The Iron Fort is small and down a few steps, but it is well worth the effort. It is one main tunnel, but the site has been preserved to a high standard. When we visited there were no other tourists.

The Iron Fort is definitely a must-visit attraction in Matsu Nangan. It is located on an independent rock on the seaside. In the early years, because of its dangerous terrain and easy observation of the sea, it was established as a military stronghold. The interior of the rock was hollowed out through "open excavation". , used as a living space for soldiers, were covered with cement bunkers and painted with camouflage. The Iron Fort is guarded day and night by elite amphibious frogmen to prevent water ghosts from touching the sentries. It is also one of the few frontline strongholds with military dogs stationed.
