The area
Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history.
The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

Pros:
1. Anping Old Street / Yanping Old Street is a 3 minutes walk from Anping Old Fort so you won't have problems finding it.
2. There are some special street snacks sold here that are worth trying, such as coffin toasts (a thick slice of fried bread containing gravy and ingredients), champion cakes (sweet treat with flavours like sesame or peanut, somewhat similar to Singapore's tutu kueh), and prawn crackers. We settled our lunch in this manner after walking here for about an hour.
3. There are some interesting souvenirs sold here, such as leather goods.
Cons:
1. Tainan can get quite sunny and hot.
2. It gets crowded during the weekends. It is fine on weekdays though.
Tips:
1. Visit this old street before visiting other attractions. While we were here in Dec 2015, some stalls (e.g. the stall selling champion cakes) gave us complimentary tickets granting free admission into nearby attractions like Anping Tree House and Anping Fort. I'm not sure if this will still happen in 2016 but it is worth a try.
2. Some stalls have indoor seating available. Otherwise, approximately halfway through the old street, there is what I think is a tuition centre with steps outside. You can sit here to eat and there is shade as well.

This ancient street has old building filled with fun shops and restaurants. I would definitely recommend this place for visitors to go. This street has many fun shops and foods for people to see and try. I would spend about 1 to 2 hours at this site. And this street is usually packed with people during the weekend.

A very nice ancient street to walk and find local snacks and little knick knacks. A bit like jiufen old Street in Taipei, but it's a shorter street. Some interesting old street games.

You don’t see much of the old street because it’s packed with tourists and vendors. We tried one restaurant that hawked their oyster omelet and it was poorly prepared. There are much better authentic streets if you’re looking for the hustle and bustle of street food.

Had a nice walk here, they are selling pretty interesting stuff that you dont get in Taipei. I bought something that cost more here compared to Kaohsiung/Taipei, so you can consider it's touristy?

We planned a day to go around the anoint old street, we walked with our children, so we took it easy. The shops are not that special. There are a few temples, but small and nice to pass by, but that is it. Some local snacks are avaible around the fort, nice to try. But would not recommend Anping to friends for visiting.

Interesting old street in the heart of Anping. Nice to have a walk here even after sunset. I recommend you to try shrimp crackers and oyster rolls.

This is a lovely street with a nice market to match.
However, the most beautiful thing on the street is a shop called "Owl Depot", which is dedicated to owls. It features two stories with thousands of different owls of all shapes and sizes.
Absolutely wonderful!!!

It is a fun place to hangout where there are a lot of shops that sell traditional food and craft. It's an eye-opening experience and the atmosphere is great.

Like many of the old streets in Taiwan, the Anping Gubao Ancient Street is lined with shops and food vendors and, of course, is packed with crowds.
On your way to the Anping Fort and the neighboring attractions you might as well drop by the Anping Gubao Ancient Street to take a look and grab a bite.
To get to Anping, you could take a bus (#2, #88, and #99) from Tainan Train Station. Or, if you arrive in Tainan by HSR on the weekend, you could take the free shuttle bus #H31 at the designated time. Please note that the bus does not stop at Anping on weekdays.
