"Old" + "street" .................What did you expect?

Old + street

What did you expect?

Maintaining a heritage antique street complete with architecture facade and outdated housing seems to be a popular trend in many Taiwanese townships/cities, where the local folklore traditions and culture can be appreciated, maintained, restored and revisited.

Hey some even come with the original occupants or inhabitants, who sit and watch the busy flow of visitors, channeling the street with boxes and bags of local treats.

It is the local touristy attraction, to see not only the present state of the metropolis region, but also the past. The nostalgic atmosphere of the good old days is preserved here.

Often in the "old street", there will be snack shops, bakeries, local food/delicacies endemic to the area, with the star local "special" product or ingredient, or manner of presentation or preparation.

In this case, the banana.

Banana flavored cakes and food can be found every few steps of this street, often with free sampling and tasting.

There is a temple nearby, 旗山天后宮 Sea Goddess Temple, while the QiShan old train station landmarks the southern beginning of the old street.

Nothing differentiated compared with other old street in Taiwan
Jan 2017 • Couples
Might be affected by sluggish economy, or time of day effect, there were quite lots of stores closed or happened to be static with least traffic, and made up a scene that, the old street was cool and not focus. Even those sidewalk cafe was filled up with just several guys, and would be better when we walked neared to pier. But one good sign was, cycling type of free tour was promoted at low cost, and might help more people hanging around on bike instead of just on foot.

A view of the old days of Qishan
Nov 2015 • Family
A trip down to the memory lane with parents, their memories actually. I think the meaning is more personal. But there are many local snacks at the side of the road which a visitor would enjoy, such as banana roll, stinky tofu, or the famous banana ice from Qishan!!

Not special Old Street
Jun 2016 • Solo
I found that shops there were average and for local groceries shopping. Not any special foods or delicacies. It doesn't give feeling of traditional old street. Just busy normal street of one of the towns

A nostalgic stroll
Jun 2016 • Solo
For nostalgics who still take pleasure in appreciating old buildings, Qi Shan Old Street is definitely a place for you. Along the old street there are rows of well-preserved baroque style buildings. They are still vibrant with shops and other organizations. There is an old, defunct railway station that has become a small but exquisite museum. Entrance fee is just NT$30 and you can see a bit of Qi Shan history. There is a real train inside and you can ride on one of the carriages to get a feel of the old days when producing sugar cane was the main economic activity.

There is a regular bus departing from Kaohsiung high speed railway station "Zuo Ying". As the bus also has a stop in Fo Guang Shan Buddha Centre, it'd be wise to spend the morning in Fo Guang Shan and then hop on the bus heading towards Qi Shan. The bus trip from Zuo Ying to Qi Shan takes about 1 hour.

Quick walk-through

It's a straight road to and fro, taking less than an hour to visit.
Notable places include the old train station which you can enter for a fee and all the banana-flavoured food.

美食一條街
Dec 2015 • Couples
This is my second time to the old street, 5 years later after my first time.
This time I can see a lot of changes on the street, at least I barely to see the detail of the "Old" street now. And the old train station is under maintenance until around Jan 2016.

Still, there is lots of food that you can enjoy. You will feel full definitely after walking around the street.
Moreover, you can take to bus to Meinong and have a bike ride.

Dec 2014
Really lived up its name as a banana street. There is a lot of food made with bananas. Cakes, rolls, ice cream, souvenirs, etc. It is a very crowded street
