Thirty minutes by bus from the hotel in front of Taichung Station, in a corner surrounded by high-rise apartments, there are small houses painted in brilliant colors. I thought that only one or two houses were painted, but I was surprised to see that there were several. Although it is smaller in scale than Zalipie, which I visited twice in Poland, it is as showy as this one.

The village is actually a small compound composed of three or four tiny painted homes. Some of the walls were recently adorned with striking murals, but were inconsistent with the predominant art style of the houses.
Overall, it still is a satisfactory trip particularly for the Instagram-led crowd.

I was disappointed to read that the original artist, Uncle Rainbow Village, had passed away. I was even more sad to read that some of the original art was destroyed by the workers of the company that managed the place. The art looks cute and useful on Instagram, but not amazing.
I had arrived in Taichung HSR station from Taipei, otherwise it would’ve been too far out from the centre of Taichung as there's not much else here.

Inspired by colorful paintings and its background. Convenient location. Regretted that some places were under renovation so we could not see full picture of the village. The visitors can come early to avoid crowd. Worth to come

I have to say we were there on a rainy day, which makes it less fun of course.
Yes the story behind it is moving, and yes it looks very sweet and colorful but it is also very very small. Not worth the detour if you ask me but worth a visit if you are in Taichung.

Take 台中客運 (Taichung Tour Bus) Number 27 at Taichung Bus Station (opposite Taichung Train Station) and alight at 嶺東科技大學 (Lingdong Technological University). Bus journey takes about 50 mins. At the bus stop, continue by foot and turn right at the first traffic light. Walk another 10 mins and you will see the second traffic light. Turn right and walk straight, till you see a sign '彩虹村' at a T-junction. Follow the sign and you will reach the village.
Warning: try not to go in the evening as the place will be infested with mosquitoes. Even insect repellent did not help. The mosquito bites were big and super itchy, they won't go away even after 4 days!
If you plan to go Fengjia Night Market from the Rainbow Village, a cab costs NT210 and takes 20 mins only.
Happy visiting!

Just got back from Taiwan and I wanted to feedback on this attraction called Rainbow Village in Taichung. I had read about it on Tripadvisor but some recent reviews indicated that this place had been torn down for construction. Not true! If you had gone to this place by GPS, you are going to see a pile of construction rubble. That was what happened to me when I went last month. But after asking around the neighborhood, I finally figured out how to get to Rainbow Village. It's a little tricky, but you must drive (or ask your cab driver to drive) to the first block of Zhong Yong Rd (next to a temple), and then you'll see a sign that points you to the entrance of Rainbow Village. It's the only way in since construction started on the side of the village that used to be accessible. Hope this clears up any confusion as to how to get there.
The place is quite small and you should plan for 30 mins or so. To avoid crowds, go on a weekday morning. Basically, it's still a residential area, so don't expect to find public toilets or foods here.

I hopped in a cab this morning to head to the rainbow village. We pulled up to a large area of rubble and construction equipment. I made a joke, saying wouldn't it be terrible if we came all this way and that was all that was left. And then the cab stopped. The cabbie pointed at the pile of rubble and shrugged. Out with the old.

A NT$250/15min cab ride from Taichung metro station, it is well worth the visit. Not a very large area, only takes about 10mins to explore everything, but it was one of my highlights of Taichung. Very colourful and beautiful. Not too crowded on a weekday, only really tourists visiting. Our cab driver suggested he wait for us as it would be difficult to find a cab for return. This was very helpful. I would highly recommend you have a quick visit.

Hi I'm traveling to Taiwan soon and I need recommendations about money exchange. Should I
A. Bring peso and have it exchanged in Taiwan? If so, where in the Airport or Bank accepts Php currency to NTD
B. Buy US dollars and have it exchanged in Taiwan.
C. But Ntd here in the Philippines. Current rate is P2.1 to $1 Ntd
Thank you!

C. Better to have local currency prepared.

Where exactly is this place in Taiwan? Or how many hours from Taipei city? Is it accesible by bus or MRT?
Written November 17, 2018
Its in Taichung. Look at the address, or google. It is accessible by bus, but the easiest way to go there is by taxi. Taxis in Taiwan is quite cheap.
