We walked here for breakfast as it was near our hotel. The shop at the entrance had a queue and we joined in to sample the local food. Had to sit on a small table outside to have our breakfast. Price was cheap. Took a walk around the various alleys and explored this market. Plenty of street food here. We even came across a small temple inside.

This visit happened in May 2019. Great place to visit to try out the wide variety food!

We went on 2 occasions as certain stores/certain parts of the market were closed. There is an alley further down the to the centre of the market which sold a variety of food and drinks. Great for sharing and tasting as one doesn't have to go to multiple stores to tey the items

About 15 mins walk from Tai Chung station, place is packed with locals looking for something to fill stomachs in the morning. Be ready to eat whilst standing or share tables with others.

The 2nd Market at San Ming Road in Taichung city is one of iconic landmarks and has a long history. The building looks dated and as good as its "original" state since it was started many years ago. It is a local version wet market where locals visit to buy groceries and fresh ingredients for cooking. One could buy everything here like meat, vegetables, seafood, fruits, sauces and spices, dry and sundry goods etc.

We were here on the Saturday morning around 9.30am. Unfortunately, many stalls were not opened (or already in the midst of closing).

In addition, it is also a place where several popular and must try food stalls are located. These stalls usually have a long queue and selling local snacks which we tried such as 王記菜頭粿糯米腸 (fried carrot cake and rice dumpling with sausages), 特色攤商山河滷肉飯 (braised pork rice), 鄒記蔥油餅 (deep fried onion pancake), just to name a few. The prices are reasonably cheap and starting from NT25 onwards. True indeed, the food here are tasty and yummy and so be prepared to exercise some form of patience while queuing but its worth the wait. Unfortunately most of these stalls have limited seats and so we decided to take away the food and ate them elsewhere.

The market is quite big though and was built like a circular shape. Though with ample lightings, the floors are wet and slippery (so be careful) and quite humid as ventilation needs to improve.
Some stall owners placed their tables and chairs and extra cartons of goods along the already narrow walkway could pose another challenge to visitors.

If you want to have a taste of visiting a local market and try some of the well-known local snacks for breakfast, then you should not give this market a miss. But be sure you go there early to aviod the long queues or to grab the fresh food like fruits.

Surrounding the 2nd Market lie rows of shophouses where you can walk around and shop. As it was still early when we were there, only a couple of them were opened, like a book store, a shop selling fruits and juices, cake and pastries.

The 2nd Market is within walking distance from our hotel at Heping Street (you may like to refer to my earlier review about the hotel here), about 12-15mins. It is also about 10mins walk to Taichung Station. Quite an accessible location.

I decided to eat at the 2nd Market for my breakfast. However I got there a bit too early since a number of the stalls were not open or were still prepping.

I entered through the Zhongshan Road entrance which had a nearby open courtyard, a graffiti mural and and two walls lined with historical photos of the market. This was a nice spot to come back and enjoy your food.

Once inside the market, I wandered through the narrow aisles seeking out my breakfast. I passed by fruit stands, butcher shops, a temple food stalls and carts. Even if you don’t eat or buy anything it would be a good place to just walk through.

I finally stopped my wandering at Archie’s Traditional Noodle shop that touted three generations since 1918! They had lots of seating for their customers. They served really good dry wontons (peppery) and I also liked their Fuzhou dry yi noodles (adding Archie’s red sauce gave it a richer and little spicier kick). It was only 105NTD for both with most of their menu items running between 30-50NTD each. So cheap.

One of my favorite markets in Taichung, named Taichung's Second Market, is easily accessible with public transport, surrounded by historical buildings and local businesses, and has a wonderful selection of Central Taiwanese snacks. From braised pork belly and radish cakes to Wontons and pig intestines, and several buffet-style (just point) food stalls and noodle shops, the food is cheap and fresh and authentic. There are also coffee and tea shops as well as boutiques, produce markets, and several butcher shops in and around the market.

Though the appearance of the market looks like some old and torn market, but the foods offered in the market were hidden gems!

Though most people recommended the stall that offered Glutinous Rice Sausage and Carrot cake for breakfast, I would recommend the stall further in, that offered the Braised Meat Noodle. Try that, it's nice!

Other than the foods, the rest of the market was actually nothing much then.

Went on a Monday but was quite disappointed as many stalls were closed. Managed to grab some food from an economy rice vendor. Went back the next day during lunch time to check out the fully opened stalls and managed to try out food with one of the well known stall. Result of it, is just satisfactory.

Read a lot of blogs online that recommended this place for breakfast. Came here with my family and had a look around. It is a small market and there is nothing much. However, we had a really good breakfast at Arashi: minced pork noodles and rice. The highlight was the mince pork sauce!! There are shoe stalls around where we got shoes for a reasonable price. the stall owners are pretty good at recommending suitable shoes to wear. We also tried the radish cake at the first stall from the main entrance but did not enjoy it. The owner enforced a minimum purchase of 3 radish cakes and when we wanted to sit down to eat, she told us that we cannot sit there as we ordered the food to go ( take away). PS the price was the same for a dine in or take away, she was just not happy that we insisted in trying just one cake.
