Xiaoyoukeng is one of the popular sites and probably the most visited stop on the Yangmingshan National Park trails. To get there from Taipei MRT Main Station, take red line direction Tamsui, get off Jiantan MRT station then take one of the buses serving Yangmingshan National Park. Buses from Jiantan MRT Station terminated at the park entrance. You will then take Park mini bus #108; this mini bus from the park entrance will take you through the scenic trails and making stops at your requests. Be sure to check the next bus schedules along the trail stops and make a timely visit once you get off. Entering the park is free. Park covers huge wide area; Instead of visit on foot and will soon wear you out; you can buy your bus tickets at the park entrance office and ask for a small hand-out bus route guide map. Trail buses run every 15-25 min going into the park and are often very crowded on a good pleasant day. Once you get your tickets you step out to the corner of the building there you will see visitors queue up for the next bus. If you are a foreign visitors who do not speak Mandarin, be sure to count the stops before the boarding and show the driver where you want to get off since the announcements are in Mandarin. If you are not sure just look out the windows; when you see a huge spectacular landslide terrain with rising sulfur vapors coming out of volcanic vents you are getting close to the Xiaoyoukeng bus stop. Walk around the area you will come very close to see the geothermal wanders of fumarole's sulfur crystals and small
pockets of hot springs. Nearby the bus stop there is a hiking trail that will take you pass bushy arrow bamboo plants and lead up to the summit of Qixing Mountain where you have a panorama views of greater Taipei, mountain groups and Jinshan coastline on a clear day. The trail surface to the summit is uneven so be sure to wear proper foot gears and you might want to take a hiking pole with you. If you are not so up to the hiking, the Xiaoyoukeng area is well worth of pictures taking and the geothermal observations from the viewing platform. There is a visitor center and snack shop inside for your rest and refreshment.

It is not everyday that you can climb a mountain and see steam coming out from the ground. So Xiaoyoukeng is indeed wis where you can see this wonderful phenomena. You can conveniently take bus 108 from Yangmingshan bus station to get here. You can just climb up to the second platform (l1.1 km trek) and come back down if you do not intend to do the whole trail. I was definitely impressed by this and it is one of the best place I've been in taiwan. Im so glad that i decided to go here.

I'be lived in Taipei for 5 years, but this year was my first time going up to xiaoyoukeng. What a fool I've been! This is one of the most magnificent places I've been to in all of my time here.
It is majestic. The hike up the fumaroles is stunning. This is a must do for nature lovers. The view is stunning. If you have only time for one spot in yangminshan park, this should be it!
The hike up is steep, so dress appropriately. You should bring water as well.

It was extremely windy and sunny when we visited. The fumaroles were interesting and were easy to walk to along the boardwalk.

We made a day trip to Yangmingshan National Park from Taipei City using public transport and were pleasantly surprised how easy to do it by subway and bus. One of the highlights is definitely Xiaoyoukeng – a showcase for fumaroles spewing mysterious clouds of hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg) fumes. While it is a dormant volcano, you can still feel the impact of the geothermal activity. Climb the steep footpath, and you will get a better vantage point to appreciate the entire area and beyond. We managed to get to the top viewing platform with stops along the way to catch our breath and inspect the fumaroles up close.

Xiao You Keng is volcanic recreation area which is like a real-live volcanic science experiment. Xiao You Keng is steamy, with the smell of sulphur. It also has fumaroles, which emit volcani vapors. Xiao You Keng is near Beitou, you can get there by bus or car. Xiao You Keng is an interesting day out, if you like volcanic activity.

This volcanic area is like a live outdoor science experiment, It has brilliant yellow sulfur crystals, with volcanic vents. Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area has some landslips, but it's fun to visit. You can get there by bus, but car is easier. The Beitou area is known for its volcanic activity.

You can really smell the sulfur. We were here on a colder day with low cloud cover. The trail from the parking lot is short and worth the walk. You'll quickly see the yellow sulfur on the mountain side from the sulfur steam releases at various places. There are several hot water little streams along the walk way along with small steam releases, too.
BOTTOM LINE: Worth your visit to see. I wish we were here on a clearer day to see even more views both up higher and to the valley below. We enjoyed our short stop of about an hour here. MY RATING: 8/10.

It was very unfortunate as it was raining. We barely could see anything in the valley. There were a few spots with small fumaroles and some people even touched the bubbling water
