Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

The taxi dropped me off in front of this temple since it was the closest point to Anping Fort.

A large gate led towards a courtyard where a number of vendors were setup and selling souvenirs and food off to the side.

The temple itself was quite large and with a lot of intricate carvings and decorations that covered almost every inch of the walls and ceilings. A good first introduction to Tainan’s temples.

The temple is just located in front of the Anping Fort in a touristy site in Tainan. It was constructed in 1668 during the Qing dynasty to house the Matzu deities that were brought over by Koxinga to Anping from the Fukien province.

The temple was meant to be a spiritual pillar to bless those Chinese sailors and settlers in their voyage from the mainland and those who eventually made this part of Tainan as their homes.

The temple enjoys peaceful days until in 1895 when the Japanese killed and burnt the Ching soldiers inside the temple during the Sino-Japanese colonial war. Since then, the temple is believed to be haunted and feared by the residents. It was only in 1966 that the authority decided to rebuild and refurbish the temple. Today, it has become one of the touristy spots in Tainan.

When our guide brought us to the temple, it was crowded with many school students. who were accompanied by their teachers. Anping is rich in history. The long turbulent history of Anping is a history of undaunted and unrelenting struggle against colonialism and imperialism.

The Anping Fort tells of the triumphant defeat led by Koxinga against the Dutch colonialists. This temple cried out the story of the undaunted Qing soldiers who refused to surrender and were burnt to death by the brutal and cruel Japanese imperialists. The Qing Dynasty was weak and vulnerable at that time and China was sliced up by the Western and Japanese imperialists.

The tragic and bloody history of this Anping Kaitai Tianhou Palace should be re-told to all the future generations. And the lesson to learn is always be prepared and upgrade technologically in defense and excel in economy to safeguard peace and prosperity for the nation.

This is a beautiful temple with intricate designs. However you will probably finish seeing this in 10 minutes. This is best combined with the Anping Fort.

This temple is much more and very richly decorated than others in the city. I was in awe of what i was and could not stop looking to the ceiling. I dont suppose this temple alone is worth the trip from downtown but anyone who is in Anping already should not miss this site.

A large site, this temple has some very unique features and is well worth seeing, despite the wealth of wonderful temples in Tainan. The ceilings are truly spectacular. It's just across from the very boring Anping Fort and is surrounded by very narrow lanes and hawkers. Definitely a must see. Also check out the cemetery that is very nearby. Turn right out of the temple's main doors and head about 100m, then cross the road and you'll discover a fascinating burial site right on the roadside. All sorts of really amazing tombs and graves. Just beware that some of the locals may take great exception to you taking photos of the graveyard. No idea why.

This temple is next to Anping Fort. Don't miss the Tianhou Temple if visiting Anping Fort.

This temple is also known as the Grand Mazu Temple to worship the Goddess Mazu or Goddess of the Sea. Inside the temple there are many beautiful ornamental ornaments and statues around it.The statue of the Goddess Mazu is located in the main altar.

Besides visiting, for those who want to pray and burn incense in this temple, available incense is sold in the temple.

We saw dozens of temples in many cities but this one is big, beautiful and busy with activity...in other words, quite engaging and not to be missed.

We visited Tianhou / Anping MatsuTemple as it is the first main temple you see as you exit Anping fort gates. An incredibly intricate and beautiful temple with its origins dating back from 1668 (although last rebuilt in 1994), this the largest temple in the area.
It was very busy with worshippers paying their respects whilst we visited and it is free admission.

This is a very huge and beautiful temple located next to the entrance of Anping Fort. The exterior is very majestic.

A short visit of 15 minutes should be sufficient to appreciate its beauty.

There are many Tianhou Temple in Taiwan, but this one in Anping is on a big scale. The decorations are colorful and photogenic. This temple is located just beside the entrance of Anping Fort. So, you can visit at the same time. The entrance is free.
