This activity was a favorite while in northern Puerto Rico for 12 days. I was skeptical when people kept saying "While in Puerto Rico, you have to do this!" - but they were right. It's really worth it when your group of kayaks emerge from the channel that winds through the mangrove trees and you begin to see that every stroke of your paddle makes the water glow in the darkness. The Kayaking Puerto Rico company is organized and efficient; the equipment is all in good order (kayaks, life vests, paddles, lights, etc); you are part of a group; you learn some educational facts about these waters; and the Kayak Puerto Rico crew (our crew had 3 people kayaking along with us the entire way) carefully monitors the group. Our group was made up of 12 2-person kayaks, with participants who varied a lot in both age, and in experience level. But every kayak made it through the mangrove channel to the quiet lagoon where the bioluminescence was brightest. I would recommend this experience to most anyone, unless you are utterly unfit for kayaking. Our party included two people in their late 60's, and two people in their late 20's, and even the "elders" did fine on the trip. The kayaks used are the "easy entry" design, so even if your joints are a bit stiff you should be able to enter and exit these kayaks easily.

This was truly an experience I’ll never forget. Our guides (Miguel, Paola, and Kenny) were really great, and they made the experience fun and enjoyable- even for the folks who hadn’t kayaked before. I loved that they took pictures of us that we could share with our friends and family afterwards, and I really enjoyed learning about why the lagoon is bioluminescent before we even left the shore.

The lagoon was spectacular, and I definitely recommend the 8:15 tour as the sun is still setting for the earlier tours. Any amount of light makes the glowing harder to see, so even though kayaking through the mangroves in pitch black was a challenge, it was worth it. We were welcomed back with snacks, and the whole experience was one I will recommend to anyone traveling to Puerto Rico.

Huge thanks to Kayaking Puerto Rico for making this experience such an incredible one.

This was my second time visiting the Laguna Grande Bio-bay. The first time I went, I went with a different outfitter and was not happy with their customer service. I have a totally different experience with Kayaking Puerto Rico! The staff (shout out to Kenny, Miguel, and Paola!) were kind, knowledgeable, and fun to be around. They made sure we had a safe and enjoyable evening. I would 100% use Kayaking Puerto Rico again and will recommend them to anyone else I know who wants to visit the bio bay.

Kayaking Puerto Rico also departs from a different location than most of the bio-bay kayaking trips. Their unique departure point eliminates the paddle across the open bay which would be very helpful to less experienced kayakers or families with younger children. Even my group of experienced kayakers was happy to not have to paddle across the bay after paddleing through the mangroves.

Kayaking Puerto Rico put together a wonderful kayaking tour of Bio Bay! They were very well organized and efficient. There were at least four guide kayaks in the water with the group at all times (our group consisted of maybe 15 two-person kayaks), so we felt very safe. The nighttime kayaking trip through the mangroves was almost as neat as the bay itself. Having read reviews of the bay, I came in with low expectations for the bioluminescence, and of course it wasn't like the pictures you see of the Maldives, but it was really cool! Like fireflies or glitter in the water where you swirl your hand. My wife and I had a great time and would definitely recommend Kayaking Puerto Rico.

KPR distinguished itself from a crowded field of tour providers with its professional, timely, and informative execution. The guides were both engaging and situationally aware, able to accommodate the very wide range of skill sets on the trip. I highly recommend their services to any tourists seeking to appreciate the lagoon to the fullest.

Don’t expect to see the glow as you paddle through the bioluminescent bay. Instead, expect to be instructed to put a wet tarp over your head to not let any light in. Then, splash water into your kayak, in order to see small flashes of blue light from the algae. The tour is not an 1 hr and 45 minutes. It’s more like 30 minutes. That little video they show you, of the guy standing up in the kayak ,and rocking it from side to side while the bay appears to light up with blue light is bs. Don’t waste your money on car service or waste rental time/gas. You literally can go kayaking in Old San Juan for $20-25 bucks.

Entire group....from teenagers to more "senior" adults enjoyed this adventure. The crew and support team were very professional and took safety very seriously. The entire kayak journey through the mangrove forest and into the totally protected bay to see the biolumescant plankton was amazing!

We greatly enjoyed the opportunity to snorkel off Culebra Island and explore Flamenco beach and recommend it as a day well spent. The warm and crystal clear waters off Culebra were perfect for snorkeling. It appears sea life greatly enjoy these waters as well as we saw turtles along with rays, urchins, anemones, corals and a variety of fish.

Our guides for the adventure Sophia, Estefania and Elliot were great. They provided instruction on everything from properly adjusting life vests to entering and paddling our kayaks. They snorkeled with us to make sure we didn't miss any of the exciting sea life swimming all around us. They also assisted whenever anyone needed a little extra help with their kayaking skills or getting back in the kayak (wasn’t me!). Since there's a wide range of ages and abilities, this kept the adventure running smoothly and on time. The entire adventure consisted of much more snorkeling time than kayaking which is exactly what we wanted. The kayaks were just used to get us out to the reef for snorkeling.

After snorkeling, we headed to beautiful Flamenco Beach for about 1.5 hrs to explore on our own. Be sure to bring some $ for lunch as you will be hungry by then.

Kayaking PR also made it easy to get to Culebra Island by ferry which is a bit more complicated than you'd expect. We saw several people turned away from boarding the ferry or purchasing tickets for various reasons so having this taken care of was extremely helpful. Other ferry considerations are that parking is approx. $10, it’s about an hour each way, the trip out for us was rough but the ride back much smoother.

Also we greatly appreciated the locked area to protect our belongings while snorkeling and the pictures that were sent the next day.

Thanks Sophia, Estefania and Elliot for a wonderful day!

Problems from the start. When I spoke to a young woman on the phone I was not told anything of how to dress or what to expect and were blind-sided when we arrived... we were the only ones not wearing bathing suits. The 2 person Kayak me and my girlfriend used had my end of it taking water from the get-go. I weigh 235Lbs and she weighs 120Lbs.
Then the "fun" begins so get your paddle ready because it will be an hour each way in complete darkness along a winding trail. The trip back was against a strong current and so if you are a couch potato like me, make sure to butch up and hit he gym before you do this. The indirect path caused many on the tour to get stuck and need help help being put back on the right path including ours.
When we arrived to the site to see the water "light up" with activity it was a sad experience that was blamed on the city lights and clouds. The staff instructed us to put tarps over our heads and kayak to shield us from the light but the effect was only akin to seeing bubbles when you quickly pass your hand by the side of the boat. We then were given a 10 minute lecture on the habitat and then back to paddling for another hour.
I know they do not want to disturb the habitat and that's why I was paddling for 2 hours, but for the money I would pass on this one.
Experience 2 stars, helpful and knowledgeable staff 5 stars.

Hi Carrick, Thank you for sharing your experience. We appreciate your time and support during this trying times! It seams we were not able to contact you after the tour to get your feedback personally. After reading your review, I can understand your frustration and I'm sorry to hear the experience was less than expected. However, I'm glad that you felt our staff was well prepared. As well as they are also accesible to assist you along the way! That been said, I can assure you that your experience is our priority! We would never try to mislead you. We try our best to provide as much details as possible over the phone. However, in case we were to miss any important details, you can find everything you need to know from your trip with us on our confirmation email. In regards to your concern about the visibility of the glow, our lagoon is the only one in world that glows year round. Of course there are some natural factors that can affect the intensity and those can change from one day to the other without any warning. Among those factors we can find, light pollution, temperature of the water, the presence of seagrass, even the phases of the moon, etc. Please note that nature can be unpredictable and prone to sudden changes. On days were the glow is less visible, the use of the tarp can really make a difference! Thank you for understanding that as a company we strive to preserve the ecosystem for future generations, and we also appreciate your feedback to help us improve our services. We hope you can give us another chance in the future! Cordially, Alexandra

This was a real adventure for our party (3 adults and one 9 year old). The whole team at Kayaking PR were so fun but professional at the same time. Take the bioluminescence out of the equation and it was still so cool to kayak up the lagoon to the lake in the dark. 10/10 would recommend this to anyone who wants some excitement and adventure. If you are a bit scared of the dark this might not be for you. Our 9 year old daughter was quite nervous but they made her feel safe about the trip. She was a bit scared along the way so those under 10 might have second thoughts but afterwards she said she loved it.
