Our naturalist guide was explaining this place to us in such a positive manner I'm left to think maybe they truly think they are doing good by these elephants and their community.

The first stable we saw contained a mother repeatedly trying to walk towards her baby who was visiting the next stable, over and over and over again she tried to walk forward to have her back leg pulled back while nodding her head up and down, cue the tears. Babys aren't shackled because they stick close to their moms, naughty elephants have both front feet shackled - its repulsive and the docile ones have one back leg shackled and are attached to maybe a 5' chain.
The final stable contained a younger "naughty" elephant who had both front legs shackled and had to do a weird hop to move around the stake he was tied to, he kept shoving his trunk down his throat and was drooling like crazy while shaking his head back and forth, when we asked about him the guide said he was playing. It was at this point I noticed most of our group had tears in their eyes.

I don't know if it is malice or they do believe this is the best treatment plan for these animals but they need education and support from animal right's groups if these elephants are to be treated humanely

We went here as part of a tour, and after a fantastic early morning canoe ride. The elephants are chained, you can see young elephants being ‘trained’ with chains and metal rods, many elephants were rocking in their feet. I love the people of Nepal who are some of the kindest iv ever met, but the elephants need much better conditions and should be able to roam free. We chose not to do the elephant safari (ride on the back of the elephant) and went by jeep instead. I read conflicting reviews on how the elephants are treated - I have witnessed the park, I have seen elephant handlers on the tour with metal hooks which are supposedly illegal. I appreciate that elephants are a tourist draw to a poor area, and a possible threat to villages, but we also saw working elephants collecting grasses and they seemed better treated. Please think carefully before going - lovely to see elephants (and you won’t see any wild ones) but heartbreaking to see them tied up and not free to roam.

I went because I like elephants, but people who like elephants should avoid. Reading the information in the museum about how young elephants are trained with fire and hooks that pierce their ears, followed by seeing them all chained up (including one small elephant struggling to move chained against a post) is depressing for anyone who cares about animals.

If you want to see elephants displaying clear signs of depression, boredom and “cage fever” then look no further than this breeding centre. This is not a conservation programme - the elephants are kept to breed replacements for those used to work in the national park.

The only positive things I can say is that part of the elephants’ work is patrolling the park and poaching has been almost eliminated by the efforts of the park rangers. And at least the exhibition at the entrance to the centre is brutally honest about what is done to the elephants in order to train them. The display boards make for really grim reading if you bother to read them all.

Majority of elephants are on very short chains, swaying their heads in stress. Other elephants I saw being hit. Not a nice place for the animals.

With so much space for these magnificent elephants we will never understand the chains.
We were told this is to stop them from wandering off. With so much money coming in from visitors why not build a large enclosure where they can wander.

Better still LET THEM BE FREE

I think you have to put this place into context to a degree. The intention is genuine in that they are seeking to increase the population of elephants in the park but I do wander if this is the right way to do it. Chaining intelligent beasts to a stake to restrict their movement is surely not right and they should have much more freedom. I do honestly believe they are looked after, fed and watered regularly but some are clearly stressed. This is not done well and left me very uneasy. I think you can give this a miss.

Should have read reviews before going and we're sad to see all the elephants in chains.
We read the training information boards and we were shocked to learn about the very harsh training conditions. Wouldn't go again. Originally thought I was a sanctuary not a training centre

I understand it is a breeding centre but not happy to see these beautiful creatures chained. Maybe there is no other way, and they may be a threat to farmers, but still, pulls at the heart strings.

Here you can see some elephants who having a baby or getting ready for doing later the elephant-safari. All elephants are chained up und you have to ask if this is really a good life for the elephants. Right now they have a very young elephant, who is just born early in october 2018, so that’s maybe a reason to visit, otherwise you have seen for sure already elephants otherwise.
