The area
Neighborhood: Beimen Area I
Beimen is the coastal salty region. In the early days, the soil was infertile for agricultural development, so people in the region turned to aquaculture fishery, which has developed special scenery of its own. The area not only has the renowned Beimen Crystal Church and the one and only Jingzaijiao tile-paved salt pans, but also a breathtakingly beautiful sunset in Taiwan. With black-bellied terns hovering over the lagoon each October and November, this area has become the destination for bird-watching pilgrimages. Another holy place for religious pilgrimage in the vicinity is the Nankunshen Temple, which is considered Wangye (God of Pestilence) Headquarters Temple. As in Syuejia, famous for its abundance of milkfish, visitors can see the whole process of catching milkfish and experience the pilgrimage event, the Shang Baijiao Centipede Procession, organized by Cihji Temple. The procession can extend to a few kilometres, and is exclusively available here. The temple also houses very traditional Taiwanese artworks, Koji ceramics by Ye Wang. In Jiangjyun District, there are Mashagou Coast Recreation Area perfect for water activities and unique fan-shaped salt pans. The Jiangjyun Port and Cingshan Port are two essential fish wholesale markets. Every afternoon the fresh fish caught is brought back by fishing boats, and the special way of selling the fish has kept tourists lingering in the market.

NanKunShen represents the best paintings and relief art, sculptures, and Porcelain works of any temple I have visited in South East Asia. The sheer variety and high quality of works is staggering.

We enjoyed reliefs and stories behind them of the original temple to the main Wang Di Ye temple. You will want a trained guide to tell you stories such as the brothel owner from Banchiao who donated a "lou-ti" wall panel with his name to tell temple goers where to go for fun.

Ying Zai Gung (Wan Shen Ye) is small but important to pray to as recommended by Guan Shi Yin because it was his land where he tended cows that became this temple with 5 Wang Ye (gods).

Ling Shao Bao Dian is behind, it has modern era art depictions, which include a painting of Yankee pitcher and World Series winner, Wang Jian Min. It is filled with unique master works including the porcelain tableau sculptures on roofs and the largest cast ceramic wall relief of Yu Wang Da Di and his followers, which is an amazing piece. My favorite is the Jade picture of 100 loyal ministers of the emperor, which features a rainbow made of jade on either side of made of eight different colors of jade. It cannot be replicated those jades are so rare.

The temple complex is big and beautiful. Incorporates other gods of China (Daoism is a vey eclectic religion). Take into account 1 hour visit. Well worth.
I had problems finding the place with Waze. Used Google Maps (no offline map for Taiwan in Android and in IOS)

This is an amazing temple about an hour by taxi from Tainan Train Station. The cost of the taxi was about a thousand TWD and when I got there I noticed that the temple was busy but there not any taxis. So I hired the taxi for the day for 4,000 TWD Afterwords we worked our way back to Tainan, stopping at small temples along the way and getting lunch, finishing up at Luermenma Temple.

Anyway, Nankunshen is a very large temple complex that features several different decorative styles with some extensive ornamentation. I visited many temples in Taiwan and this one was unique in its design and art. Note that at the entrance there are restrooms, vending machines for beverages, and a small ice cream shop but no ticket office as it is free to enter. On the left as you enter is a separate museum that charges a few dollars. It grants you admission to some separate grounds and buildings with small museums of butterflies and shells.

Overall I spent three hours here and found this to be quite interesting. I really enjoyed Tainan and would recommend visiting this city. And if you make it here, you should see Nankunshen!

This temple is awe-inspiring. The grounds are quite large and you could easily spend 2 hours touring them. The temples are central. To the left and right there are beautiful gardens to explore with many more statues and idols.
I went in January when it was quiet - don't go in February (new year) if you are a tourist as you will likely disrupt prayers and it gets quite crowded.
There are English information brochures if you go to one of the desks to the right of the temple.
