About
At present, the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area has the second stage of the giant wood group plank road, with the Shenyi Bridge as the demarcation point. The first stage plank road starts from the Chitose cypress, and is constructed by the ecological construction method of the elevated wooden plank road and the point-shaped cement base grounding design. The end point is at the Shenmu site. The plank road is 600 meters long, and there are 3 high wooden bridges along the way. You can admire 20 giant red cypress trees with a diameter of 5 to 12.1 meters and tree heights ranging from 25 to 42 meters. After the completion in November 1998, tourists strolling along the way, can't help but Admire the magnificent scenery of "Big tree is beautiful". In August 1998, in order to connect the giant red cypress trees in the area of the tree spirit tower, the Forestry Bureau erected wooden fences in the sacred woods of the fragrant forest and the Chitose cypress, and built a viewing platfo

The best way to do the shenmu trail is to approach it from the Alishan House. Then walk downwards towards the Shenmu Train Station. This way you are walking downwards and can see the old trees from a higher vantage point. Then buy a ticket from the Shenmu station to go back to Alishan Station. Avoid walking up the trail from the Shenmu Station if you have young kids or you are travelling with old folks. It is quite a challenge. Best time to go is after 10am and before 2 pm. Somehow the fog seeps in at around 2-3 pm. And you will see nothing.

The trees in this area are hundreds or even thousands years old. It was quite an amazing scene as I have never seen such big trees before. There are a lot of steps to climb and we did not climb all the way up as we were exhausted. A great place for photography if you are into taking photo of ancient trees.

This is the place to take a rest during the hiking where you could admire the power of Mother Nature while at the same time breathe in quality air.

wondered around among the giant trees for two days with my honey. Not sure its the air or the woods, we were lifted back to the time when we were teens. Go there early before the crowds arrive ( like 10 AM)

I was glad we took this trail because you get to see trees that are hundreds and even thousands of years old. It's amazing to be surrounded by nature that has survived so long. The walkways that wound around the trees made it easy to walk and explore. The air is so fresh and all you hear is the sound of nature broken occasionally when we ran into other hikers.

You can reach this place riding the Alishan Train. This place is filled by giant trees as old as 1000+ years. There are signboard clearly stated age of the older trees.

From the train station, there are proper wooden pathways where you can follow accordingly. These pathways are very well done with non slip materials on every steps. However, the ShenMu station we alighted are walking up hills, and it was an one hour walk uphill to another stations. Given it was already 2-3pm, and its get really misty and low visibility, we decided to turn back.

Otherwise it will be a good hiking trek if you come prepare with proper footwear, snack bars, waters & early morning.

Alishan is such a great place and the forests make it so appealing. This trail or boardwalk is filled with super tall and old Cypress trees. It somewhat reminded me of the Redwood Forest in California. It’s not as impressive but in Asia, it is very impressive. The trails are clean and people are respectful. Do not miss it while in Alishan National Forest.

This reminds me the Redwood Forest and Muir wood in California, smaller scale but easier to walk around. It was an excellent experience to walk in this area and breathed the freshest air while your eyes watched all beautiful nature scenes. This is a must visit spot and must do activity at Alishan.
