We visited it in the early morning which was good because there were not a lot of people.
It's a simple temple. The most interesting detail about it is the wood carvings.

Beautiful and huge temple with a long history - it was built in the 1600s and renovated a few times. There are many floors to visit and they give you an English guide to the place.

Built in 1715, this little temple has been the most important temple in Chiayi, which was the biggest county then. The main deity is sort of like the high court in both living and under worlds. So people who felt like they were ill-treated by the government could go to this temple to seek consolation.

The Chenghuang Temple located in the center of Chiayi originated during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. It was a government-established county-level Chenghuang Temple at that time. It has been renovated many times and famous craftsmen were hired to work on it. The wood carvings, stone carvings, Jiaozhi pottery scissors, and Bagua caisson in the main hall are all made. It is exquisite and highly visible. Those who are interested in the art of temple architecture can come here to appreciate it. Next to the temple is the famous Chiayi East Food Market, which is a food gathering place for Chiayi people. You can arrange to visit and experience it together.
