If you are in Taiwan, come when the trees change colors. For the sea of clouds or 云海 and climb on trails. The bong bong train malfunction when we were there on 26-27 Dec. Trees were bare. Misty. Cuifeng lake trail for mossy forest. And the 见晴 historic trail. Japan's Yakushima mossy forest is more spectacular, but this forest is good. If you come in Autumn, stay up in the mountain for better appreciation. But in cold Dec, its not a good idea as there is no heating, no lunch after 1.30pm and no dinner after set time. Trails are meandering if you are prone to car sick and misty. So watch for the quick weather change. I didnt see Cuifong lake becoz its covered with thick fog. At the Taipingshan Villa rest stop, there is a convenience store, cafe and restaurant. Latte is 100NT, very reasonable. You can buy tea egg for 15NT and instant noodles. Free hot water. We came to restaurant at 1.34pm. No more lunch. Day before I was just in long sleeves. Next day, temp dropped to 4 degrees celsius on 27 Dec. By 4pm we have to exit the mountain because it became too foggy and dark although two-way roads are quite decently broad compared to Yakushima.
