We were the first guests after New Jersey reopened and Walnford village was uncharacteristically empty. The interiors of the buildings were closed but there was so much to see!
We entered through the Corn Crib entrance. First we visited the museum, across from Carriage House, which has walls on three sides only so remained open to the public. It showcases the 200-year history of the estate and Waln family. We walked around the grounds with great interest reading the information provided and exploring. 18th century Waln House draws attention as does Working Grist. We were impressed with some of the innovations the owners adopted like Rinson Turbine.
I highly recommend this great, interesting day-trip destination.

A beautiful day to explore! So much fun during a rainy day, especially now when you want to spend a lot of time outside, away from people. Love that it is free and has a lot of interesting things to learn about. We traveled an hour to get here for a fun day drip and it did not disappoint!

We visited Historic Walnford on a Sunday in September. You can walk through the gristmill, Waln family home which has been restored to its appearance during the Colonial Revival period and other farm buildings. There are not formal tours of the buildings, but there are many interpretive signs throughout the buildings and grounds. There were also park staff available to answer questions. One of the staff operated the mill so that we could see how it produced corn meal. The park was holding a cornbread "bake off" and corny joke contest on the day we visited. We enjoyed sampling the cornbread and casting our votes for the ones we liked best.
We have visited many historic areas, such as this one, throughout the country. This ranks with the best and there is no charge to visit it! I highly recommend Historic Walnford to anyone who is visiting Monmouth County, NJ.

This gem is also on The New Jersey Women's Heritage Trail. Go to experience the historic house, grist mill, carriage house, and outbuildings or just go to walk around and enjoy the grounds.

Oh, so beautiful and relaxing. The mansion is fabulous. The ranger was very informative and helpful, and her narrative placed me back in time. The grounds are gorgeous. Monmouth County Parks should be very proud.

This is a nice quiet, off the beaten path spot in NJ. You'll see interesting historical artifacts and a picturesque mill. It is never croded and the parks employees are quite knowledgeable.

We have visited Historic Walnford many times. We have been there in the winter, spring and autumn. Each season brings a different charm to the place.

Sarah, the Park Ranger, is wonderful and she has come up with many interesting programs to highlight different occasions in the life of the Walnford's so that you really get a sense of what it was like to actually live in the home.

They also have a Facebook page so that you can keep track of the events that are planned.

I often think this is Monmouth County's forgotten park & that's a shame. The restoration work they've done is wonderful. Walk through the beautiful house & take the time to read the history of the property & the area. The grounds are lovely & make a great picnic spot (tables plentiful). All of the employees were warm & welcoming & very knowledgeable. Tip: find the ring on the bedroom floor & ask about it.....

My wife and I decided to take a ride from our house in Somerset County NJ and check out Historic Walnford in Monmouth County NJ. I must say, we were plesently surprised. We were the only ones there at the time so we started looking through the open buildings which included a grist mill, smoke house, information/bathroom barn and a main house. We started walking up to the main house when the park ranger opened the door and gave us a full tour. The house is meticulously kept and is extremely interesting especially since the house was in the family for a very long time. The park ranger knows all about the house and gave us a wonderful personal tour. It is a beautiful house full of history and is meticulously kept. The grounds are beautiful and we enjoyed walking between the buildings even thought it was 25 degrees out. You can also walk around the inside of the 3 story grist mill which is really interesting. There are heated restrooms on the property and there is also a nice winery nearby. We will definitely be going back when it gets warmer. Check it out, it's really a hidden gem.
