Arresting architecture and intereting food
Feb 2020
Daxi Old Streeet has some stunning old architecture from the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). It's a narrow street, we could just fit out car down it. The food is the snack-style sreet food that once dominated Taiwan's towns ands cities. Try it, it's good, I've eaten a lot of street food and I'm still round to tell the tale. Daxi is best known for its connection to Taiwan's old president, Chiang Kai-shek, who had a holiday house overlooing the river. Chiang is a controversial figure these days, I hope the proposal to do away with his holiday house is abandoned, it's a very quaint old building, it would be sad to see it go..

Straight from airport

We came here straight after touched down from Taoyuan airport. Stayed at Daxi Laocheng, Si-Ji-Xing-Guan that was 10min walk to Daxi old street.

The shops looked modern yet mixed with old architecture. A good half day stroll to eat and sightseeing.

Lovely visit

Bustling, colorful old street with plenty to see and taste. Being a weekend, finding a parking spot near the park that leads to the old street was a bit of a challenge.

Scenic view from the temple
Oct 2018 • Friends
It is not very different from Sanxia old street. There are two things that will motivate me to go back to Daxi Old Street. (1) I love the carrot cake (savoury sauce) selling for NT$50 per bowl near the temple. (2) There is quite a scenic view overlooking a river from the temple at the end of the street. Not easy to walk down the stairs to the river from the temple though.

Shopping and eating

The old streets of Daxi is over 150 years and still have some building with Japanese style. There are shops specializing wooden furniture. You may spend an hour hopping around and takes pictures of these old buildings.

nostalgic street
Mar 2018 • Couples
was there on a sunday. The whole street was bustling with activities and humans (locals & visitors) As it's nearing nightfall, walk towards the bridge, can see the beautiful sunset from the viewing platform. There is also a sort of like playground for children. Overall experience was very pleasant as the place can be considerably clean. People was very friendly too. Only toilet is at the temple (which was very smelly). Food was very tasty too. They have a shop which was making fresh "mai ya tang" (malt candy cover with peanuts). It is a must buy. The malt wasnt too sweet and it doesnt stick to your teeth, however, it does come in quite a big packet. So ideally to share it with a group of 6. Kinda disappointed with the braised food/beancurds though. Was expecting even tastier.

Nothing special compared to other old streets
Apr 2018
It takes two hours to get there from Taipei. In my opinion it os not really worth it especially if you know other old streets in Taiwan.
I was really exited to go there because a friend recommended it. You can find anything they sell there at most night market. I would rather recommend you to go to tainan for 2 or 3 days instead of wasting one day in daxi
