this very nice house takes 5 minutes if you want, and it's free so no reason not to go in, - you have to take off your shoes to do that

Plum Garden is a lovely small house near Hot Spring Museum. Calligraphies of Mr. Yu Youren, an educator, are displayed. The entrance is free.

The famous calligrapher Yu Youren used to live here, and the tranquil Japanese style villa has well reflected his aesthetic taste. The local government has done a great job in both renovation and maintenance of the property as well as the trees/plants.
When I was there, a special exhibition of the famous singer Teresa Teng (who died tragically in 1995) was being held so no photo was allowed inside the house.
It was free admission, but you have to take off your shoes in order to preserve the floor. A lovely place to visit!

This villa is quite fascinating. It is rather small, but it has a number of mimentos from the post-retrocession era. The calligraphy by talented educator Yu Youren is regarded as being very good. You may also see mimentoes of Teresa Teng (also known as Deng Li-jun). Her haunting melodic songs can be heard wherever Chinese people gather. The plum flower was much loved in the post-retrocession era, when Chiang Kai-shek still had hopes of recovering the Mainland. The plum tree flowers when the weather is coldest. Although the villa is small, it has some interesting souvenirs. Entry is gratis.

A waste of time unless you are interested in a small
exhibition of Teresa Teng, a song artist back to 80s and another historic figure. Most people complete the viewing under 10 minutes.

The lady was nice. We had to take off our shoes and put at the designated place. The calligraphy was interesting and had a peeking into the life of the greatest artist. They have really nice souvenirs sold there. The folders and keychains are really nice.

This old house which has been renovated and refurbished must have been quite some dwelling in it's early years. It is pleasant to see that history is not being demolished but cherished.

Situated in line with Beitou Hot Spring Museum, this Plum Garden looks like an ordinary house from the outside. You need to take off your shoes before the entering the house, they provide cabinets for the guests where they can leave their shoes. We went there on a Sunday so there were plenty of tourists, nonetheless we still enjoyed our visit. It is quite small but it is full of display which feature good calligraphy. The house is made of wood and features Chinese jars, figurines, tea sets. There is also a tourist information center right in the entrance of the house.

Beitou is known for its various hotsprings, but in the midst of all this, there is the Plum Garden of Yu Youren.

Yu Youren was a famous politician, educator, and most importantly a reknown calligrapher across, and he lived in the Plum Garden after moving to Taiwan after KMT was defeated by CCP.

He was an active politician, which began when he was still in his teenage, when he impored the country official to assassinate the Empress Dowager Cixi. He later took important offices in the Chinese Government, and after moving to Taiwan he spends his summer in the Plum Garden to avoid being lobbied by various parties.

This place is very simple, with a sense of Japanese Zen throughout the simple building, but if you were living here during Mr. Yu's time it would be considered a luxurious mansion of that time.

When you enter the house, you will have to take off your shoes, and you'll see various calligraphies written by Mr. Yu.

My favorite writing of his is in 10 simple words: 『不迷信過去,只創造未來』, which means "Do not be superstitious about the past, just focus on creating the future."

The Plum Garden is not opened on Mondays and National Holidays, and it's just a ten minute walk away from the New Beitou MRT Station.

If you are into calligraphy or Taiwan's history, or just bored after a hotspring, don't miss out this place in Beitou.
