From times gone by
Mar 2021
Datong Old Street is a mix Japanese-style buildings from the colonial era (1895-1945) and traditional Taiwanese shops. It's an area that has largely remained intact, perhaps because transport is not very convenient. The shops still sell herbs and traditional Taiwanese foods. Some offices have been squeezed in. The area is undergoing a process of gradual gentrification as young professionals move in.

As slice of old Taiwan
Sep 2020
Datong Old Street is a fair walk from the nearest MRT station, which explains why it is not very popular with travellers. The street is a mixture of pre-war Japanese and Taiwanese architecture. Many old fashioned shopfront stores sell herbs and dried food, with a few modern offices squeezed in between. Younger people are moving into the area. It's a neighbourhood from an older time; it's worth a visit if you are in the area.

More traditional market smaller than others
Apr 2019 • Friends
Close to the MRT, a more traditional market with lots of food options. A bit less tourist, more locals, visiting this market. Convenient WC signs for clean WC's.

Streets from an old era - a must visit
Mar 2019 • Couples
This district has preserved buildings from the period of Japanese occupation. They have mixed flavor of pre-war Japanese architecture with Taiwanese modification. They are truly remarkable and worth visiting. The line of shops are mostly herbs and dried foods, but there are some souvenir shops in between.

You can find so many historical building in this place. People give them a new life, lots of special small shops opened in the alley. May need few hours to spend your time here. You would find good places to buy special gifts and chat with locals!

The photographs in this review do it justice ..

Only thing I would note: some of the buildings have been rebuilt to look old, other new buildings don't even try that much to look old, and there are a few buildings that have that authentic look kept in place. I wouldn't call this one of the top five destinations (as LP does), but it is nice, and if you're nearby it is definitely worth going to check out. But, if I was clear across town, I wouldn't put in the time and energy it takes to come see it. Picturesque, but ...

Area with Confucius Temple and Paoan Temple
Apr 2018 • Friends
Datong is the area where you will find Taipei Confucius Temple and the beautiful Paoan Temple. It is on Dalong street. See my reviews of both Confucius and Paoan on how to get there. It is very easy. But to this street. Not sure as I have been there, if it is actually a sightseeing event. There are old streets in this neighborhood, and I think that is what they are referring to, but not unlike what you would see elsewhere. Go for the two temples, it is definitely worth it, but don't go looking for any specific street.
