The area
Neighborhood: East District/ Yongkang District
This district is suitable for settling down. The Tainan Train Station is situated in this district and the transport hub. Behind the train station stands the tallest building in Tainan. There are department stores and hotels surrounding the station. Furthermore, the National Cheng Kung University and its green area cover a vast area of land. The district, therefore, sends out an academic, yet relaxed atmosphere. The alleyways on Dasyue Road near the university are filled with restaurants and shops offering exotic cuisine. It is a quiet getaway in the hustle and bustle of the city. The Banyan Garden and the green area are a top choice for the public to have a walk after picnic. Many foreigners visit here every year. The Old Tainan Magistrate Residence is the historic monument that is the most well-preserved and at the same time the most luxurious during the Japanese rule. The Great East Gate on Dongmen Road is perfectly in sync with the modern busy traffic. The seed museum hidden in the alleyway in the East District is a utopia that is highly recommended. As for Yongkang District, it is the biggest satellite town in Tainan. Though it is modern and busy, it has stories to tell. For those who want to have a glimpse of the history of early Tainan’s development, visit here.

The university has a long history and one of the best universities in Taiwan. This university has a huge land area with matured trees and historic buildings dotted in the east side of Tainan Station. People from the city or even tourists are allowed on the premises to enjoy walking.
One of the gardens they have there is called “Banyan Garden”, which is on Google Map. Once you are there, you can easily spot this huge banyan tree planted by an emperor of Japan some 100 years ago. This beautiful tree provides good shades and views for the students to enjoy their break times or circle activities.
Nice spot to relax while exploring the city.

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was established in 1931 as the Tainan Technical College during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). It is now ranked in the top three research universities in Taiwan. It is strongest in engineering, computer science, medicine, and planning and design. NCKU has some 20,000 students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The NCKU motto is "Pursuit of truth through exhaustive reasoning." The best known feature of the campus is the spreading banyan trees, which were planted in the Japanese era.

This campus is very pretty and well maintained. Its a great place to enjoy the beautiful weather. There is a huge gorgeous banyan and a cute little pond. There is also a free museum that you can check out. Lots of students study in English so dont hesitate to ask anyone for help or directions.

The University campus is well spread out. One of the most interesting sites is the one hundred year old tree planted by the Japanese during the occupation of Taiwan and the barracks close by the architecture typical of that period.

Located directly at the back-side of Tainan train station this is worth some strolling around. The Kuang-Fu Campus has many big old (banyan) trees and some historic buildings, which were erected as Japanese army base, just over a century ago. In and around the student activity center you will find youngsters practicing various sports, dance and music; which I consider as amazing performances to watch at, especially in evenings. By surprise, you’ll find the campus also busy during the weekends as the (famous) banyan garden functions as a city park for picnics and wedding photo-shoots. Li-Hsing Campus (north of Kuang-Fu) has more historic Japanese buildings, as well as a hyper-modern super sustainable building; the Magic Building of Green Technologies. The Cheng Kung Campus (East of Kuang-Fu) is as a gorgeous park. South of Kuang-Fu you’ll find the students ‘food-street’; a street with every meter another cheap shop for foods.

After graduating from NCKU over 50 years ago. The campus is no longer recognizable. The student body has grown from 3500+ to 25,000+ including the medical school and hospital. Very impressive. I had a tour of the university and was in a conference hall for a workshop. The facilities appears to be better equipped than what we have in the US.

There is a famous big Chinese Banyan in the campus, which is told to be planted by the Emperor of Japan about 70 years ago. Outside the campus there is a famous road (Dong Fong Road) with lots of beautifuls flowers and Commen Bomhax Flowers are splendid during these days. Worth a casual walking here after a full taste of local food.

there is a big tree and big field for picnic, which is the only thing we did when we went there. The campus is huge but you definitely see some trees there.
