Top ways to experience Anping Fort (Anping gubao) and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

    Very little original fort left
The remains of Fort Zeelandia are interesting if forts are your thing. Built in 1634 by the Dutch during their rule when Taiwan was known as Formosa, it was later captured by the Chinese and renamed Anping Fort. Visit the small museum if for no other reason than to see the paintings of how close the fort was to water and then go outside to see how far away the water is viewed now. Most of the fort has been reconstructed with few remaining original bricks and a piece of the inner wall still standing. It is a good climb up steps to see the cannons. The grounds are extensive. Good for exercise but not much to see on a walk except for some exceptional old Banyan trees. We visited mid week so there were few visitors. You will get a brochure with the entrance fee. I gave it an average rating because very little of the original fort is left but gave marks for updating the structures to give an idea of what the original was like.

Nice historical fortress besides the old street
This was our second stop in our trip to Tainan. It is a nice breezy place for walking around with a gift shop and a tower to climb up with lots of love hearts pinned and stringed there. Tainan is the old capital of Taiwan, and has plenty of cheap and good food!! cheaper than Taipei. Highly rec Wang Shi Fish Skin #612 AnPing Road, probably the BEST, besides the beer fried fish and tandoori chicken at Chimei Museum Christmas market! We found the beef soup, the signature Tainan breakfast meal, too sweet for our likings. I booked a driver for my 9 days Taiwan round trip this time. The driver picked us up from the Taoyuan airport, and drove us 4.5 hours to Tainan. Our highly rec driver is from Taipei, and his name is: Kevin Lin (hp# +886 952537969), a mountain enthusiast who can speak English! Our 9 days itinerary covers 1. 3 days Tainan (Anping, Chimei), day trip to Kaoshiung and Eluanbi the most southern tip of Taiwan 2. 3 days Guanziling hot mud springs (highly rec King's Garden Villa with absolutely wonderful wide range of hot springs baths++), Alishan sunrise (need to book train ticket online, unfortunately too cloudy to see sunrise), Gaomei wetland (very very windy, but truly an unique sight!) 3. 3 days Taipei ( my 4th visit to Taipei, but discover Hua Shan - an artsy haven must go!), including day trip to Yilan Kevin drove a total of 1800 km over the 9 days he says.

    Just a historical site
A historical site that might interest some people who know the history. But for usual tourists, there's really not much to see. There are also some stairs to walk if you want to go to the building, so I can't really recommend this to older people.

    Dutch History
The fort was mostly reconstructed but still contained a lot of information about the fort, Dutch occupation, their defeat and the subsequent uses by Japan and Taiwan for the property. The Scouting Deck rose above the fort and had a good view of the Anping area. It was an easy climb. At the top people locked their love wishes to the railings. The Memorial Hall next to the Scouting Deck contained a gift shop. The Fort Zeelandia Museum was built next to one of the original Fort walls. In the back there were a couple of cannons as well as covered excavation area . Admission was only $50NTD and good for an hour visit.

    Fun place for history buffs
The grounds of the fort are nice with a museum, excavation site, sitting area with trees and then the fort/tower itself. The walk to the fort is quite a few stairs with no real options up for those who can’t use stairs (to be expected with a ~400 year old structure). Overall it is well kept with a tower at the top that has a great view of Anping (just be prepared for more stairs!). If you’re interested in history I would certainly recommend a visit.

Well kept area with a lovely view on the top of the fort
As stated by many reviewers, there isn't much left of the original fort but the little gift shop at the top of the fort was a welcome AC cooled shelter on the melting hot day I went there. Interesting to see the different historical timelines displayed. Maybe it's just the pacific islander in me but I loved the frangipani trees the most that were planted in and around the fort. Good for a half day visit. 25NT as a discounted ticket for me, a college student.

The old fort is almost completely gone
nping Old Fort was built in 1632 by Dutch, to safeguard the entrance to Tainan seaport. It was originally named as Fort Zeelandia. The fort was taken by Koxinga in 1662, and renamed it as AnPing. The fort was completely abandoned under the ruling Qing Dynasty. The complex we can see today is built after World War 2. The remnant of the original fort built by Dutch- a wall located around 50 meters behind the entrance, and an barricaded old well. The white tower which we can see in the tourism leaflets and websites is standing on the foundation of old fort. It was built after World War 2. There is a souvenir shop and information center beside the tower. There are so many stories to tell on the site, but yet so few have been conserved. Anyway, it is still a must visit site in Tainan.

    Slightly underwhelming
This is the original Dutch fort in Anping. there are similarities with the one in Melaka and of course there were trading links between the two places. there is a small museum that tells the history of the area and has old maps which is very useful as the sea has long receded from the environs of the fort. There is also a shop. you can climb to the top of the modern tower which gives views over the city but it is very flat.

    Part of Anping visit
This place won't exactly wow you. It will be more enjoyable if you consider it as one of the many attractions in an Anping walk rather than a destination by itself. This is what you can get: some views, some historical exhibits and a nice banyan tree.

    Nothing to see
It cost 50twd for the entrance fee. But honestly, there’s really nothing to see. The fort used to be surrounded by the sea, but now you cant even see the sea anymore. The museum is boring, not interactive at all. A suggestion what other countries are doing, they could have convert the place into a theater and have video showtimes to summarize the story behind Koxinga and the fort. Also beware that the peddlers outside the fort can be quite annoying to entice you to their stalls.
