The area
Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

    Not just a tree house
Awesome banyan trees enveloping the crumpling stone walls of a house, with steel scaffolding to uphold it, glass facades, and a contrasting modern installation of art with it. Nice to go in, and climb up and down the numerous stairs inside. There is a cozy cafe selling good coffee and ice cream, and a gift shop within the compound. Bought a nice calligraphic cap big enough for my head for only 200 TWD +. Inside gift shop, can try your hands on calligraphy. At the backyard, is a fish pond filled with fishes, and a vending machine to buy a packet of fish food for 10 cents. White birds hanging around the edges of the pond, waiting for you to feed the fishes and they swop in for the kill when the fishes surface for the food. Eager camera man standing by to capture that moment too. Bumped into cute Taiwanese children out on excursions too. Nice for a serene morning or afternoon.

Worth to visit in Tainan city
Anping Treehouse (安平樹屋) It is located in Anping District of Tainan City, a little bit far away from city Tainan city center. The Anping Tree House was once known as the “Haunted House” for many years until it was officially opened to public in 2004 as a project of the National Anping Harbor Historic Park. Can see huge Sprawling roots and branches of banyan trees. Worth to visit.

Fun green space to relax and explore
The tree house is part of the grounds that include the former Tait and co. Merchant House, a building dedicated to a famous calligrapher and a little cafe for tourists. The tree house is very pretty and fun to explore especially for kids with plenty of places to get a fun picture of the overgrown foliage. If you’re 6 foot or over just watch your head there are a lot of doorways with low head clearance. If you like nature this is a great spot.

Located in the first developed area in Tainan and Taiwan. The tree house is quite amazing and covered by huge banyan tree. It is worth for you to take a walk and enjoy the power of nature!

Was very much looking forward to this site, the merchant house was excellent. However the ‘treehouse’ was spoilt by stupid cardboard raspberries and doughnuts with faces blocking the banyan roots and obscuring all photos. Real shame!

This was a unique attraction included with the Tait & Co Merchant House admission.

This tree house was formerly a warehouse that after being abandoned nature sought to reclaim the land. The banyan trees soared above the roofline and the roots and trunks of the tree embedded themselves in and on top of the walls. Each room was a little different and made for an interesting walk. Elevated walkways gave an aerial view of the overall impact but also extended outside the warehouse and led towards the river.

Worth the visit though it won’t take too long to complete the walk.

If you have ever been to Angkor wat in Cambodja this is not worth the visit. It is nice but quite busy and i did not like it. The kids were a bit more excited.

For anyone who has ever read the book "The World without Us" (by Alan Weisman, about what would happen to the natural and built environment if humans suddenly disappeared) this site will strike a chord.

Around 1867 a warehouse was built near Anping Harbour which stored sugar and camphor. In 1911 it was taken over by the Japan Salt Company. Years later, once it was abandoned, a nearby Banyan tree encompassed the building with its roots and branches and now it is a 'tree' house.

We spent nearly an hour here and it's a great spot for photos .It is very close to Fort Zeelandia and a large market selling all manner of yummy food and drinks, and also an easier walk to Anping Old Street (a long alleyway chock full of restaurants and shops and very cool architecture)

Admission is 50NT and that gets you in to the Tree House, the old Tait & Company Merchant House (built in 1867) as well as the home of a famous Chinese Calligrapher, Zhu Jiu-Ying. There are lovely displays of Chinese calligraphy there and even a place you can practice on your own.

There was actually a free English Tour Guide who brought our party of four around all three buildings and he was a fountain of information. A nice surprise!!!!

The site is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. We would have had a bit of trouble getting ourselves there by the bus if our son didn't speak Mandarin.

A must see if you're in Tainan.

Anping tree house is located quite near to the old street and the fort, within walking distance and just cross over the road. You will need to pay entrance fee to enter the place and beside the tree house, there is another house that exhibit some arts. We skippd that and went directly to the tree house, the place is not very big and not so crowded. We took some photos inside and walk around. Before coming out there is a souvenir shop.

I visited the Anping Tree House without knowing anything about it, simply expecting a small, primitive wooden structure up in a tree. Boy, was I surprised when I entered this tree house! This literally is a tree house. The banyan trees have completely reclaimed what was once a large warehouse. It is absolutely ingenious that someone thought to renovate the building and support the trees offering the visitor a most unique experience - walking through the warehouse surrounded by trees, vines and roots is almost like discovering this for the first time - like Indiana Jones. The staircases and bridges built into and above the structure give a most unique view. There is a sky bridge and viewing deck in the rear of the property that span a small pond and offer incredible views of the surrounding wetlands as well as Central Tainan City off in the distance. The adjacent Tait & Co. Merchant House not only is aesthetically pleasing (a combination of Eastern and Western architecture), but also offers an interesting exhibit focusing on the early history of Taiwan.

The tree house is interesting if you did some reading up but if you just visit with no knowledge, you may be disappointed. The place is great for photographers who prefer to take house with lots of roots as like the ones you find in Cambodia. However, it is not that fantastic for one who doesn't appreciate them much. There is a little garden next to it that may be interesting to explore. There is also a museum about the trading by the Dutch next to it that is worth exploring. Since it is near to the Anping Old Street, it is good to view it on the way.

There's a temple in Angkor Wat that's been preserved with its banyan tree overgrowth; here it's the same scenario, with the exception that you can climb up via a very secure metal stairway and look down at the remnants of the British warehouse that was overgrown. There are even places where you can sit (I had some snacks, so relaxed and had a light meal from my aerie), while watching boyfriends taking copious pictures of their girlfriends posing among the branches. If you go to the back of the building there's a paddle-wheel boat on a small inlet and just beyond on the elevated boardwalk you can view the lagoons with their wild life fishing and paddling about. This is also the best location to get a photo of the complete tree engulfing the building. Next door is a museum (included in the entrance price) with exhibits on early Dutch settlers and aboriginals. Children should really enjoy being able to explore and climb around at this site, while parents could take a breather.
