Altena Castle is a beautiful structure in an excellent condition: that's because 90% of the castle was rebuild in the early 20th century and therefore is not genuine (which was rather disappointing for me personally). But because the look & feel of the in- and exterior, is that of a true medieval castle, and almost all rooms (including the towers and dungeons) are accessible, it absolutely still is a fun attraction!

In 2014 an elevator and a small, underground exhibition space were added, which are accessible from the main street in the village and make the way up a lot more easy (not for free by the way; an additional admission fee is asked).

This was absolutely amazing! I would recommend this to anyone. We were there on a special day where there were booths set up, live animals, plenty of food and lots of fun. My three year old granddaughter had an amazing time as well as the rest of us. I will cherish the memories made here. The castle is filled with history and is beautiful. The scenery is breathtaking. If I’m lucky, I will be going back some day!

A well set out castle with a clear route to follow around the castle. It was the first Youth Hostel in the world so extra history in the castle. There were a lot of stairs as you would expect in a castle. well presented and preserved. A steep walk up to the castle.

We were recommended to come & see Burg Altena & we were so glad we did. The day was warm & the sun was shining, perfect. We parked at the bottom of the long incline ( although I believe there is a cable car near the railway station) , however we walked up & the scenery was spectacular. The castle itself is very impressive with lots to see & lots of history behind it. They have a lovely restaurant which is not over priced & has magnificent views up & down the valley. Also the staff were really friendly & helpful. It was 6 euros pp which also gets you into the wire museum just a little way down the long incline. This too is worth seeing. All in all a fantastic day out.

Better late that never. Went in August 2016, I had the grand kids visiting during the school holidays from the UK and needed to keep them entertained.

I went at the time that Altena was holding a Middle Ages Festival, mittel alterfest, which takes over virtually the entire town as well as the castle. The festival had everything you need for a good day out, good food, live music, good beer, entertainment and most importantly at the castle a fire breathing dragon, the kids loved it.

The kids had a great day out. Burg Altena (the Castle) is well worth a visit at festival time and to be honest the castle is very impressive (one of the best Ive seen) and must be worth a visit at any time.

I would without question recommend it for a family visit.

Great little castle, well organized exhibits. No guided tour- you wander the passages on your own, like you secretly wanted to do at Marksburg and Eltz.

Well preserved. Good location. Especially interesting for children. Great view from the top. The cobblestones makes you feel as if you are back some centuries.

Very nice historical place, there is something to see inside the castle and amazing view from the mountain, where the castle is located. There is very a good restaurant in it.

Very cool historic castle with new elevator access instead of climbing up the hill. They have installed crowd pleasing electronics for your path to the elevator (kids will love it as did we adults!). Many steps, and we had a private English speaking guide that our German friend arranged for us. Beautiful and definitely worth a trip to see!
