The area
Neighborhood: West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth.
The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

This was the last night market we visited in Taiwan and we thought we had saved the best for last. But being the biggest night market in Taiwan doesn't make it the best. It was so busy that you could barely move and eventually we decided to only make our way around the periphery of the market as the middle sections with all the food were not even moving.
This market is set up in a grid design which can lead to grid lock and in our experience it did which made it impossible to enjoy. If you want to experience the busiest night market in Taiwan make sure you go very early if you actually want to try any of the food

A lot of food selection. There are few famous stalls in it, so some stalls might have to queue. This place is not catered specially for tourists, so one can expect good amount of local cultures and intersections with reasonable prices

Visiting night market, the trade mark while you are on journey either for business or leisure inTaiwan becomes a must. Check with the hotel, where the location of the night market, as the places are different on the weekday and the weekend.
And every night market has sometimes the special foods.
Nice and friendly sellers and also the good taxi drivers, as long as you bring the name of the market (ask at the hotel) you would enjoy the experience and life style of local people.

Not as good as the one in taichung but still pretty good. Only catch is that it doesnt open everyday and it is difficult to find shelter when it rains

The place was buzzing and very crowded! That is always a good sign for any night markets. I was taken aback when I saw the sheer size of the place! There were steam and smoke coming from different food stalls. We wanted to try all of them but the crowd was just too much. We were traveling with a baby so it was hard getting around the complex. If we didn't travel with our baby, I would definitely stay longer to sample all their food stalls. I think it would be better if travelling with a group so you can order and try different dish.
For the shopping area, some of them were interesting but most of them are selling the same stuff. The goods sold cater mostly to the younger crowd. Will definitely come back here on my next visit to Tainan!

This market was amazing. Tainan is known for good food and this market did not disappoint. My wife and I were amazed at the huge selection of good Chinese food.
Luckily we are seasoned travellers and we were happy for our hosts to pick out many different dishes for us to try, and we enjoyed all of them.
Not only is the food great, but the colour and splendour of all the people eating and socializing together in this huge market was a sight to see and enjoy.

Night market is one of the main culture of Taiwan, and I've been to Garden Night Market which has been one of the biggest in Taiwan, recently there're 2 new night market open which is much bigger. I can said night market is fun that gathering many different kind of traditional and interesting food and snack in one location, but you need to get use to very crowded, so we spend only 1.5 hours and back to hotel.

We were there around 5.30pm. It was not too crowded and we could walk at ease. There were food and drink stalls, games stalls, accessories (earrings, phones), apparel etc. The crowd started to stream in when we left around 7pm. Do visit this night market early to avoid the crowd.

Not sure about others... but this night market should be rated the best in Taiwan, simply because it got everything, fun and very localized... unlike some "tourist night market area" ..
Not too far from the City a taxi ride is just below NT200 from my hotel... very fair...
We had our dinner + supper here, bought some souvenir and even play few games with my kids... you will be amazed at the kind of games available here.. is not your typical night market ...
Coming from a country where night market small or huge , I still find that this night market has it own charmed and deserved to a recommendation from me .. so if you really like to explore... drop by this market, but please check the day as they don't operate everyday .
plan yourself ahead, spent at least 2-3 hours minimum at this night market
you will immerse yourself in fun and enjoyable night trying so hard to just check out all those food & games stall !

Hi there! If you are looking to walk from Hayashi to the night market, it is very far out and may take around 45min! Would recommend for you to take a taxi over instead. :)
