fun trip and an easy workout
Aug 2020
We took the railbike to the Abbaye de Maredsous. The way to Maredsous is mostly uphill, but it is not at all steep, so if you are fit it is no problem. The staff at departure ana arrival were very friendly and the carriages were in good order. Simple but fool proof. The trip to Maredsous took us about 25 minutes. We decided to walk back because we would have had to wait for an hour before we could take the railbike back. This is because there is only one track, so they cannot have traffic in both directions. A head on collision would be awkward, even at low speed. A fun trip for families and couples alike.

Excellent activity

Fun family activity. Great way to spend a few hours and to travel in a natural surrounding. Bring some snacks and drinks with you because the restaurant at the halfway point where you stop is pricey.

Lots of fun with our family!

We really enjoyed this activity today - children 7yrs, 9yrs and 10yrs. Made a booking over the phone, very friendly host on arrival. It was raining lightly at first but it didnt matter. The trip was beautiful pedalling along the treeline, as the leaves were all changing colour for autumn. Before returning we walked to the Abby for lunch - it was a pretty walk (just 15min each way). Then pedalled back. We highly recommend as a fun outdoor experience.

We had a fab experience not at all like the poor reviews
Aug 2019 • Family
Read the reviews before we went and was a little concerned but the kids were so excited we went anyway. You need to pick a time slot to turn up to as the tracks are one way so they need everyone going in the same direction.

I didn’t have any of the experiences those giving poor reviews did. We went to the wrong part of the route initially and a lovely man told us where we needed to be and managed to work out my ropey French and spoke English. Phew!
The lady at the start was super friendly and chatty and also English speaking.
The man who set us up was lovely. Between my French and his epic miming to aid our communication we were off. (I’m not sure if he spoke English or was being super respectful of my effort to speak a bit of French).

The track was lovely. Really pleasant and you can get up quite a speed if you have nobody in front of you. The track is one way hence the times of the departure.

You stop off when you get to Falaen as the track breaks there and have refreshments and a loo stop and then either head back or, if you paid more for the longer route, you continue.

There are drinks, ice creams and chips from the hut with some tables and two close by cafe/pubs. We just had an ice cream. There weren’t as many seats as there were people.

I expected the toilets to be unpleasant but they were fine, you need a 50 cent piece for the door to release so make sure you have one. One door gets to men and womens loos.

We only paid to go to Falaen and, whilst we wished we had gone further as it’s nowhere near as taxing as expected and, due to the ages of my kids (12 & 13) we could share the peddling as the seats are adjustable, my son hurt himself and earned some fabulous grazes and bruises so we were happy to go back after the break.

After a teeny bit of peddling to get some speed up at the start, peddling was pretty much not required. You just coast back down the hill. I didn’t think the climb was visible on the way at all although another review suggests a 3% gradient.

All in all, for €18 for the four of us we had a brilliant time, would do it again (but the longer journey) and would highly recommend.

Horrible staff

After I have carefully read their website, I still had some questions. Our group varies from very young children (1 yr) to elderly (70+). Thus, timing is crucial to ensure little to no disruption to e.g. lunch time.

So I just called the nr 003282699079 as per their website (29/07/2019 around 12:15 PM). Got a man (sounded older) on the line who was clearly not happy and not willing to help. We spoke in Dutch. He was unpleasant, rude, in fact just an #%%sshole (apologies for my language, but it was appalling!).

If he does not want to speak to people because as he claimed "everything is on the internet", then why putting a phone number on your website?
Clearly not everything is on the internet, if we still have questions! (Questions were re' restaurants availability along or near the track, parking availability at departure points, and what interesting scenery there is on each track).

And even though if everything was on the internet, what's the harm of just helping people with their questions, what's the harm of just being kind? It doesn't cost him anything. We know of Belgians who are very friendly and keep customers service high. But this guy is the complete opposite. Customers mean nothing to him!

We are so appalled by his bad attitude on the phone. We can imagine how horrible he must be in real. We've decided therefore to no longer do the railbike journey with our group. One positive thing of this phone call is that we're relieved not to spend our money on a company that's unpleasant towards customers!

Took the rail bikes only half way from Warnant to Falaën. Next time I'd go all the way to Maredsous. It seemed like a bit of work for the outward journey but there is a slight incline of 3%. On the way back you almost don't need to peddle. Plus the cafés in Falaën are a bit grim and Maredsous is well worth a visit.

The bikes are kind of basic and the whole operation could do with an upgrade; my standard gripe for a lot of (Southern) Belgium.

Excellent experience! I warmly recommend it to everyone of you! I was here with several friends. That's the best option. Children might find it hard.

We had a nice trip pedalling on the railway along the picturesque valley from Warnant to Maredsous (14km return). First we did 4 km from Warnant to Falaën, changed railcars and did another 3 km to the old station of Maredsous. We walked to the abbey and had a break there before the 7 km to go back toward the departure point in Warnant. Staff at all points were helpful and making the rides go without any trouble. The ride is easy and we were worried it might be too long, but it wasn't for us. We had rain most part of our trip, but still a good experience. Several restaurants along the stops where you can have a small pit-stop to refresh and refuel if needed.

I expected more
Jun 2019 • Family
This was my first railbike, we took the 8km journey, and I was hoping to see a nice scenery, but got a bit disappointed, not much to see, perhaps we should have taken the longer journey...
18 EUR is perhaps just a bit too expensive...
But I enjoyed the concept!

We spent a lovely afternoon on the Railbikes. The landscape is beautiful and the pedaling never too heavy, good fun for old and young. Highly recommended.
