The area
Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

Getting here is not so straightforward; as this is not near the city. You can catch a cab here and back, although taxis are not readily available from there later in the day. Tickets are at 200NT per person, and the ride lasts about 30 minutes. The trip is conducted in mandarin only. The boat launches as soon as there are about 30 passengers in queue. If possible, sit as far front as possible to have the best vantage points for photo-taking. I would recommend this if you would like a change from the city sights. It takes effort to get here, and I would recommend spending the rest of the day at Anping township. You can walk behind the canal cruise and venture into the green alleys midst the fish farms.

With the sun at perfect angle, it became amazingly beautiful
I went there in a sunny early afternoon in December. The forward trip is pretty but not outstanding; but when the boat turned around at the far end, suddenly, the water aligned with the sun and the view became amazingly beautiful. The sunlight shimmered through the tree and became hundreds of dancing twinkles. They then reflected off the wavy water. The twinkles, the low hanging tree branches and leaves, the water, and the reflection, all together, created one incredibly beautiful painting.

    Nothing is special
I visited this place all the way from Kaohsiung with high expectation but this place wasn’t that much impressive as people describe here to me. I waited about 40 mins before i rode a boat and waiting time makes it worse. Personally, what all you can see is pretty much same as the pictures from the internet. If you plan to visit here to see it from other city, i wouldn’t recommend to visit.

A boat ride through a mangrove canal
First it should be noted that you really are going to need your own transportation to get there. You do go over a large bridge to reach the area. The bridge had pretty views and it's fun to watch the fisherman. So scooter here and stop along the way. There are two options for which boat ride you take. Take the cheapest option, unless they serve wine on the other boat it wont be worth it. You get a life jacket and a cute Chinese farmer style hat to wear on the boat, which is great photo-ops. We had the luxury of riding in the front of the boat. It's basically a boat ride up the canal and then back down. It goes through the mangroves, but you wont feel overwhelmed with beauty, and you see the same thing twice. We saw two of the small white birds and a bazillion crabs. However, if take a stroll next to the canal you can see the crabs without taking the boat ride. The seats are tiny plastic stools. They are not comfortable at all. We had fun because we had fun as a group, but those hoping to enjoy it through being impressed will be let down.

You would only need 1 hour here
In summary, its a slow, simple and quaint raft ride down a narrow river/canal with mangrove plants and small crabs at the side. The ride that I took was half hour long, with waiting time another half hour. There is a longer ride available but i didnt opt for it. It isn't that much of a wildlife experience I imagined to be honest.

    Mangrove swamp
The staff at ticket counter was quite rude. We were told just to wait for announcement when the ride is ready. Was not directed into a waiting room to queue. Luckily, we found out while walking around. By then we have missed the first in line queue. We have to wait for 30 mins for a 30 mins boat ride. Some different species of crabs to see but were very tiny. For those who have not seen a mangrove before, this is an eye opener. Not for those who have been to a real mangrove swap It is the ride amongst the low hanging branches of the mangrove that is the list beautiful part of the boat ride.

    Good experience
The boat ride is 30 minutes. The tunnel formed by the mangroves is beautiful. There are many smalls crabs by the banks as well. The water is clear, but according to the guide, the water is usually murky in summer when there is a lot of rain. Recommended to visit in the morning when it is not so hot. The boat will depart once there are 50 passengers to fill it up. There will be a fixed time which the boat will depart if there are less than 50 passengers.

    Waste of time and money
I would not have guven this the one dot rating but had to in order to post review. This is a very very short boat ride, approx 10 minutes. You'll stand in line longer and it's Mandarin only. The mangroves are not that special, the tunnel refers to the trees that overhang which is only a brief part of the brief ride. The bus ride to get there was 1 hour. Not worth the almost $7 US price. Go to the tree house in Tainan instead.

Best boat experience to see a mangrove swamp
You will need to buy a ticket to take a raft ride into a mangrove swamp. The whole ride is 30 minutes. In the swamp, you will see four kinds of mangrove found in Taiwan and wildlife on both sides of the waterway. The water is very clean and clear, as it is only about 1 meter deep. The highlight is a natural tunnel formed by the trees. The scenery and landscape is spectacular. It gives you a great feeling that you are going through the forest of the Amazon river. Do plan to go there in the morning, otherwise it is very hot and the raft is open air.

Nice but quite a short boat ride only. There were one or two short photo-opportunity stretches and that was it really.

We fortunately went there in Dezember and it was during the week. This meant no mosquitos and no need to wait. If you can get a seat in the front of the boat. Otherwise you photograph heads of people instead of trees. Lots of little crabs and birds to see. It's a little oasis in the midst of a busy city.

It was a sunny hot and humid afternoon. There were 2 kinds of boat rides. We took the short duration one because we wanted to experience the green tunnel. Before boarding, we put on the life jacket and a hat. This was already good for photo shots. It seemed that all the participants were Taiwanese except a few of us. The tour guide spoke Mandarin and he was quite humorous who always made the boat people laughed (luckily we know Mandarin). He was also very knowledgeable and highlighted where we could see the birds and their nests, the crabs and the fishes with his lively descriptions. Finally we passed through the green tunnel and saw the ‘Kiss of Angels’, which was the touching of braches of the mangroves and forming a canopy over the waterway. This was very beautiful with reflection of water and sunlight. Fortunately we sat in the front part of the boat and could take lots of photos without any obstruction. The play was fair to the passengers at the back when the boat returned to the pier and went through the tunnel again. A very educational and well organized trip with a very reasonable price, though short duration it was (about 30 minutes). Highly recommended for those who want to see the natural attractions.

Nearby is a small whale museum where there are interesting exhibits. A few steps away is a temple but we did not have time to visit.
