Fascinating Glimpse Into Taiwan's Past
Mar 2014 • Couples
We visited the Li Teng-fang historical residence in Daxi, which is in Taoyuan County outside of Taipei. It is located a short drive outside of town, set amidst rice fields.

The house, which is in nice condition considering its age, shows you how the upper-middle class lived in the late 1800's. The house itself was built around 1860 by the son of a wealthy merchant. He later went on to a high-ranking position in government.

The house is laid out so that the household workers lived in the outermost portions; the family itself lived in the center most part. Besides the architecture and construction which I found very interesting, the home still has the original wood-burning stove, kitchen items, some artwork, and other items showing you how a well-off family lived so long ago.

I found the rain-water collection system fascinating, as well as a network of mini-canals around the court yard to keep the court yard areas from flooding during heavy rain.

There are no facilities of any sort here (rest rooms, food stands, etc). Just a nice, quiet place to look into Taiwan's cultural past.
