- WorldTravla7Cairns, Australia6,011 contributionsFamily hikeIt was 5 years since I’d been up Ngungun and we came as a family to do the summit (2 x 70 year olds and 2 x 40 year olds). It was a morning over Xmas period (28 Dec) and there were a lot of hikers. Mum and dad did well for 2 fit septuagenarians and we loved the views from the top. My favourite part was the beautiful scent of the forest & eucalyptus after the rain. Mum and dad did the track many years ago and said it was easier now as back then the track was not as graded and they had to do rock scrambling. We had a rain downpour near the end and got moist but it was all part of the experience. Afterwards we stopped off at nearby Glasshouse Mountains shops for coffee & sausage rolls at CJs Pastries.Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten December 30, 2022

- SandmanWenzhou, China51 contributions40 minutes upPopular easy climb with great views at the top. Lots of families and suitable for younger kids but watch them at the summit. It will get your heart rate up but no big deal for average fitness level. Be watchful at the top there are big drops in some areas. Allow say 40 minutes up if you keep moving at a steady pace .Visited July 2020Written July 19, 2020

While the views are really spectacular once you get to the top, be aware that this is challenging for anyone with mobility issues. I went with my daughter who is an avid hiker/mountain climber and she underestimated how difficult this would be for me.
It took us almost 1 1/2 hrs as I have difficulty with stairs and didn't realize there were so many. That being said just over 2 years ago I was using a walker most of the time so I guess if I can do it, most seniors can. Make sure you wear proper foot wear as well.
I really liked the huge Bat Cave on the way up. You should know that it is only about 1/2 way up so that's a good gage to decide if you are able to make it to the top.
Anyone with a moderate level of fitness should be able to do this fine, as for me...well I would have never made it without my hiking poles,...I feel like I conquered Mt Everest!

We set off from our accommodation in the Glass House Mountains. It was a nice pleasant walk to the foot of the mountain. Useful map situated at the foot of the mountain explaining the area and what you might see. If you need to fill up your water bottle there is also a water station. A very pleasant walk and the gradient not too steep. I would suggest that as you approach the summit you keep a watchful eye on children as the roadway does narrow with steep Falls. Wonderful views at the top.

If you won't climb the difficult mountains, then make sure to go up Ngungan because it offers spectacular views of all the others! I walked from the station to the trailhead in 30 minutes then it was a brisk 20 minute walk to the top up a lot of stairs. It only gets a bit difficult near the top but go as high as you can because it's magical right at the top, except for the lack of shade.

Us and the teens loved this walk. Nice forest, great view. Not too hard or long. Took just under an hour with a bit of time at the summit.

Great super easy walk with super views. This is a good central option to easily see some of the best of Glasshouse Mountains without needing to do any rock scrambling.

Whilst it might make you huff & puff, it is worth every step. The trail is well maintained, albeit lots of steps, the views are superb. When they say to watch the kids at the top - they mean it - and for those taking selfies on the edges, at the top - maybe ask yourself if the 6 second tour to the bottom is worth it?? Fabulous!

What’s the best time of the day to climb? Taking my 14 and 5 year old.

At this time of the year with moderate weather anytime during daylight hours would be fine - Trip takes around 2hrs return considering that the young ones like a walk I would leavers do the return walk before 2pm.

Would it be reasonable/safe to leave half hour before sunrise to be at summit around sunrise?

Hi Michael D.
You would need longer than 30 minutes. You will need to know your fitness level and at least allow over an 1.5 hours.
Also consider navigating in the dark will slow you down.
The track is clearly visible (in the day) BUT not clearly marked or sign posted. You would need excellent lights and focus.
SAFE! the track is safe to the rocks near the top, there is approximately 300m to the summit on a ridge which you will need to carefully negotiate- some rocks a smooth and narrow with steep drops.
I would not advise to attempt a climb if it has rained or if it rains on the day as the dirt track will be slippery and the rocks at the summit dangerously slippery.
I hope this will help. Please take your time and take care.
Regards, Alex (cagatravel)
