores and hotels surrounding the station. Furthermore, the National Cheng Kung University and its green area cover a vast area of land. The district, therefore, sends out an academic, yet relaxed atmosphere. The alleyways on Dasyue Road near the university are filled with restaurants and shops offering exotic cuisine. It is a quiet getaway in the hustle and bustle of the city. The Banyan Garden and the green area are a top choice for the public to have a walk after picnic. Many foreigners visit here every year. The Old Tainan Magistrate Residence is the historic monument that is the most well-preserved and at the same time the most luxurious during the Japanese rule. The Great East Gate on Dongmen Road is perfectly in sync with the modern busy traffic. The seed museum hidden in the alleyway in the East District is a utopia that is highly recommended. As for Yongkang District, it is the biggest satellite town in Tainan. Though it is modern and busy, it has stories to tell. For those who want to have a glimpse of the history of early Tainan’s development, visit here.

This night market definitely has all one needs and gets busy early on. We came at 6:30pm and it was packed. The outer areas by the roadside are just a small taste of what is inside with rows and rows of food making it hard to move.
The games had something different to Taipei with a game to roll a ball up an incline into a hole. To get 3 in a row scores you some points to cash in for prizes. Our kids liked this as different to Taipei.
Food wise nothing Super special to try although you see queues for fried chicken and anything Else here.
Check your dates as when Dadong is open other night markets shut. They co operate to not kill each Others business however it means that shops in Dadong may also be seen in Garden night market.
Definitely worth a visit and get here at 5 to avoid the crush

This place is huge and offers lots of food options. It was crowded and many places had long lines. There are plenty of restaurants and food stalls. There are also shops and arcades. Prices are very reasonable.

We were pleasantly surprised by this market as we went on a rainy day and had been warned that many stalls wouldn't open in the rain. The food was good with a few interesting options we hadn't seen before.

We went decided to went down to Tainan Dadong Night Market from Kaohsiung and took the HSR about 10 mins ride. It was a journey from the station and we took Bus 62 (FOC for HSR ticket holders) and alight at some stop then walked about 20 mins from the bus stop. HSR staff recommended to take a cab after alighting at the nearest bus stop but we decided to go on foot using Google map to explore the place. If you are not comfortable in walking then, hop onto a cab easier. We visited the night market on Monday, which is the only night market that is open in Tainan. It was super crowded when we reached around 7pm, with aisles of food stalls, games stalls at the back and stalls selling apparel & stuff. All stalls were open and most were in queues waiting to buy food. The bread stall which was at the entrance of the night market sell a huge variety at a very cheap price, as low as NT10 per bun! Food selection wise, ranging from snacks to main dishes, and from the SEA too. We saw stalls selling Singapore Laksa, Indian Roti Prata, Teh-Tarik, Thai Ice Tea, Thai Ice cream etc. Suggest that you buy whatever you want to eat when you walk past and not wait until later to return as you might be able to find the stall! LOL That happened to us when we were there haha

Dadong night market may look a bit messy and unorganized but never judge a book by its cover . The food inside is amazing and the price is quite reasonable as well. A must go if you want to taste the real local street food in Tainan.

First trip to Dadong Night Market on a Monday night. The place was jammed packed as we were told it had been raining the previous week and many shops didn't operate then.
There were queues for fried chicken/ribs and snacks.
A few lanes selling varied merchandise such as cellphone covers, street clothes, pet food and undergarments.
It operates on Monday and Tuesday.
General opinion - if you have seen one night market, the rest are similar. We skipped buying any food as it started to pour very heavily and some food were getting sprinkles of rainwater onto them. Strolling in night markets are part of the unique culture in Taiwan. Interesting.

Actually we wanted to go to Hua yuan night market instead but when we checked into our Airbnb the owner told us that today is closed and that we must go to da dong. From our Airbnb we have took a cab to da dong, it is very crowded and filled with people. We love this night market so much, it have divided into different section such as food, gaming and selling of different items. We had our dinner in the night market, ordering various food to try such as the beef cube, fried chicken, rice with meat etc. Thereafter we proceed to play the traditional night market game such as the mahjong bingo and shopping our way and this night market got really many cheap bargain not to be missed. Highly recommended to visit.

Make sure you bring your EMPTY stomach as the food choices are huge. Some tourists may find some of the food weird so come to the night market to eat if you are up to it.
Half of the market is food and the other half is the market for products. There is not a lot of great products there but cheap.
