The area

Address
Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

    Slightly Disappointing
There are basically two of three original buildings here. One was destroyed, one is undergoing repairs and covered in scaffolding, leaving just the one main building to visit. There are plenty of stairs up to and inside the building. There are good info boards and photos, but not a huge amounf to see. The views from upstairs aren't great as the place is surrounded by modern developments. More of a historic interest than anything else.

Not a great deal to see
The main attraction of this site is its historical significance as a former Dutch outpost. In truth very little exists of its Dutch origins apart from one long section of castle wall. Much of what is there today was built by the Japanese at the end of the 19th century onwards apart from the building that is now occupied by the Fort Zeelander Museum built by foreign traders in 1882. The museum is not easy to follow with very little natural flow to the exhibits. The observation deck located in the middle of the site is out of keeping with the rest of the architecture. Although it provides views of the surrounding area, these are not especially notable. We had quite high hopes for this attraction but left a little disappointed.

Only recommended in conjunction with a visit to the Anping Tree House
The castle is located in the immediate vicinity of the Anping Tree House, which is well worth a visit. It is not worth driving to the castle just for a visit, as the castle is not interesting enough. However, if you are going to the Anping tree house anyway, a quick look at the castle is ok.

    Unique and well-maintained fort
Great site for some Taiwanese history. See an original Dutch fort, kept in great condition. Walk around and enjoy the sights. Go up in the tower and hopefully see more of the surrounding area. Lots of street food and games for the kids in front of the entrance makes it a lively place.

    Not really impressed
There is not much left of the original fort – foundations and part of the wall. There is a small museum, so it is worth to go with a guide who wll tell the story of the place. Old fort was part of our tour and we had good guide, so it was fine, but I am not sure it is the place I would recommend.

More English Would Be Helpful, But Excellent Museum & Preserved Fort
The old fort was first established by the Dutch East India Company before it fell into ruin and then repurposed by the Japanese colonial period. It's fascinating that the Dutch party of the first still remains. The area where you'll probably spend the most time is the Zeelandia Museum. The video documentary on archeology and history is very informative. The major sections of the Zeelandia museum have English, but not the individual exhibits. The second best area is probably the upper section where the surveillance tower is located. It's worthwhile climbing the 4 storeys to get fantastic panoramic views of Anping.

The fort was mostly reconstructed but still contained a lot of information about the fort, Dutch occupation, their defeat and the subsequent uses by Japan and Taiwan for the property.

The Scouting Deck rose above the fort and had a good view of the Anping area. It was an easy climb. At the top people locked their love wishes to the railings.

The Memorial Hall next to the Scouting Deck contained a gift shop.

The Fort Zeelandia Museum was built next to one of the original Fort walls.

In the back there were a couple of cannons as well as covered excavation area .

Admission was only $50NTD and good for an hour visit.

The grounds of the fort are nice with a museum, excavation site, sitting area with trees and then the fort/tower itself. The walk to the fort is quite a few stairs with no real options up for those who can’t use stairs (to be expected with a ~400 year old structure). Overall it is well kept with a tower at the top that has a great view of Anping (just be prepared for more stairs!). If you’re interested in history I would certainly recommend a visit.

As stated by many reviewers, there isn't much left of the original fort but the little gift shop at the top of the fort was a welcome AC cooled shelter on the melting hot day I went there. Interesting to see the different historical timelines displayed.
Maybe it's just the pacific islander in me but I loved the frangipani trees the most that were planted in and around the fort.
Good for a half day visit. 25NT as a discounted ticket for me, a college student.

nping Old Fort was built in 1632 by Dutch, to safeguard the entrance to Tainan seaport. It was originally named as Fort Zeelandia. The fort was taken by Koxinga in 1662, and renamed it as AnPing. The fort was completely abandoned under the ruling Qing Dynasty. The complex we can see today is built after World War 2.

The remnant of the original fort built by Dutch- a wall located around 50 meters behind the entrance, and an barricaded old well.

The white tower which we can see in the tourism leaflets and websites is standing on the foundation of old fort. It was built after World War 2. There is a souvenir shop and information center beside the tower.

There are so many stories to tell on the site, but yet so few have been conserved. Anyway, it is still a must visit site in Tainan.
