The area

Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

The oldest street in Taiwan has a vibrant day market selling food and souvenirs. I am not certain if this is a delicacy of the region but every few steps we were offered free samples of shrimp crackers.
Far more interesting are the decorative walls in the Anping back streets. One is fanciful as if a street for kindergarten children with emphasis on cat decoration. Apologies for not having lane numbers but if you just wander around you will come across some fun/interesting areas.
Near Taiwan Street is Haishan Hall built shortly after Qing Dynasty took over Taiwan. It was used to house Qing naval officers coming from Haishan District of Fujian Province - thus it's name. It was later purchased as a private residence and in 1975 Tainan city purchased the property giving it a monument status.
My immediate reaction upon entering the courtyard was that it was a bland structure but there is some wonderful stuff to see, Look up at the tile roof and wander on the porch of the main building. I cannot remember where I picked up a brochure that provides history and details of decoration like the Sword Lions that ward off evil.

I enjoyed walking along the old street in Taiwan and Taiwanese are very clever to preserved and made all the old street so vibrant and lively. We went on the first day of 2018 and it is a public holiday, so the place is very crowded and filled with many people. The whole stretch of street with stall and shop vendors selling food, souvenir and beverages. The street is quite long and we bought a few tibits back. There is also Taiwanese opera at the end of the street. Highly recommended to visit the old street to buy some unique local snacks back to your hometown.

I love this street. It is just a 5 min walk besides the fortress. We came at around 5 pm, and it was packed with people. It is like a typical Taiwan night market, with lots of delicious snacks, and friendly vendors! We bought 3 for $500 TWD nougat crackers individually packed by Ah Gong, who is too shy for the camera, unlike the vivacious Peng Hu Ah Ma! Must try the coffin toast bread, where the thick slice of bread is fried, with a deep trench in center filled with thick creamy veg and chicken bites (I think), and covered with a piece of bread aka coffin, hence the name. Taste like a pie. There is a corner Chen Jia at the junction of AnPing Road and GuBao Road can try the oysters rolls and shrimp rolls. Shrimp crackers apparently is the signature snack here, but i find the taste of shrimp quite strong, hence did not buy any (probably because i am used to the Calbee Jap crackers).

Went on a Sunday and it was very crowded. There's lots to eat and buy. Most of the people are super friendly. We cam empty handed and went back filled with snacks to bring back for our family and friends.

If you are in the area of Anping, visiting the fort and temples, anyway, go down the old street and enjoy the markets. It is a decent enough example of a Taiwanese old street.

This is the oldest street in Tainan but now comprises many shops. The shops include souvenirs, leather goods, food, clothes, shoes, etc. It also includes some very expensive modern houses. Keep your eye out for the image of a lion with a sword in his mouth. This is the symbol of the city.

We were a bit disappointed with this street there is not much going on apart from shrimp rice crackers in every shop
We thought that there was more to the street but it’s not great
However we were in the area to do other things so it was nice to be able to stroll down it
It’s there if your near the fort for a look around

Anping Old Street is the oldest street in Taiwan. The estimated age is more than 400 years. Location is not far from Anping Fort. Like in the night market, there are many foods and souvenirs with affordable prices.

The famous and interesting is culinary of Taiwanese food. Shrimp crackers, Bread Coffin, Stinky Tofu Barbeque and Bubble Tea are recommended to be tried.

Coffin bread or guan cai ban is Tainan style snacks which named so because of their coffin-like shape.
