The bombardment of Kinmen by PRC forces that started 8/23/1958
Sep 2018 • Friends
As a former artillery officer, this is a must visit spot in Kinmen. The bombardment of Kinmen by PRC forces that started August 23rd 1958, also called second Taiwan strait crisis. It started by bombarding a meeting location where then Taiwan Defense minister was supposed to meet with the Commander of Kinmen and three deputy Commanders. For whatever reason, the Minister and the Commander were late for the meeting, so they escaped from the bombarding. However, all three deputy Commanders got killed. The 823 War monument is located outside of the 823 War Museum which displayed tanks, aircraft and even a 240 mm howitzer M1 (aka Black Dragon) shell (check out its size from the attached photo). It’s definitely worthy to pay a visit to know more about the 823 War.
