About
Taipingshan area is a broad region that includes Tuchang, Hatonozawa, Jhongjian, Taipingshan, Maosing and Cueifong Lake. It is also regarded as one of Taiwan’s three major forestlands in addition to Alishan and Basianshan. The old lumber transportation railroad and lumber collecting machines have been left as relics of the past lumbering business. The Bong Bong train, hot spring, alpine lake, giant forest and Taiwan beech trees (Fagus, Fagus hayatae) reflect more than one hundred years of historical trails of the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area.

A wonderful trip
Aug 2019
My boyfriend and I have been to Taipinshan in 2017, although the weather is not very good, we still had a good time. We lived in Cueifong Villa then took a walk to Cueifong Lake, enjoying seeing the mist gradually came to the lakeside from Lake Scenery Platform, it was such a beautiful sight. At that night, we came out from Cueifong Villa to see the stars. Due to the weather, the stars wasn’t as bright as my boyfriend expected, I still thought it was a great experience. The next day we visited Taiwan Beech National Trail, it took we several hours to finish. But it’s worthy, I love the atmosphere and the scenery of this trail. If you want get close to nature, Taipinshan definitely will be a good choice.

Nice hiking trails with good views, but torturous drive up mountain
May 2019 • Family
There are many hiking trails with nice views in the park, can easily spend a whole day there doing plenty of hiking. But the drive up and down the mountain was rather torturous for people not used to winding roads, we had a local driver and felt queasy throughout the drive. Survive the drive and you will be rewarded with beautiful nature views. Be sure to bring insect repellent and snacks, we only came across 1 convenience store.

Day Trip from Taipei
Sep 2018 • Friends
We booked a taxi from Taipei to Taipingshan (6000TWD/5people/10hrs). It was a long ride. From Taipei to Taipingshan Entrance was 2.5hrs. I had us went straight to Cueifong Lake which is another 1hr ride from the entrance. We spent 1hr in Cueifong Circular Trail and had lunch at Cueifong Villa, meal costs 120TWD. Then we went to Taipingshan Village, spent 1hr taking the trail to Zhenan Temple surrounded by Japanese maple trees. We started going back to Taipei around 3PM and arrived at 6:30PM.
The temperature is comfortable at 20C but it rained a lot and heavily.
A day trip is not enough to explore all trails but enough to get a glimpse of the mossy forest trails and a hint of autumn feels.

Nature without the commerical touristic hype
Aug 2018 • Couples
Come prepared with umbrella or raincoat! We started the day well as the weather was great! But it started to rain an hour later and there was no place for shelter at all!

Although it was summer when we visited, it was rather cooling even before the rain came. So have a thin jacket ready.

Impossible to Visit All 18 Attractions and 9 Trails in One Visit
May 2018 • Couples
Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area (太平山國家森林遊樂區) is one of the 18 national forest recreation areas in Taiwan. It takes about 3 hours for the 140 km (87 mi) drive from Taipei Station to the Cueifong Villa (翠峰山屋) at the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area. The 35,883 km2 (13,855 sq mi) Taiwan is a mountainous island. In such a small area, Taiwan has the largest number and density of high mountains in the world. There are 286 mountain summits over 3,000 m (9,800 ft) above sea level on the island with Yushan (玉山) being the tallest mountain in East Asia.

This mountain road is easily damaged during typhoon season and heavy rain. Most of the road is a 2 lane paved road with a center divide line except the Cueifong Scenic Road from Taipingshan Village (太平山莊) to Cueifong Villa which is a paved road without the center divide line and limited to small cars only. The recreation area covers an area of 12,631 ha (31,212 acre). There are some popular spots such as Jioujhihze Hot Spring (鳩之澤溫泉), Jhongjian Visitors Center(中間遊客中心), Jancing Historic Trail (見晴懷古步道), Taipingshan Villa (太平山莊), Cypress Forest Trail (檜木原始林步道), Taiwan Hemlock Forest Nature Trail (鐵杉林自然步道), 翠峰湖環山步道 (Cueifong Lake Circular Trail), 台灣山毛櫸步道 (Taiwan Beech Trail), and 翠峰山屋 (Cueifong Villa). If you like hot springs, then you definitely should pay a visit to Jioujhihze Hot Spring. It is a weak based sodium bicarbonate spring with no odor and clear water. After the hot spring, you can visit the Jancing Historic Trail transformed from the old Forest Railway- Jancing Line for wood logging. I really like this trail with its natural beauty and historical heritages along the railway. Taipingshan Villa is the major lodging and restaurant area. One of the most amazing scenes is the Japanese Maple (紫葉槭) turning red in the early May instead of the autumn Maple. You should take the challenge by taking the 496-step stairs surrounded by a tunnel of red leaf Japanese Maple to the top. Here you can take the 0.61 km Cypress Forest Trail at the elevation of 2,000 m (6,562 ft) and enjoy the forest bath and the nature. Last but not least, you should take the 3.95 km (2.45 mi) Cueifong Lake Circular Trail to see the largest alpine lake in Taiwan. The changing environment with its surrounding forest and waterfowls in mist makes it an unforgettable adventure.

Driving on the mountain road requires caution at all times. Weather is continuously changing, and bringing an extra coat even in summer time is recommended. It is almost impossible to visit all 18 attractions and 9 trails in one visit. Therefore, plan in advance and follow the plan even if you stay overnight in the villa inside the forest recreation area. You need to bring a camera and lenses if possible because you need them all.

Autumn in Summer!!!
Jun 2018 • Friends
I always look for outskirts whenever i travel. I enjoyed this trip. Good thing we went during weekday instead of weekend. There are fewer tour buses. Most of them are senior citizens.
A lot of walking and some are elevated walks or should i say trekking and hiking tours.
It’s supposed to be summer but it’s so foggy and we saw autumn colors with the red maple leaves. 🍁

Significant Mountain scenery
Mar 2018 • Friends
Hi everyone,I'm a student in Hualien NDHU. Two monthes ago,I went to Taipingshan with my friends who study in Yilan. We drove car and rolled down the window enjoyed the cool breeze. When we arrived the Visitor Center, the temperature just 14 degree Celsius ! (Almost 39 degree Celsius under the mountain )
We climbed the Chinese Hemlock Nature Trail which have 1,300 M.But we just spend 1.5 hours ''running''to the top ,so we were huffing and puffing by the time we'd climbed to the top of the hill. We felt a little shock when arrived the top - there are nothing ! Just a small platform. But that is the other trail's entry.
We have no time to climb it. We hope we can come here together next time!

Wonderful getaway
Apr 2018 • Friends
We rented a vehicle from Hualien to Taipingshan then to Yilan for 1300NT plus pay for driver's lodging up the mountain at NT 2900.
Getting there was tough ,5hours with almost 2 full hours of winding hairpin turns on mountain roads. I think it is better to get there from Yilan about 2.5-3 hrs journey. Entrance fee to the park NT100 for students and NT150 per adult. Parking fee was NT100.
We stayed at the main lodge . Only two types of accomodation up the mountain . The main lodge and Cuifeng lodge 40 min away . Accomodation at the main lodge was very basic . 3 star . No wifi.
Breakfast and dinner were ok Catering to the bus tours . No a la carte .
The onsen about 40 min away before reaching the lodge is a must place to go . Swimming costumes and Swimming caps must be brought along . Entrance fee was about S$5. Also bring along a NT10 for the locker . Towels are not provided though shampoo and soap were . The onsen was simply beautiful and heavenly .
There is a cafe on site selling food and ice-cream . Not far off there is also a trail to the sulphur hot spring where you can boil eggs and corn . Unfortunately we did not have the time for that. All in all allow 3-4 hrs at this place .
The other must visit place is Cuifeng lake . There is a trail around this beautiful lake about 2-3 hr walk . Platformed at the initial part . We only managed to do half an hour walk because of time constrain .
Very beautiful park but fairly inaccessible unless you have a vehicle . Also not for those who have carsick .
